Did anybody do The Frozen Maw? I saw it idling when I was chasing Moas yesterday, and I just found out one of my buddies not in GAF did it last night. His descriptions made it sound pretty damn cool for something a newbie zone.

The Frozen Maw was hard as hell for melee characters so I had to abandon it halfway in since the portal near it was contested and the hassle wasn't worth it. The premise was awesome though.

There were just too many ice elementals for me to maintain my mobility and I had other shit I wanted to do. The priests and their portals were really cool.

Yeah, I did it with my Guardian. A lot of those pesky Ice Elementals and a last boss with stupid close range AoEs. The progression was cool though, and it could last up to 1 hour I think.

Glad to hear that. I could understand them keeping them somewhat tame for the starting areas. I just wasn't able to sink the time in this weekend to really get out of those areas and explore.

Some of the ones past the grassy area where you begin with the Nords got really intense and lasted quite a while. I guess they are trying to easy people in.

The Foothills had some really fun ones that ran nearly constantly, like the escort through the mines and the food protection (as long as there weren't so many people that 30 enemies spawned at once).

I think my favorite thing in the beta was finding a random necromancer down in the swamp (Queensdale), reading the book he talked about, and summoning some flesh-eating creature from hell that I had to beat down. I love that kind of stuff.

Not until it's embedded in the minds of all users on GAF! Nah, I'm just really curious about other people's opinions on when the game could come out now that people had the opportunity to play it.
There is no chance this game comes out in November. The game is content ready obviously and the couple months they have to fine tune everything is all they will really need. After playing the game, I firmly will stick with my July estimate. I believe they are just working out the bugs of the game.

An August release is just about the longest I can wait for GW2. Not sure how I'd manage to wait longer than that without losing some interest. An open beta once a month won't really cut it either if the wait is 4+ months.

I think beginning of August and at most middle to end of July is the time frame I expect. Anything longer and you will have people annoyed with all the BWE that will result in people having their characters they grow attached to wiped or they will do the unthinkable and let you pay with gems to have your characters stay. ;-)

Anything less and they probably won't have enough time to get all the issues ironed out and also tested. I mean it's pretty great at this point and you can't really compare a heart area to a regular quest in a MMO but there needs to be exp tuning.

I don't mind the melee vs. range imbalance that much.

You're zoomed pretty far out there buddy, and the fish doesn't have a particularly detailed or high res texture, it has a lot of effects and bump mapping. There's a difference.
gw037.jpg
That's MAX settings. Look at the textures on her shirt. They all look like that. shit is low res son. Now, that doesnt mean it looks BAD.
that's not some kind of personal affront when someone says it has low res textures. It means the textures are low res. It's fine. the game is still pretty, we'll live.

This was a good post. The game has very serious balance issues and doesn't give the player good feedback about what's killing them and how they can stop it from killing them. Some enemies just seemed to do insane damage, particularly whenever they applied a burning effect to me. Fighting multiple enemies at once is typically suicide, and the aggro system in the game feels janky and unpolished compared to standard MMO fare.

Fighting enemies with level advantages on you typically results in shitstomping of your face. This directs me to another problem: I was consistently underleveled in spite of doing every single event I could and every single area quest in TWO ZONES. I went through both the human and norn ones on my warrior and I was still underleveled. This is just fucked. The XP scaling needs to be rebalanced.

This would help with the problem of fighting enemies with level advantages, but there is still a problem with it: events tended to spawn enemies 2-3 levels higher than the listed level for the event. This is just plain unfair considering the way the game seems to give them advantages in damage. Also, scaling the player's level back to the area they are in is just plain fucking stupid. RPGs should never force that on you. It should be an option like sidekicking is in CoH/CoV.

The dodge system. It doesn't feel right. It feels laggy, it feels ineffective, I rarely know when to use it and it often doesn't work. The energy limitation on how often you can do it is very strict (probably for PvP balance purposes) which makes it feel utterly useless in PvE. Oftentimes fighting a heavily scaled up boss they will perform attacks that will instagib everyone in an AoE. In the first place, this is fucking bullshit. In the second place, they give you no indication that they are doing this whatsoever, so you don't even have a chance to avoid it even if you had somehow mastered the laggy, ineffective dodging system.

