Why are they even including such a feature? Wont it alter the sandbox a large amount if you've got to count for all these abilities?

- Don't post long-winded rants, megaposts, etc. in here without context. If you have an idea on a really cool Newtonian-principle-modifying handheld forearm aperture, provide some background information such as "Halo made me think of X, therefore Y." Disembodied masses of random information will get you the boot. Plenty of lengthy posts make it in here and are lauded, such as those from Karl and The Henery - this is because they're informative, completely statistically factual or otherwise taking informative notes on existing concepts and not trying to pull new ones out of thin air, and generally keep themselves well-paced either by persuasive narrative or supplementary media, like infographics.

Apparently I'm relevant.

All this talk of the third person mechanic is giving me nasty flashbacks. I don't want to be taken from first person at all while playing Halo. Armour Lock, Thrusters, Evade, all of them were jarring to look at -the only time should be in vehicles. If we have to have thrusters, just propel us in first person, like a fast moving strafe.

I really want sprint gone as well. All it does is add a button press for an animation that can exist without it. I hold the stick slightly forward, my Spartan walks slow, all the way, he appears to be sprinting - just adjust the movement speed so it's higher.

Maps haven't felt the right size since ODST Firefight maps, and it kills fluidity of movement through use of strafing.

I honestly think they broke the Spartans down to what they are at the core (in the fiction), and what abilities they have over normal soldiers, and are highlighting those in Halo 5.

*Cough* Dexterity, resupply, shielding, resistor, recharge and mobility. I so want an arena experience with this or no sprint (sans resistor & mobility). It sings to me about being an elite Spartan and really would amplify the traditional gameplay too.

The weapons management combined with mid engagement switching would be a little meta game in itself. The ability to quickly reload or switch would enable you to tackle multiple enemies for that solo beast mode. Finally shielding combined with recharge would speed up gameplay and movement while maximising the attack counter-attack that is so present in Halo firefights and map design e.g. awareness, feinting, baiting and cat & mouse tactics with radar.

As for the new stuff I like the idea of the heavy weight for ground pound or the hip and shoulder style melee in the trailer too. Again those sorts of Spartan base traits as you say are quite welcomed by me.

If an info / stat drop can double as a blog post, I'd count it as a megapost. Megaposts aren't inherently bad, it's just that I'm the Red Scare Communism to your Socialism in the word count department.

I actually enjoy having sprint in the game. I'm down for having the option to turn it off for different gametypes (more options=better) but of all the additions to the game I feel it's among the least "offensive" and doesn't really hurt the overall game.

It provides a trade off between a boost in speed and the ability to shoot momentarily. If they get rid of double beat downs then all the better. It also provides opportunities for unique map traversal. I do agree that the base movement speed needs to be increased as it is ridiculously slow and strafing still isn't viable enough with the way everything is set up. However I think it still has a place in the game.

I'm really looking forward to see what they do with Spartan abilities since they'll be a base trait everyone has. Begs the question though of whether it will all be context sensitive or just something you can activate whenever.

~Green's Musings Part One

Here are some images of the mysterious ship from CEA:

Alien_ship_1.png

Alien_ship_2.png

And the Sarcophagus that 343GS built around it after the distress beacon stopped. There were 7 flatlining monitors on-screen when this happened:

"My analysis shows that the mixture of gases coming from the ship matches the natural atmosphere of my Installation almost exactly. Perhaps the occupants, if they still live, were originally cataloged here."
... "But I do not understand why these sentients have not attempted to exit their vessel. Other than the leaking atmosphere, the only thing emanating from this wreckage is an automated distress call."
... "I am currently translating this automated broadcast. But with such a limited data-set, and no direct communication, I do not anticipate full comprehension. Given the short-range nature of this craft, it is likely that other vessels are nearby, but in accordance with procedure, I am blocking the distress call. No communication of the location of any Installation is permissible." -343GS, a mere ~60000 years after activation of the Halo Array.

We know that the Domain has been destroyed, so 343GS can't use that to find out what the broadcast says. He seems to believe that the ship is of a short-range nature, though he wouldn't be able to confirm it, and the existence of slipspace technology in the universe also has me skeptical of this conclusion. The broadcast repeated every 72.83 seconds. I'm still unsure of the relevancy of this (as was 343GS!).

