HaloGAF |OT: Anniversary| So fades the great harvest of our betrayal.

I hope they have clever stuff in mind for Locke's gameplay.
I think halo 2's campaign overall was poop. Outside of the story I don't know why people liked it so much. The flood were ruined as an enemy and then they added goofy gorilla brutes. They ruined hunters and gave them the most annoying noise ever. And they added drones which are also stupid. The only likable additional for me were the prophets.
my opinion!
I think people will remember this when they replay it this year. Halo 2's campaign / moment to moment flow just isn't as good as the others.

They're smart, they want to show us Nightfall first, featuring Colter so that we grow attached to the character like Lasky, and unlike Palmer so that when the game comes, we're excited for Locke and his missions.

I don't think they'll play much differently at all, and sort of like the Arbiter, Locke might have different visor effects and brand new cutting edge Oni stuff, whereas Chief is the tried and true old style, his visor has a crack etc. Making one have ADS and blood effects and the other being classic Halo is ridiculous though. I think it'll just be normal game play.

Wait. Wait, wait, wait.

This "element". Could it be the first human's "cure" to the Flood? That was designed to kill humans as a way to remove the Flood's source of bodies. Is that right? Could the Forerunners discovered this and have it stored on their ring only to be discovered later?

Ancient humans altered their genes to not be tasty for the flood so the flood coul not eat them but that was actually a trap.

That interview is pretty cool. I love how intelligent and thoughtful the actor is -- I hope that's reflected in his character / script, too. Halo could finally have a black character that doesn't come off as a one dimensional stereotype!

Don't you dare diss the JOHNSON

Eh, was responding to what Wahrer said.

Do you guys think the lackluster response for Palmer lead to the creation of Locke as a character? I mean if you played Spartan Ops, it was obvious they were pushing her as someone who followed what ONI says etc. Maybe originally, they planned her to be the half star of Halo 5: Guardians, and grow to be a fan favorite as well?

I never really thought of Johnson as a stereotype.

I mean, he's cool, but he's totally based on the classic and oft-repeated drill instructor persona. Not that that's a bad thing, it's just not especially original.

I know I just loved his wisecracks and funny remarks, nothing can replace that :'(

FU Bungie that death was pointless and unneeded

hes based on Danny Glover in Predator 2, Yaphet Kotto in Alien, carl weathers in predator. basically an amalgam of all the badass military black guys from the 70s on

I played the campaign earlier this year and it was just as good as i remembered. Actually perhaps even better than i remembered.

I like the pacing (Halo 2 has nice amount of no-combat sections, usually with nice vistas) and generally speaking the encounter design is good, some issues aside (the vehicles are a tad slow and heavy, the Jackal Snipers are too strong really, there are a few choke-points that favor the enemies heavily with no alternative routes). But of course all Halos have issues with their encounters so this is forgivable.
The encounters are unfortunately small and sometimes wave-based but that does offer alternative ways to deal with them too, big encounters require different tactics.
The missions do feel a bit claustrophobic at times, having rather limited corridors and open areas are relatively small, or sterile, empty. Memory limits of the original Xbox explain this and the encounter sizes, i think.

Perhaps the biggest issue with Halo 2 is that its gunplay is... kind of meh. Not bad but it lacks something. Halo 3's is definitely better though some issues persist (and some were added like slowed movement). Reach's is even better... ignoring the shitty movement and bloom and general lack of power for the normal weapons. And Halo 4's feels even better IMO, hopefully Halo 5 will top 4 in this regard. Not sure if Halo 2's gunplay is an improvement to Halo CE's or sidestep though.

But the amount of memorable sections... i actually think Halo 2 has much more memorable sequences than any other Halo. Disarming the bomb, driving on the beaches of Old Mombasa, the fight in the city center and the Scarab, the first time in the Arbiter's... uh, hooves?, fighting the Heretic leader (and the frustration!), the orbital drop on Delta Halo, the battle at the extendable bridge, the underwater transporter, approaching Regret's temple and beating the crap out of him, exiting the wall and seeing a Forerunner aerial platform come down on fire, the race for the Library, the fight through High Charity and the beautiful interiors of the place, the fight in the Mausoleum, the Brutes' betrayal of the Elites, the Flood taking over High Charity, the Chief leaving Cortana behind, escorting Johnson and the Scarab breaching the doors of the control room... and of course the notorious cliffhanger ending.
And more. All Halos have good sections, memorable ones but Halo 2 definitively takes the crown for me.

EDIT Halo 2 does have its share of issues. Some i mentioned before like tight maps, then there's the generally weak AI (not really much of an improvement over Halo CE's), Legendary being rather cheap...