The PvE in the game just often feels unfair. You can use all your cooldowns, all of your abilities, all of your dodges and be left with nothing but an autoattack and still feel like you are insufficiently strong to handle basic challenges. There is a fine line to making a game feel challenging and making a game feel like fucking bullshit, and GW2 strays to the bullshit side. You'll find yourself in combat with enemies who respawn on your head and pound you into the dirt in seconds. You'll find yourself fighting groups of 2-3 enemies at a time that can't be split and pound you into the dirt. You'll find yourself up against veteran enemies in instances that scale your level, spawn multiple adds, and pound you into the dirt.

This isn't Dark Souls, it's a fucking MMO. I died more in this than I died playing Dark Souls because at least in that game I felt like the abilities at my disposal functioned properly and gave me a fighting chance if all fully utilized. This game just pisses me off.

The game didn't feel laggy to me at all, dodging felt exactly how I would expect it to. Did you swap it from double tap to a key? double tapping is inherantly not going to be as responsive.
I do think it was harder than it should be, but I never felt like I lost because the control was bad or unresponsive.

I think somewhere in between August - Nov. Game wasn't as polished as I had hoped, although it's definitely pretty solid. I came across numerous performance issues/bugs/balance issues in the beta. But really we need to see just how much better the next beta is, a lot of this stuff might be easy to remedy for all I know.

I think he's zoomed to a reasonable level for actually playing the game. I don't know how often I'll be zoomed in to the level you are showing off the low-res textures there. And even at that level I don't think it's that bad, the hair is what stands out to be the most- but all in all I'm glad they're not devoting too many resources to that in favor of making things look nice the way you see them the majority of the time.

Also it's worth making note that the graphical options in the beta may not actually be the max. Low and high setting didn't have a huge difference and a couple of the press in the last beta said it had had a graphical improvement over the build they played in the previous closed beta. I'm not sure if the build we saw this weekend is the build the press saw in the lest beta but I would still keep it in mind.

It's certainly possible but we have no way to know. You can absolutely see the settings change as you move the slider though, and there is a checkbox for 'high resolution textures' for players and that is definitely on. Didn't try turning it off and back to see if it was truly enabled though I guess, to compare the difference.

Honestly, there might be touch-ups but I don't think it's going to be like TOR where they withheld a graphical setting. What we're seeing is probably what we're getting.

High quality character models are not in yet. Changing the setting did nothing. The game in its entirety is still going to be pretty low-poly though, I agree with that.

Yep, I did and agree with Jayge. I was using a Mace and Shield so I stood no chance. My FPS was dropping like crazy so I had not idea what was happening, along with the ice tornados (or whatever they were) blowing around.

Very very cool event. Sold me on DE.

Edit: and of course they locked out content - it's a weekend beta. No one could have got much farther past 30. People barely got to the Ascalon dungeons.

Couple things:

Crafting items was supposed to give XP to your leveling bar, but it was bugged for beta.

I saw one guy who posted his character who had got to 40.

And this guy said he was talking with an ANet dev who said they'll be announcing the next BWE date "shortly". ANet's definition of shortly will likely mean a week. I'm guessing May 25th-27th.

dude, you're zoomed all the way in. I don't think they have particularly wonderful textures in the game, but you need to look at it from the distance you will be playing at, in which case it probably has more pixels than your iphone retina display can even show.

some of the buildings, on the other hand? yikes.

I didn't play with engineer this time around. If anyone did and they were able to play with the elixir gun, and grenades can i have your opinions and impressions of them?

I'm considering elixir gun and or grenades over flamethrower. Flamethrower is an awesome device, just would like to see how the others were.

Thanks :)

There are screens when You arent that 'zoom out'. Fish is close to the screen, cougar too, nord male guardian on earlier page same.

And by the look of npcs behind Your hero, You definitely havent turn on 'high res texture for characters' option in graphics menu.

And even my shots are close, because when i normally play they are further in every situation [checked on my shots that i'm making every second with fraps].

Well...this changes EVERYTHING. So I never tried it but it seems you can right click any crafting material, cooking ingredient, or minipet and click Deposit Collectible and it'll go into your bank from anywhere in the world. For those who didn't see it, there's a specific tab built JUST for holding all crafting/cooking/minipets on your bank tab.

well damn. This could've saved inventory space. *sigh*. They should have a setting where all materials go to to the bank.

Small question because I'm not sure right now if I'm remembering correctly. Do player characters physically occupy the space they are in? Is there a way to form a line of warriors at the front that can not be run through by enemies?

I'm asking because I have the feeling that when I'm fighting a thief and he disappears I often feel blocked in random spots and try to do a AoE to reveal him.

