Google Strikes Again: All YouTube Comments Are G+ Username Only

Did you even click on that link? It has NO information at all. Nothing.

I can find out more about you from your NeoGAF profile than I can find out from that G+ page.

I'm all for blowing your lid about privacy issues, but all this is is just another commenting system that has you register a username and password and people do that all over the web. You did it to become a member here too and I don't see you getting all upset over Evilore knowing where you live and what you do for a living.

Seriously, people have this weird problem about a G+ page that they never have to use. It's like people complaining GAF generating a profile page for each user. It makes zero sense. On top of that there are always options to 1) not signing in at all, or 2) creating a fake John Doe account and yet people keep making up a bunch of weird reasons for not liking it.

Would be great if it worked as advertised, I tried commenting and I got fed up of it asking me so I just clicked yes link my Google+ at which point it created a new Youtube channel for me and I lost the 50+ subscriptions I had set up.

I tried clicking in the top right to switch back to my old profile but when I clicked it the page just reloaded to the new profile.

Couldn't figure out how to delink my profile so I have lost all my subscriptions and I can't remember who I was subscribed to.

Thanks Google.

I've never had a problem with G+, I connected everything possible from my youtube to the google+ page and it works fine. I've also never been asked to use my real name.

I don't think it's all that weird that some people don't like being forced to attach a social network they don't use to a service they used. I don't feel that's unreasonable and I'm not sure why anyone would think it is.

In any case, it would be nice if there was some improvement in YouTube comments I guess, but the real name stuff can either be circumvented by fake names or - if other comments sections are any indication - it won't make much of a difference anyway sadly.

You can still choose to use your real name or your YouTube name. I fail to see how this would clean up the comment trolls.

Guess it's been bitched about 100 times so here's one more: what the fuck at the dude who's running the UI design team now. First he hides the good buttons on videos, now he's made it impossible to follow a comment trail for just no reason at all? I wanted to see what the uploader of this video was answering but I can't find a way to. Can't find a way to respond to a specific comment either.

Is this guy some saboteur from a soon-to-launch youtube competitor or is he really this fucking incompetent?

who even reads youtube comments now, seriously
It's worth doing on small channels with niche subjects. For me, that's Magic: The Gathering stuff. The comments are always civil, calm and can actually contribute to discussion.

Never read comments on shit like music videos or viral comedy skits though, obviously.

Thinking about it, the bottom line for me is that this means I will just never log in. Although the next logical step for google may be forcing a user to be logged in to view videos?

Since the "nymwars" broke out on Google+ originally it became clear Google isn't challenging people who enter G+ usernames that look normal to a upper middle class north american white tech guy. So there's plenty of fake names on there that will never raise an eyebrow.

This is an interesting social experiment for Youtube, to be sure. I think it may change the dynamics of comments to a modest degree (at least). But I won't be surprised if it settles back into Facebook territory where trash users proudly post shit with their wallet name and photo attached.

Amazingly, I got a real response from Google. After some back and forth, I'm now at:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,

Thanks for writing back.

1. To change the email address on your YouTube account, please link your YouTube channel to a Google+ page.

If you want to connect your YouTube channel to a Google+ page, you need to make sure it's not currently connected to a different Google+ profile or page.

Once you link your YouTube account to a Google+ page, you can transfer the ownership of the YouTube account (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). The person / Google Account email address you transfer ownership to must first be added as a manager of the page for at least two weeks. For more information on transferring ownership, see the following article: https://support.google.com/plus/answer/2380629?hl=en&ref_topic=3052532.

2. If you're still having trouble, I can help you unlink your YouTube channel (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) from your Google Account (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com). After I've unlinked them, you'll need to link your YouTube channel to a different Google Account. Please note that, a Google Account can have only one YouTube channel. If a Google Account already has a YouTube channel, you won't be able to add another one.

Please write back to confirm if you'd like me to start this process. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks again for getting in touch with us!

Option 2 sounds promising. Will prod for more details.

Goddamn they are really getting pushy with this real name shit. Every other time I am on youtube its the same, despite having repeatedly said I dont want to use my real name. I really regret using it on the email I use with youtube.

I think I will just make a new Youtube account with a new Google mail with just fake details. Its gonna be a bit of a pain to add back in all my subscriptions but at least I wont have to put up with this shit again. Especially if the "choice" they are offering now becomes a forced option in a few months time.

GG google. Look what you made me do.

Youtube isn't letting me post post comments anymore. When I try to click on the comment space, it pops up a new window but then quickly closes.

Anybody know why?

So... real names? Good. It's the only thing that can possibly clean up the cesspool that is the YouTube comments section.

I don't think it'll work. The use of Facebook commenting hasn't stopped comment sections from being cesspools. People say terrible things in comment sections because they believe those terrible things; the anonymity isn't what causes it.

The spamming is bad enough already, now you can post links :\ , also there is a mute option, anyone now what that does? (when you click the little arrow on comments).

Exactly. There's an endless amount of proof of this too. The internet wasn't giving people a new option to be horrible, it was just giving the rest of the world an easier way to see it. It will always be this way. It cannot be fixed.

If I link my youtube to G+ it's probably going to mess up my login on xbmc, which I JUST fixed. I guess I just won't comment or thumb.

Somehow a Google+ page was made for my youtube handle. I guess this works out okay. I'll just never visit the + half

If you don't want to use your real name on YouTube, just set a Google+ page instead of a Google+ profile. It's not like real names are mandatory.

A Google+ Page is a Google+ profile that is owned by another Google+ profile and potentially managed by multiple other Google+ profiles.
All Google+ Pages are still associated with a Google account.
Google+ Pages come with additional and separate Terms of Service, which can and will change whenever Google feels like it.

I don't give a shit about showing my real name on YouTube, I give a shit about managing multiple YouTube channels, keeping Google from selling my YouTube and Google account data together, and preventing my entire Google account from being shut down due to bogus DMCA takedowns or being exposed to the public when Google decides I need fewer privacy options.

It's gotten to the point where I make a new damned Google account and YouTube channel for each new video I post if I think it even has a chance of being taken down. My KeePass database is growing at an alarming rate.

I think youtube just fucked me, I had two accounts my regular channel and my G+ both were linked. Now whenever I try to view my channel page for my old account it lists it as non existent (monkey error and everything) meanwhile my G+ account works fine but has nothing on it.

Same situation here. I had all my subscriptions on a non-G+ account. Now I can't sign into that account. Derp.

Yep I can't even switch back or anything, the option to switch accounts has literally vanished for me.

I'm looking at my own channel, unable to do anything besides subscribe to it. Actively looking for a solution, but I can't even use the "Add acocunt" feature and add the old one.

edit: Every solution i could think of either doesn't work or results in an internal server 500 error including clicking on channel switcher http://www.youtube.com/channel_switcher?next=/

I almost want to chalk this up to a fuck up and this should be fixed soon i hope.

I saw a screenshot posted where the user could choose their "G+ name" from three options:

FirstName Surname
F Surname (i.e. initial of first name)
FirstName S (i.e. initial of surname)

However, I only have the option to use my full name. In fact it appears that is what Youtube has started using, and now I can't change it, seemingly. Is there a way to force it to give me the options of the initial versions?

I don't care about new new change but i really hate how google is trying to force G+ down my throat every chance it get. G+ is dead google, accept it and move on. Your bloated number is not fooling anyone

At least it will deter some people. Of course what you said is true and there are people who truly believe stuff which won't make them stop posting but there are also people who say idiotic stuff because they were behind a username.

This won't change anything.

Did people actually use their real names on google to begin with? My name is like adadsda sdasda.