"“But it is good to think our young will rise to another challenge, as brothers should, making trouble, finding strength.”-Riser, ancient-human character from Forerunner Trilogy.

Bornstellar felt this deeply, and even with his armour to protect him, the emotion was almost too much. “Hope,” was all he could say. Then they returned to the fish-ship and left the humans alone to find their way."-excerpt from Halo Rebirth, post Halo firing, Bornstellar/IsoDidact promised the rest of the surviving Forerunners would leave on an ACTUAL Great Journey, and never return to mettle in the affairs of the humans.

I highlight the fish-ship, as the human's description of some of the ships throughout the book is constantly relating it to fish. Interesting, anyway, as we are more familiar with the angular design of Forerunner architecture.

A guess? This could be some kind of a Forerunner ship. Or maybe the remnants of the humans that lived on the rings at some point. If so, what would they have had to say? It's hard to prove this, as you'd think 343 would be able to recognize it. And there's that strange language that we can't seem to relate to anything we've seen so far. (I'll discuss this again later, in a future post...there may be much more to this than meets the eye...)

Either way, since it is on Alpha Halo, this image from Halo Nightfall comes to mind for some reason:

"A strange and treacherous world exposes elite UNSC operatives to a much deeper danger."-from the Nightfall promotional material.
“A rising star in a futuristic army who is troubled by aspects of the military industrial complex he inhabits. Approaching combat situations with caution and logic, he inspires loyalty in his fellow Spartans” -from the Agent Locke/Marlowe casting reveal press material

I'll keep throwing down ideas. We know that Nightfall tells the origin story of Agent Locke in some manner. Why is the visual ID clearly of what I'm going to assume is a piece of the broken Alpha Halo? What could there possibly still be there that is so important that it is the titular image? I'm going to guess that Agent Locke and his team of ONI "Spartan Agents" visit here for some reason. Perhaps for this ship? I'm giddy at the thought. Perhaps he learns something here that causes him to question many things. And what about this much deeper danger? Does it have something to do with the Flood? Halo's were also vast research stations as well. Maybe... Or is it something else? I will come back to this later...

Another possibility: This promotional image is of a remnant piece of Installation 07, the last remaining of the original Halo Array, created by the Greater Ark (and "weaker" compared to the newer 6 Halos). These rings were 30 000km wide rather than the 10 000 of the 6 newer installations that were created by the newer Installation 00 - the Lesser Ark. After being severely damaged during one of the final battles of the Flood-Forerunner war, it shed many of it's parts (saved by IsoDidact and 343/Chakas as it passed around a planet), and reduced itself in size, becoming covered in perpetual clouds, forever hiding the atrocities committed by the Primordial, Mendicant Bias, and the Master Builder Faber (namely, crazy genocidal Flood experiments on native humans that lived on the Ring (Palace of Pain)... Food for though anyway. I still think it's the broken Alpha Halo.

To be continued...

Could be interesting if they retake that ship for further games, a new faction will be welcome or a ancient human faction retaking their ships after the covenant were defeated.

This is all well and good, but Sprint practically ruins all good Arena map designs for Halo. They are either too large and open to make up for the extra speed, or they are small and Sprint makes traversing them, and getting out of bad situations trivial. Higher base move speed and well designed maps with clever jumps, shortcuts, and God forbid bring back Teleporters to Halo and I feel that would be preferable to just giving people Sprint.

Like I have always said, Halo should go back to being the Medium paced Console Quake that it started out as, focus on powerups (timing and positioning), a balanced sandbox that isn't too bloated with repetitive weapons, and clever map design to facilitate interesting encounters and ebbs and flow in map control and movement.

Interesting you bring up the ship and Alpha Halo. I do think that Nightfall will revisit Installation 04, but unlike you I think it's Installation 04b. We don't know the timeframe, but we do know at some point ONI finds a way to reactivate the Ark portal/get there somehow, and that something went down, and they found what remained of 343GS. Perhaps Nightfall is telling this story.

Your idea is intriguing as well though :)

This time is over.

343 are caught between MS and old school fans. Halo is the flagship franchise. It has to do big members. The consoley quake isn't what thevmasses want anymore.