I feel like if someone doesnt like Locke as a character after Nightfall is released they will get called a racist.

Just justify your criticism and you'll be fine. If you just post "man this new guy sucks" or "halo needs better protags" without any further clarification, yeah, that's shady. If you had an explanation that wasn't racially-charged, for example the fact that Locke's literally wearing Duke Nukem's outfit, that'd be a different story.

Not liking someone isn't racist unless you don't like them because you're racist, lol. And really, it's more common for racist attitudes to be unacknowledged and implicitly validated than for people to throw around baseless accusations of racism.

True its all in the justification. I just want Locke to not be "Male Palmer". also holy hell he is wearing Duke Nukem cosplay.

I tried getting an answer to this question back when the Halo 5: Guardians thread was relevant but never got one. I'm worried Halo 5's campaign will be online-only required. That would completely destroy my excitement.

Do you think i have anything tangible to worry about?

Probably. Look how many people say those who didn't like Palmer are sexist somewhat, and I remember a few months back, someone said they didn't like Traviss' writing and someone called them sexist and misogynist.

But I think because of Nightfall, he'll instantly be a fan favorite or more well liked, just like Lasky.

Highly unlikely. Halo is MS's biggest thing, online-only would kill it utterly.

I hope you're right. I think it's awesome multiplayer is so huge for Halo, i love it myself but i buy the games for the campaign and i would really like that to remain true.

Spartan Ops was locked to online-only....:/

Does anyone know when all the singleplayer content ends for Destiny, cause i finished a level 5 story mode and now theres nothing to do but random events on Old Russia

Honestly one didn't miss out much by missing SpOps. Just watch the cutscenes from Youtube...
It was locked to online only as a way to pay for it, apparently. It did have quite a lot of content for "free" missions, even though i'm not a fan of the quality. So much potential... Should have been more like an additional campaign. Replacing 5 missions with one more developed one... how awesome that would have been!

Isn't the XBO Day One Patch online-only anyways?
AFAIK yes but Solid presumably meant as requiring XBL Gold.

No more story content in the beta. Demo.

Trailer was sick as hell. I'm loving the use of the monks in all of the recent promotional material. Hopefully the whole Halo theme will be integrated into Halo 5.

Basically, i want to be able to play Halo 5: Guardians campaign on my Xbox One with no internet connected, that's all i ask. It's not much.

I seriously doubt you will need to be online to play the campaign.
Destiny has the justification of being a pseudo-MMO and the servers handling a lot of stuff.
The last time MS tried to require online, the results were interesting... I very much doubt this will be repeated with Halo.

Somewhat related:
I do wonder if the AI could be updated using MS's cloud systems? Gather data from people who do play online, and use the data to update the AI to fight smarter (or be worse if necessary)? This should be optional of course.

seems like you are out of the loop on MS' policies on always online.

Not at all, just making assumptions upon the relevancy of online only games. Two big games this year, Titanfall and Destiny are both online-only (though the former is hardly talked about any more) then there is the fact that Spartan Ops was online required even though all content was either on the disc or downloaded. Then there is the factor that the new crackdown will be entirely powered by the cloud, rendering it unplayable offline i would assume?

Like i said these are just assumptions based on things that have happened more so recently.

Thank you Woorloog for the reassurance, means a lot!

Oh man, playing Halo after Destiny feels so good!

Even with 4's random Ordnance drops and spawning with cloak it's so, very much better than Destiny's competitive MP. It's so much more precise, and far less cluttered or frustrating. Even though I was playing shit. Kept trying to double jump.

Well now I'm just sad :( unless people want to do strike missions and play some multiplayer for shits and gigs im most likely already done with the beta. is there a way to access the moon or?

The Moon is not in the beta. It is pretty clear about that. Gotta rope people in by giving them something they want but can't get...

Thanks. Just wasn't super clear to me it felt like I just didn't have the requirements (It says that when you look at the moon right), it felt like I was not doing something right, I searched around for like an hour trying to see if there was another mission. Kinda wish there was a little message at the end of that mission just saying that I was done.

Old Russia gets old fast imo

Is that the ship which crashes and is leaking atmosphere which 342 guilty spark is looking at?

What the hell was that all about...?
Yeah it had a similiar atmosphere to the installation, but due to protocol spark was forced to quarantine it. At least that's how I remember it.
Nothing's been mentioned about it since.

Destiny beta is pretty fun, MP is okay I guess.

At level 8, the game says you're at max level for the beta.
And activating the Moon missions says "see ya in September". I'd say those are pretty clear messages.
Though they can be easily missed...
