Greatest Franchise Downfalls from Debut

Mass Effect is still excellent - everyone needs to chill and adhere some vaseline to butthurt extremeties, it's a great trilogy.

The story in ME 2 and 3 are pure garbage. the ME trilogy could be the poster child for why it's a terrible idea of setting out to create a trilogy, but only write the story one part at a time.

Silent Hill is definitely one of the worst offenders. Downfall was horrible and I almost didn't finish it. The ending was so mediocre. But I guess you just can't beat the second's insane ending.

Turok is another with the second being amazing. Then it just dumped itself in the trash.

Dragon Force -> Dragon Force 2
Shining series with Camelot -> Shining series after Camelot
Valkyria Chronicles -> Valkyria Chronicles 2
Virtual On & Oratorio Tangram -> Force and Marz
Gunstar Heroes & Guardian Heroes -> Gunstar Super Heros & Guardian Super Heroes

This generation... Mass Effect has to be the biggest disappointment. Even more so than Dragon Age, IMO since I anticipated Mass Effect releases more.

Command & Conquer

CnC 3 was fantastic. Then you had Red Alert 3 with the horrible, horrible DRM (a sneak peak at what was to come). Then they practically killed the franchise with CnC 4, which was an awful stripped down version of the previous games.

Valkyria Chronicles was definetly the worst for me. Way to completetly screw up the setting.

What was wrong with the setting in two or three?

Thought they were pretty great, would obviously have preferred a PS3 release, but they were damn great for PSP games and were very faithful to the PS3 release.

Everyone's a critic, eh.
Personally I love the ME series and think it's one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.
Apart from the ending that confused the hell out of me, I think ME3 had the best character wrap-ups I've experienced.

But I do agree that I'd rather have a game with an entire story instead of parts to be on the safe side. (I'm looking at you Shen Mue)

Mainline Mario games usualy have this problems, but not for having bad games, but because they sequels to INSANELY GOOD games.

Examples of downfalls:

Donkey Kong > Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros > Super Mario 2
Super Mario World > New Super Mario Bros
Super Mario 64 > Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 > Super Mario 3D Land

I don't understand, you don't count SMG2 as a sequel but you do to 3D land?

And why isn't Super mario bros. 3 here? is it because it's not a sequel?

Banjo-Kazooie

Didn't even think about this. I remember when I saw the initial screenshot of Banjo walking that tightrope in the hub world thinking it was going to be one of my favorite games of all time. A true Banjo sequel! Next gen graphics! GIANT open worlds!!!!

Then fucking CARS. You build CARS!!! My god, I almost got sick. What a giant piece of crap that was. Rare can go to hell.

Ultima Saga: from precursor, juggernaut of the RPG genre and paragon of technological advancement in software development to fucking low cost browser game.

This takes the cake. The influence of Ultima to the RPG genre is impossible to underestimate. Ultima was the premiere WRPG series for over a decade, with Ultima VII 1 and 2 becoming the crown jewel of the franchise before it imploded and finally died with a whimper.

People complain about Dragon Age 2. It's certainly a disappointment compare to the scale and ambition of its predecessor, but it's not garbage. It's not a shit game. It's playable and well put together. Just watch Spoony's Ultima retrospective and witness the abominations they tried to pass off as games with Ultima VIII (which even changed genres from RPG to platformer) and specially IX.

You're completely insane. It's one of the best games of this generation.

Samurai Shodown

With the exception of 2 and Special, every version was worse then the preceding one, ending up with Sen.

This series when it launced could have rivaled SF and MK in the US (it was the clear #3 in the early 90's), but SNK dropped the ball so hard.

Absolutely, 2 was such a high note. 3 was alright and Sen was great, but everything else was a major letdown. Easily my number 1.

From 40-50h epic unique journey of squad 7 directed by Biology-weirdo Welkin including many very emotional scenes with tactical combat incorporated into canvas engine about defending your country from enemy invasion, fighting with racism and very good love story.

to

100h of grinding directed by happy-go-lulky idiot with brother complex, accompanied with class glass animu president-like Zeri doing preaty much 1000 of meaningless missions.

It looks like SEGA didn't want to continue polishing what was very good about Valkyria and they changed formula to anime school drama with tons of grind missions.

Yes VC2 is very good PSP game but original was 10x times better. I don't remember any point in VC1 when i need to repeat same mission over and over beside skimrish. In VC1 all main missions were well directed with a lot of drama in them. Menhwhile almost all of VC 2 mission are rinse and repeat.

Didn't play VC3 since there is no translation/

Watching it. Very interesting. However, the mic and the terrible recording sound makes it almost unbearable to watch.

He oughta do a private recording for Youtube.

He did a talk at the Practice NYU Game Center event last year that was much better, but that was the only example I could find. I thought it was interesting.
