Yes, that's how it is here in Sweden, and it would surprise me greatly if it was any different in Denmark. Thankfully, it's pretty damn easy to flash Google's own official Nexus ROM onto the phone, and once you've done that you'll get updates directly from them instead of having to wait for Samsung to get their shit together. I did that earlier today, in fact, and it went perfectly using a nice guide.

I really have no idea why Samsung even need to be involved. The official excuse I believe is that there are some modifications they need to perform on the software for our markets, but I have no idea what that would be. Google's ROM has all the same languages and stuff that the Samsung one does (including the same lack of Nordic dictionaries for the default keyboard), so what modifications are Samsung doing that are taking them so long? Nobody knows.
Mind linking to the guide you used? I've come to accept I'll never get the 4.0.4 update otherwise :(

Doesn't defeat that the purpose of a Nexus device? Not having to wait and flash ROMs and whatnot?

Sure! I used this one. It's really easy, just follow the steps.

The only thing that can be a bit tricky is getting the fastboot drivers (linked from the guide) correctly installed on your PC, but once you've managed that it's a very simple process. I found these instructions useful for getting the drivers correctly installed. You need to click "Show" under "2. ADB/FB Driver Naked Samsung Driver 1.7" (older version of the drivers you'll be using, the instructions work fine).

Yeah, and that's what makes the whole thing so annoying. Sure, you still get a pure Android experience, but you shouldn't have to wait so damn long for updates when you've got a Nexus. Hell, the Galaxy Note is ahead of the Samsung-updated Nexus now (4.0.3 vs 4.0.2), how sad is that? Samsung (and Google, since they for some reason decided to let Samsung handle this) have really done a terrible job with this.

You totally should. Don't listen to that s3 is best galaxy BS. While yes the s3 has good specs its not WTFOMG better then the nexus. The s3 is also stuck in Samsung update hell, you'll be lucky to see 4.1 in the next six months.

How is the S3 in update hell if it comes with the latest version out of the box?

And having 4.1 doesn't make your phone the best out there either.

it remains to be seen if having device equality (for the most part) on the american S3s will cause them to get updates around the same time as the international version, otherwise you'll be waiting extra months for official updates (on top of the 3-4 months it takes for the international version to get updated) unless you're fine with ports that have missing functionality.

Wondering what Google’s flagship I/O Conference announcement this week should look like? Wonder no longer. It’s a 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet running Android Jelly Bean, and it’s set to hit Australia from July.

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • 7-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280x800 and a 178-degree viewing angle
  • 1.3Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor
  • nVidia GeForce 12-core GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB or 16GB of internal storage
  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera, no rear camera
  • NFC with Google Wallet
  • Android Beam
  • Battery life estimated at 9 hours

$199 - 8GB
$249 - 16GB

That's cool with me. I'm not interested in tablets at all, and another "Nextgen" Nexus phone would only make me more insecure about getting a Nexus soon. I won.

edit: Yeah, the price is really appealing, I just wouldn'T know what to do with it at all :/

Damn, a tablet that cheap (but still seemingly pretty powerful) running vanilla Android 4.1 might be just what it takes to make me get one.

Damn. 200€ for that... I've been looking at tablets but all Tegra 3 devices are very expensive. This is perfect. Except the 16gb storage. I hope there's a micro-SD slot too.

More likely to be about €249 for the 16 GB one (and €199 for the 8 GB one), isn't it? That's usually how stuff like this (stupidly) works.

Google are bringing a game-changer if true. Let's face it - the Kindle Fire isn't a tablet as much as it is an Amazon content consumption device.

They are. But are they not also completely gonna piss off all the other Android OEMs? This thing will kill the sales of every other Android tablet in existence.

I suspect that's why they're not launching a 10" model. There's also probably some truth in the saying "a rising tide lifts all boats" here, as Android is getting destroyed by iPad in the tablet market so if Google comes along with a successful tablet there will be more developer support and public mindshare to help make it a compelling platform. Also, where else are the OEMs gonna go? Microsoft's launching their own tablet as well.

Ok, that sounds reasonable!

I don't think Microsoft's tablet will be a problem for anyone, It's too expensive for what it is.

I think Google have the right idea here.

What sales?

Seriously. ASUS has had modest sales at best, and they are the most Vanilla out of all the OEMs. Every other OEM that has had better sales than ASUS has pretty much "forked" the OS (Amazon & B&N). Not even sure where Samsung tablets stand in terms of sales.