I didn't know about that option or that tab. Unleash the next beta weekend. I'm ready to test this feature.

You run into your target. That's about the extent of it I know. I don't how technical it gets beyond that. As in like you said if a long line of people formed could an enemy not run through? Interesting, not sure.

I had found out about the materials tab on the first day and nearly squealed with excitement because honestly it's so simple, yet makes so much damn sense that I'd always wondered why no one else but ANet had done it outside of GW1. Here's a pic of the material storage if you didn't get to see it:

I did this for some things initially but I was able to start making bags in abundance pretty quickly and never actually needed the space after that. You can also craft specific crafting material bags to hold and organize mats, but they take up a bag slot and aren't as versatile (and are equally as spacious) as the other bags so they weren't that favorable to use without unlocked extra slots.

The issue with this is that bank tellers are quite hard to find across the map and are only really accessible in cities (barring Asuran Bank Portal use). They were also quite far from the crafting stations when I found them.

Should they implement crafting-from-the-bank as many are suggesting in the crafting section of the official forums this would be an absolutely killer feature. Space management as it was didn't really turn out to be an issue anyway though, because right clicking also allowed you to instantly sell anything not-soulbound on the market and it allowed you to reduce semi-trash clutter really fast with barely any hassle at any time.

Edit: Also I got some minis from buying a pack, did anyone get any from anything else? They were alright but way too tiny for me so I just sold them.

Had this problem. The fight is really tough because he hits hard but the area is set up to restrict his movement. It was while I played as a Norn Elementalist on Friday, and after a few minutes I gave up and did some other quest. I still got credit for helping at least.

Then quest I did do (help a kid set up some scarecrows) caused another event change within a few minutes...

Also, out of all the races, the Charr have the best DEs out of all the races. Keffex Hills has some awesome series DEs but other than that Charr is the most entertaining and fun.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. As a Human Queensdale wasn't terrible for a starting area, I was able to find DEs fairly regularly, but once I got into Kessex Hills (which I started exploring around lvl 18) it was incredibly hard to find any events and if I did they were scaled heavily against me. I completely every Heart I could, yet I still found myself underleveled.

Move to the 15-25 Charr area this was never an issue. Each heart/outpost would have at least two events going on, and usually they were pretty interesting. There was always something to do and most of the time it was pretty enjoyable.

Edit: Damn, I wish I had known about about the Collectible Deposit, would have saved me so much bag space. :(

Hawkian's gamepad guide about 10 pages back was extremely useful. I ended up creating my own profile though as I preferred a different layout, but it was excellent for inspiration and the end results were pleasant. Circle strafing enemies is so stupidly easy, and I can't possibly play with mouse/keyboard now. Gamepad is seriously the way to go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHDMD6FNcHk

I ended up mapping my wired 360 controller this way:

Left Analog = Movement
Right Analog = Camera
LB = Dodge
RB = Tab Targetting
A = Jump
X = 1
Y = 2
B = 3
RT + A = Interact/Loot
RT + X = 4
RT + Y = 5
RT + B = 6
LT + A = 0
LT + X = 7
LT + Y = 8
LT + B = 9
Select = Swap Weapon Set
Start = Map
Left Stick Button = Autorun
Right Stick Button = Toggle Mouse Cursor
D-Pad Left = F1
D-Pad Up = F2
D-Pad Right = F3
D-Pad Down = F4

You can't go completely mouse-less with this set-up like you can with Hawkian's, but I found it more intuitive for combat, and I prefer to just grab the mouse in the event that I need to interact with the map or menus anyway. The analog stick just doesn't have the precision I need.

While there's still optimization to be done, it was nice running Guild Wars 2 at 2560x1440 on my iMac under bootcamp. I had to turn shaders to medium and shadows to high, but everything else was maxed out and FXAA was running. The only time my framerate dropped into the teens was when I'd come out of the water and had all the droplets with the distortion effects on my screen. I usually was sitting in the mid 30s, so I'm excited to see how the game runs when it starts utilizing my GPU more effectively.

Ha, yeah I could easily have saved money in multiple areas but I decided to just really beast as much as I felt was reasonable. I'm going to OC it, of course. Probably to 4.5-4.7 or so. This system should last me quite a while. As for internet, We have the highest package deal with Cox, but I unfortunately have to resort to a wireless NIC which I also purchased with all this other stuff. Should be really strong signal and I also have a repeater set up in my office so I should be alright. Would be nice to have a direct connection to the router but it's in my roommate's office :|
