Greatest Franchise Downfalls from Debut

Mainline Mario games usualy have this problems, but not for having bad games, but because they sequels to INSANELY GOOD games.

Examples of downfalls:

Donkey Kong > Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros > Super Mario 2
Super Mario World > New Super Mario Bros
Super Mario 64 > Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 > Super Mario 3D Land
I don't think Super Mario 3D Land could really be considered a Super Mario Galaxy sequel.

Exactly. It sold well enough based on the Turok name but publishers are stupid and unless its a COD level success they probably Cba.

I still hope for a return to the Turok world at some point. Maybe if we both wish it really hard tonight it might happen.

Splinter Cell... fucking disgusting what it has become. There is no counter to the MGS franchise coming from the west now.I expect a reboot claiming they're going back to the roots in the next 5- 10 years.Like the majority of these failed sellout ,try to capture a bigger audience instead of letting it grow games.

God it really makes me angry how so many great series went downhill.

Viewtiful Joe. The original was great. The other ones I did not enjoy for some reason and the series just faded away.

I don't get the Dragon Age hate.

I loved 1, I think 1 was better than 2 in practically ever way. I still think 2 was better than the majority of alternatives at the time. I get that it didn't live up to one, and didn't meet our expectations, but I had fun playing it. I still find it a to be a good game, just not a great one...but in the sea of mediocrity that doesn't seem so bad.

Then again, maybe I'm one of the only few that actually enjoyed it.

Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon

Its too much to ask for a decent stealth title or a tactical shooter nowadays.
I think it applies to the entire Tom Clancy brand really.

I mean Vegas 2 was good but that must've been a long time ago.

It was all downhill from GRAW onwards otherwise.

Metal Gear Solid
Gran Turismo
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Sonic
Duke Nukem

Turok is another nice one I have seen mentioned already.

These are all imho of course. Some are obvious, some are just personal.

no Duke Nukem mention?

Also Rumble Boxing. The first one on DC wass great, like the sequel but the 3rd one on Wii killed the IP

Rainbow Six - From tactical gameplay, pre-planning, room clearing and realism to fast paced cover action and soon some bullshit Hollywood movie.

Medal of Honor - One of the best shooters has turned into some cheap bad military shooter.

Ghost Recon - Again, downward spiral.

World of Warcraft - From Vanilla to present day? Game just got worse and worse.

Microsoft Flight Simulator - Had a good run, the chicken broke its neck at FLIGHT.

None of these games will ever return to their former glory.

Samurai Shodown

With the exception of 2 and Special, every version was worse then the preceding one, ending up with Sen.

This series when it launced could have rivaled SF and MK in the US (it was the clear #3 in the early 90's), but SNK dropped the ball so hard.

Ultima Saga: from precursor, juggernaut of the RPG genre and paragon of technological advancement in software development to fucking low cost browser game.

These kinda threads are usually pretty hit and miss. You get a lot of hyperbole in most of the replies (Grand Turismo, MGS, etc) but few answers that actually make sense.

For what it's worth, I'd have to say Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, and Silent Hill are the best examples.

I'd give Bioware another chance before saying Dragon Age is a lost case.

Their reccent direction with, well, everything isn't inspiring any confidence that the third one will be like Origins though.

sonic the hedgehog

Sonic.
Sonic so hard.

Did you guys not play Sonic Colors and/or Sonic Generations, or do you guys actually think Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations are bad?
Cuz they are the best Sonic games since Sonic Adventure....heck id say Sonic Generations was streamlined enough to totally out do Sonic Adventure, but Sonic Adventure had Chao Gardens and Chao Adventure soooo.

On Topic
GTA - GTA 1, 2, 3, VC and SA were absolutely brilliant and fun to no end. GTA4 boring.

FEAR - FEAR fucking brilliant, 2 and 3.....jokes.

Brink. Dead on arrival.

Downfall.....if you start at the bottom you cant get any lower, if Brink 2 is even remotely better than Brink then it will belong in the other thread.

In next DA3 Protagonist will be hermaphrodite.

this franchise downfall was so bad that it may have been forgotten ;)

Guitar Hero

To be serious,

I can't think of a worse downfall for any game series as the one from Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on the PS2 (or ANY fire pro for that matter, even from the Super Famicom)... to the XBLA Avatar game bearing the Fire Pro name.

Also up there - Actraiser. II was much worse, and then the series just died.

DON'T REMIND ME

Metal Gear Solid
Gran Turismo
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Sonic
Duke Nukem

I don't understand. It is flawed but it has been quite consistent with previous games. I'd say it's the most constant game series in the industry. For better and for worse.

Fable

People can say whatever they want about the hype but Fable 1 was a fun game with lots of good ideas that I would have liked other RPG's to copy, had a nice storyline, some quests with good choices and a great atmosphere.

Fable 2 unfortunately removed some of the fun ideas from the first one, but made the quests better and the combat really fun.

Fable 3 though, is one of the worst games I have ever played, where nothing at all makes any sense, no mechanics works together, the quests doesn´t fit the story and everything is so juvenile and stupid that I´m embarrased to even play it.

Crysis. The first half of Crysis 1 is a sandbox where you are set in huge maps and have a ton of weapons and abilities to approach things how you want. The downfall actually happens like 2/3s of the way through the first game and sets the tone for the sequels.

Mass Effect 2 is a better game in terms of mechanics and controls, but as an overall experience ME1 is just the best of the series. They should do a third one to finish up the story, really excited to see where they're going.

To be completely honest I really can't think of many series that are like this. There are series that have had fluctuating quality over time (Metal Gear Solid) but there are basically none that I can think of where the first game is indubitably the best.

I think probably the most likely progression is that a game in the middle of the series is the best, and the quality arranges itself in a bell curve around that. The first game is the developer trying on new duds and seeing what works. The second game is them improving on what they learned while making it bigger better and badder. The third game is trying to deliver what made the second game so great. But if you end up delivering just 'more of the same' then it feels repetitious. Or if you try and exceed it there's a good chance you'll come off the rails. See: Killzone 2->3, Uncharted 2->3.

The games I'd consider have already been stated, but I did want to say this. Sonic has went through a lost these past few years. Sonic Team lost direction, Sega lost direction, and the hedgehog had a huge drinking problem. Now Sonic team seems to have righted the ship, Sega has found new purpose in their digital download future, and Sonic is well on his way to sobriaty.

Oh cool, a Sonic thread.

Sonic Adventure was the worst game in the series when it was released. And rereleases of the game reviewed very poorly. That Sonic Adventure is continually held up as some sort of landmark release for the 3D Sonic games speaks pretty loudly to how far the series has fallen. Remember, this series used to compete head to head with the classic Mario games in terms of quality.

Dragon Age is the obvious answer. Another one that comes to mind is Valkyria Chronicles. It could have been one of the premier franchises of the generation...

Weird no one's mentioned CoD.

With CoD4 IW nailed the presentation and immersion by making everything in the game into gameplay which meant that the immersion never broke.

So many scenes in that game that are so memorable.

Then MW2 came around and it was great, not as memorable but they still nailed the gameplay part while I also liked the multiplayer more. To this day MW2 is my most played multiplayer-game.

Then BLOPS came out and the campaign became a joke in terms of playability, and MW3 just continued that fashion while feeling so incredibly gray and lifeless, like there was absolutely no passion for the game.