Play Store getting revamped.

I'm not really knowledgeable on this stuff but how would it do as a meda player? Would it be able to play AVI, MKV files etc.?

Well, the Galaxy tablets have been doing decent numbers (although not close to the iPad or the Galaxy phones, obviously), haven't they?

Not sure, see my extended post above.

If Google wants to have a real presence in the Tablet market they are going to have to push this device (marketing etc). With MS releasing the Surface, they are press to do so.

That looks nice.

Yes yes, 249€ for the 16GB version, sorry. But if there's a micro-SD slot... I'd get the 200€ version for the 8GB then add a microSD to it. I mean prices are ridiculous in Europe > Portugal and it's like that for smartphones and tablets. This Google tablet is a freaking life saver. There ain't even one Tegra 3 device below 400€ here.

I want this tablet for gaming more, as I love my Nexus S and it deals with any game I throw at it incredibly well, thanks to the old yet great PowerVR SGX540, but the 7" screen and 12-core GPU and quad-core CPU should make it future-proof for a good while which is what I also want for any tablet I may purchase in the future.

I wouldn't call that game changing as for 2012 that all seems like what most people were thinking. True test is how well the design itself looks. If it really looks the part as well as hitting all of the check boxes verses looking like a really "cheap" tablet.

I mean are these specs really that different from any other Android tablet that has been released except for just having slightly more up to date specs since this tablet will be the newest one?

That being said if the design is there, and it's treated like a Nexus device with updates direct from google verses having to jump through hoops this'll be the tablet I end up with. Key is will it have an SD card slot as $50 for 8 gigs seems like a lot if I can just get the 8 gig and throw in an SD card instead.

...except that 80% of the options shown there (in the bottom navigation row) will be useless/unavailable to most of the world. Google developing for the US and silently telling everyone else to f*ck off, as usual...

It's unfair to say Google says "Fuck off" to everyone else, when they are legal limitations they have to deal with all across the world (copyrights , licenses, etc). I'm sure this happens (has happen) to Apple too.

Of course, I understand that, but it seems to be taking Google a hell of a lot longer to get things going over here. We don't even have the basic Music service (for uploading and streaming your own music) yet, never mind the music store.

But will it be able to? Do android devices support these formats?
App dependent. Everything I've thrown at dice player has played for me.

------

Are those pogo pins I see on the left and side?

Note to google: if you put pins on your device launch accessories with the device and not six months later .

Yeah, as posted above, Dice Player is teh shit! I can easily play 1080p files on my Galaxy Nexus using that (not that there's much point in doing that considering the 720p screen resolution, but still), and this tablet should be significantly more powerful.

Alleged image of the tablet:

EDIT: Ooops, already posted I see (but not the actual image from what I can tell).

Pins? And the camera seats on top, in the potrait position?

This is one fake as render. How many tablets have the front facing camera in that position?
I guess this is more of a Note than a Tablet?

Bit skeptic, especially since its being shown on a gs3 instead of galaxy nexus

Hey, you gotta start developing for the next Nexus at some point. We all know that the next Nexus will be compiled of leftover S3 components.

Does $199 really make sense for that spec of hardware? Amazon can sell Kindle at a loss because they know they'll get it back through content...is a gmail account really worth that much for Google?

Don't know, but the difference between a living or dead Android tablet market might be?

I feel like Play Store/Market gets revamped every 4 months.

Also, which of you are interested in a 7" tablet? I'm loving the price, but don't know what I would do with it. 10" is just so much more comfortable for browsing.

The one case I think I'd want it is if it doubles as a Google TV device.

That would be kind of awesome. But they have to have the dock and a remote available on day one for it to even get people excited. None of this "Six months later" BS they pulled with the Galaxy Nexus.

Gmail, Google+, Maps, Drive, Books, Movies, Games, etc. They need the presence and a robust echo system or Apple and MS will eat their lunch.

Sure, Google Search is still the best at what it does. But who's to say that Bing won't get better, or Siri search queries surpass it some time down the road? Google cannot afford NOT to be in the game.

I am, for easier browsing and gaming compared to my 4" Nexus S. I saw a person with a 7" tablet the other day and I had no idea it was so small. It's really small and lightweight yet it seemed to me the screen was big enough for nearly every webpage out there and it's definitely as big as it needs to big for games I'll be holding a few centimeters away from me.
