Horizon franchise (from Guerrilla) has reached 40 Million units sold

One and done. First game was great and second was a damn bore. It's pretty to look at but just not fun at all. Alloy then now is randomly a scissor grinder. Nah fam I am done.

I've enjoyed both games quite a lot. No game is perfect and there are definitely things I'd like to see improved upon but it's a fun world to run around in and I look forward to the next installment.

How many of those were given away for free? I know I have the license to a free copy.
Usually when they say "sold" they're referring to sold through. Sold to a customer. So games given for free as GPU promos, PS+ free games, etc, are not included in the "Units sold" number. Definitely not included on any sort or earnings report as "unit sold"

Games you get for free as part of a giveaway are counted as an expense. Typically against the marketing budget.

It's why a lot of companies use "5 million players" instead of "3 million sold + 2 million giveaways".

Is Guerilla still in business? Are they working on something?
Forbidden West came out 3 years ago, Burning Shores came out 2 years ago.

Since then they've worked with other studios to release Call of The Mountain and Lego Horizon, while their primary project has been the sequel to Forbidden West. I'm guessing that project is many years away.

I assume Aloy is naturally attracted to both men and women, and gets to choose who she dates. That's the point I was trying to making.
Elizabeth Sobec was in a lesbian relationship, with no signs of other partners.
Since Aloy is Sobec clone, it makes since that she would be the same way.

Aloy rejected every male approach in H:ZD, but it was never obvious as to why.
I just assumed she was only interested in the mission, back then.

I don't think that ever made any sense to me at all. I don't think someone can be born lesbian, Aloy was born in a total different ambient and situation.

Damn, that's a lot. Of course, many of those sales were at bargain-basement prices. Still, 40 m. is nothing to sneeze at.

I loved the first game. I thought the second was mediocre. I will probably play the third just to see how the trilogy (?) wraps up, but I don't expect it to be very good.

Aside from Tom Brady's dog, we have no idea how identical clones actually are, so I can't speak to that.

The comment I made that you initially responded to was me saying it doesn't make sense to be upset over Aloy choosing to be in a relationship with a woman. If she's a lesbian - the obvious choice, if she wants to pursue a relationship - is Seyka. If she's bi, then Seyka is one of multiple choices.

Either way, Seyka is a choice that makes sense for the character as she's been presented up to that point.

I really liked the second game, much more than the first. I never really got why GAF hates it so much. Seems like it really is a bubble based on sales.

It's normal that they're a success and the saga has sold 40 million copies; both are great games and candidates for GOTY in their year, what GAF says is irrelevant.

It's generally a good game.

HOWEVER, the story wasn't as interesting, the combat (although improved) still feels lacking in overall fluidity, and lacked the option to at least reduce the amount Aloy would talk to herself (giving away puzzle answers), IN MY OPINION.

I'm hoping the next game will significantly improve Aloy fighting mechanics, make the story feel more impactful, and or let us play as a different character.

The combat is good to me now and I don't need any improvements there (but will welcome them trying of course). Well actually one thing I would like is for them to tone down the robots and how long it takes to take them out. Some of the fights last way to long. I understand it might be more realistic but I just want to play the game and not spend so much time trying to take out one robot. I agree about the puzzles.

Love the series and the MMO will be HUGE.

Edit: Sony announced the franchise at 38 million 3 months ago

How did the series reach 40 million? Like they're not bad games but they're not exceptional either. How does Horizon surpass something like TLOU in sales which has had far better critical acclaim and a cultural footprint?

The biggest problem of this game franchise is that it's not risky or doesn't let you feel scared of the monsters or the world. It's so basic, bland, colorful and safe for something quite unique and cool and supposedly dangerous. I tried looking for a soul but nope, nothing. The theme/grand story doesn't match the color palette, goofiness and lackadaisical flow of the game.

In contrast, pick Far Cry Primal. It's one of the rawest survival game out there, there's always this sense or feeling of danger. Or pick Control. Or even Witcher 3. Maybe it's me, I like mystery and risk and tension in my games.

But good god, Horizon games are really gorgeous.

I think TLOU series has surpassed 40 million but I could be wrong.

The masses love open world Ubisoft style games

I guess:

- First game was free during COVID
- bundled game
- kinda family friendly, less gore and not doesn't feel serious
- in contrast to other games the amount of female players is a lot because of point 3 and MC is female

I didn't really like Forbidden west and dropped it quite early, but got to give credit where its due because 40m is kinda insane for the franchise. Has any other Sony ip sold that fast? Gran turismo maybe?

Not my favorite series but a damn good one nonetheless. A monster hunter like would be a really good addition that makes sense with the dino robots and having a MMO is always my comfort food that I do hope they bring that to PS5 too. As much as the series gets downplayed, it's great to see it actually does sell pretty well.

I rate these games, despite them being woke af. I have no problem with woke games (/media) when they earn their own success from the ground up, rather than by hijacking already successful normal people franchises and ruining them.

ZD is the better game imo because unravelling wtf happened to the world is the most interesting part. FW doesn't really have that benefit, and its overarching story and where it takes the franchise is retarded, but there's some cool parts, and the world they built is incredible.

I platinumed both mainline games and it's just ok. They need to chill with this franchise before they end up with people actively pushing back against the franchise.

It seems to be selling in spades though so what the fuck do I know.

Decima is so beautiful, Horizon and Death stranding are two of the most beautiful franchises out there. And it performs so well, I would love to see a new IP with this engine.

Playing the first game was enough to stay away from this series.

Just like Pokémon no matter how popular they I never going to be in to them.

I only was in because of the hype of the first one. Having played the first Horizon made me really think that I want nothing to do with this franchise ever again.
Yeah I bought the first one for $10 and felt like I overpayed. Not sure how you make a game about fighting robot dinosaurs in a post apocalypse so dull.

Not without flaws, but I liked the first one, the problem is that Sony is making worse sequels (Last of Us, Gow, this) .

One of the most astroturfed, forced franchises in gaming. How Guerilla went from Killzone to this garbage just boggles my mind. I would kill for a Killzone 2 and 3 remaster on PS5. All it needs is a rez bump to 4k and 60 frames.

tbf, horizon is a good franchise overall but atrocious main character.
i really dont like aloy

Great series, well deserved. I 100% completed both Horizons and their DLC, and I still need to replay the PS5 remaster of Zero Dawn when I have some time to tackle the backlog. I love fighting the machines, and the games are gorgeous to look at.

Horizon Zero Dawn became SIE's best selling game ever.

I think the series budgets need to be scaled back. They made a good game with a reasonable budget with the first one. But horizons 2 budget is insane and that's not sustainable.

$200 million is high. That's $40 Million a year for it's 5 years development cycle. Being that a Horizon 3 isn't coming out in 2027...........I hate to hear it being in development for 6 or 7 years. Maybe they took some years off to make their own GAAS game.

I do agree with you that unraveling things in the 1st game was impossible to recreate in the 2nd. Where it goes is a little silly, but can be absolutely perfect is written well in the 3rd game. Where they can go can blow minds. The 3rd game basically needs to almost feel like a different franchise to some degree and this IP can be taken to a whole new level. They CAN NOT be safe with the 3rd game.

Sales do not equate to quality. I bought both games and I gotta agree with the guy, the games are pretty average in terms of fun/gameplay.. Great graphics though.

And many others believe one of the best things about the game is the gameplay and the fun you have. So........
