GOG News and Updates 2013

At first I was tempted to get the games but I already own most of them, but for $5 for the entire bundle? Sounds pretty good to me~

Are Wizardry 6, 7, and 8 still enjoyable today? And if I buy them would I be forcing myself to play through the first two to transfer my progress to 8? Is it worth it? Thanks! Surprised I've never played anything in the franchise.
8 is absolutely very enjoyable, much thanks to the superb interface. The storyline and missions can be a bit of a chore to follow and solve, but it's a small part of what makes the game great (exploration and combat).

As much as I loved playing 8 a couple of years ago, I found 6&7 to be much harder to get into.

Now up to six releases (seven I guess if you count the 2 in 1) in one day, might be a new record.

The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief, from the creators of the well-received adventure game The Book of Unwritten Tales, also just released on GOG.com today.

Will be interesting to see if GOG adds linux (SteamOS) support to their catalogue down the road, or how easy the community gets the games running under it.

Today's release is a little unusual; it's five indie titles - new to GoG, but they've been around a while - with a stacking bundle discount straight away. $1.99 each, or $0.99 each if you were to purchase all five.

The titles:

VVVVVV
The Adventures of Shuggy
Gateways
Ben There, Dan That! + Time, Gentlemen Please!
Escape Goat

It appears that they're going to be $5.99 each when the bundle deal is over.

Yessssssss. Been waiting for these two to hit GOG for ages. Played the original freebie game and it was brilliant.

They're already using some parts of scummvm right? That has native linux support already. They'd just have to add a word to the store page, and maybe another search keyword.

Strictly speaking, that probably ought to be based on OS/2 Warp.

It is a great deal. At this price discount for the full five, it doesn't make much sense to try to drop a title or two. I hope we get more Indie release bundles like this one.

Nice bundle there by GOG.

Saw that Blood Omen 2 and Anachronox are showing up on Steam in the other thread. It makes me worry a little about GOG. Without exclusivity for classics, it's going to be harder for them to draw people to their site.

GOG will still have extras. Edit: Another reason to get these old games on GOG is the Steam versions don't get the latest patches. The Steam versions of Thief 1&2 didn't get the NewDark patches.

I think the way things work is that GOG does all the heavy lifting to get these old games working on modern OS's, but GOG only gets a few months exclusivity in exchange. Kind of weird though that those two SE titles were GOG exclusives for so long.

Definitely somewhat worrying if Steam errodes the advantage that GOG has... I still overwhelmingly prefer buying games on GOG just because they're DRM-free, but yeah.

Anyway, VVVVVV got added today, and that makes me happy, because I absolutely love that game. Don't really know anything about the other 4 indie games released today.

Edit: From the trailer, Escape Goat looks incredible.

Well, I think GoG still have a reputation to be more accessible. An interesting series of tweets from earlier today:

‏Dave Gilbert @WadjetEyeGames

So I decided it was time to submit the Shivah to Steam. I really hope they don't make me go to Greenlight again.

Stuart Moore @Sslaxx

@WadjetEyeGames Don't forget @GOGcom - suspect you'll have more luck with them, too.

@Sslaxx @GOGcom Oh yeah, they already know about it. :-D

GOGcom ‏@GOGcom 40m

@wadjeteyegames @Sslaxx That's true! :-)

(For those who aren't aware: The Shivah is an earlier game by Dave Gilbert, the guy behind the Blackwell titles)

That's true. I had lunch with a few indie devs from St. Louis who primarily work in the mobile space, but they said that if they put something out for PC, they're going to GOG first thing, just because they're so much easier to work with. It's interesting that they've managed to build that kind of reputation over the years, considering their shtick was basically just old games.

The Ben and Dan games are legit amazing, GAF. I wish Size Five Games would make more adventure games rather than all of the actiony stuff they've been doing.

What's good about them? I'm not a big fan of the art style, but if there's something particularly novel about those games, I'll check 'em out.

They're actually funny. Almost no one gets videogame comedy right but the Ben and Dan games approach Lucasarts territory. ..only with more toilet humor.

Best part: Practically every item combination in the game results in unique dialogue. Especially in the sequel.

I own two of the five super 5 games from indie bundles (VVVVV, Ben There...). I might end up biting on the bundle just to support GOG.

Got it. Rogue Legacy may not be my kinda game when it comes to mid/late game content (I derive no joy from the "bullet hell"* stuff) but it's great fun for a good while even without that.

(I had ample problems fighting the first boss at level 50. Don't mind me, I suck)

MORE releases. Is this the most release-filled week ever?

Memoria: $17.99.

The Inner World: $11.24

Also, and perhaps most exciting: We knew American Revolt was on the way, but it's actually a *lot* of Bullfrog addon updates:

Syndicate gains American Revolt
Dungeon Keeper gains Deeper Dungeons
Magic Carpet gains Hidden Worlds
Populous gains Promised Lands
Populous: The Beginning gains Undiscovered Worlds

wow. This is pretty huge. I had put off playing Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper and Magic Carpet until they had their add-ons, and now they are the full Plus or Gold editions! Time to Persuadertron a crowd of innocent bystanders, pick up some guns off of dead bodies, and pile everyone into a single vehicle to cruise for some classic urban good times.

I never played Dungeon Keeper back when it was released. Does it still hold up? I was considering picking up the pack with both DK 1 + 2, just want to see if it's worth the time and (admittedly small amount) money.

Ooh, Magic Carpet update? Shame it won't fix the inverted Y-axis or the gamelogic timing issues

The timing thing would require significant code rewrite, I think. The sequel doesn't suffer from it!

The second game is still worth your time. The first is good too but the sequel just made everything better.

So I'd heard! I'd bought it, but haven't tried it yet.

The inverted Y-axis annoys me more, though. Kind of wish this game was open-source, it's crying for a source port.

Graphically not that much. Its a pixellated mess. However it still looks charming and funny. And the sound design is amazing. As far as gameplay goes, this is my favorite PC game of all time. I play the whole thing (and its expansion) every 1 or 2 years ever since i played it in 1997. Every time i start it from the beginning i still feel excited about playing through the whole thing again. Its that addictive. For me its better than the sequel. The sequel feels somewhat slow in comparison and less funny. And the sound design/music isn't as memorable. Also, i'm not a big fan of low-poly 3D graphics of early 3D strategy games.

Yeah, I'm not going to go in expecting some glorious HD masterpiece in the visual department. The gameplay sounded like something I would enjoy playing. I'll probably pick the bundle up and give them a shot.

Night Dive Studios just updated their website.

GOG is teasing something for the middle of october for their 5th birthday celebrations. "Grand finale" was mentioned.

Night Dives facebook has a recent comment about lucas arts

Honestly, I'd be surprised if the thing in October isn't the addition of Lucasarts. They've been hinting at it for a while, and why would they put a question like this in today's quiz:

12. What is the most wishlisted game currently NOT in GOG.com's catalog?
a) Star Wars: X-Wing
b) Grim Fandango
c) Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

There's really no reason to prod at that unless they've got something up their sleeves.

Night Dive went to Double Fine to get Grim Fandango autographed and mentioned the game specifically earlier on in the summer.