The MCC is very clever in that it will show what kinda numbers even the older games can attain now, player count wise.

Personally I don't mind if halo 5 dies change things up, if it doesn't work out, I'll still have the older games to play. Until they fix it or get it right next time.

Sometime I get this cynical feeling that they are pushing out the best version of the classic Halos just to prove that the player-counts will fall just as quickly.

Of course it's nonsense. But the mass-reaction to people playing the classics will be really, really interesting.

If I can peel myself away from the screen at launch, I'll be keeping my eye on the community at large.

Help us get to know you better. (Optional)
Examples of things to include:
- Any HaloGaffers you know in real life.

I don't know any =X

- Other Halo sites/forums you have been a member of.

I barely posted a little on waypoint/beyond as non of the discussions I was a part of seemed to go anywhere. I cant remember any other forums I was halo talking on besides those 2.

- Any other games you spend a lot of time playing.

Video Game Consoles I Own: Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii U. I also have a hyper powered laptop with a desktop GPU in it xD But strangely enough the only pc based game I play is Phantasy Star Online 2 sometimes.

Favorite Video Games: Halo Series, Golden Sun Series, Phantasy Star Universe, Phantasy Star Online 2, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Ninja Gaiden Series, Dead Or Alive Series, Mario Series, Street Fighter Series, Zelda Series, Gears Of War Series, Final Fantasy Series, Dragon Ball Sparking Series, Almost Every Sonic Game, Dead Rising Series, Mario Kart Series, Super Smash Bros Series, Mirrors Edge, Metal Gear Solid Series, Kirby Series, Donkey Kong Series, Handheld Pokemon Series, Bayonetta, Anarchy Reigns, Vanquish, Yoshi Series, Titanfall.

As of right now Im only really playing halo, mario kart 8, occasional Phantasy Star Online 2 & making people paranoid through invasions in watch dogs on xbox one :3

- Personal bio stuff. (occupation/hobbies/etc.)

I really enjoy dancing, spending time and having fun with my friends on and offline, studying, swimming, DDR, sushi and other things. Currently, I express my love of dancing/fashion/makeup on youtube, and at anime conventions ! Its a side thing of fun as my career is fashion / cosmetology so it ties in very well! Random but my favorite dinner is Nabe Yaki Udon!

Uncontrollably hyped for the MCC & the Halo 5 beta =) I am also very excited for the return of Phantom Dust, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War & Mirrors Edge. New franchises I am looking forward too: Sunset Overdrive, Devils Third, DragonBall Xenoverse & Destiny.

I enjoy Anime as well. Here are some of my faves: Dragon Ball Series, Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass, Code Geass R2, Clannad, Durarara!!, Tenjou Tenge, K-On!, D Gray man, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, Lucky Star, Ghost In The Shell Series, Ikki Tousen, Bleach, Kekkaishi, Deathnote, Big O, Dragon Ball Z Series, Kiddy Grade, Kiddy Girl AND, Excel Saga, Detective Conan, Black Lagoon, Attack On Titan, FLCL, Space Dandy, Sword Art Online, Inuyasha, Elfen Lied,
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Kuroko no Basuke, Kyoukai no Kanata, Freezing, Noragami, Guilty Crown, k, Free!, Shingeki no Kyojin, Carneval, Fruits Basket & Pokemon ( ^ o ^ )

Sorry this was long and most gaffers might not read it DX.

So with MCC dedis, 1080p, 60fps for online Halo 1-4 are you going to be more open to change with Halo 5 mechanics or map design?

Do you want an additional big scale large player count Halo mode? Personally I see something like this a total given for Halo 5, considering dedis or coop or up-scaled BTB.

Good to see this thread return. Will they show a flashback of the Escalation scene in Halo 5? Or will the MC just appear with a cracked visor somehow ingame?

  • Give the ability to turn off Sprint for customs as well as certain gametypes
  • Design a few maps around a gameplay style akin to the original Halo arena multiplayer
  • Increase base movement speed across the board
If this was done I feel it would really help to alleviate a lot of problems. Clever map design that is not only fun to play on but also rewards those that really know how to take advantage of what it has to offer is a major part of making Halo 5 work (though I'd think that's obvious). Regardless of if you can sprint or not, I feel this applies universally. Maps designed around sprint I feel don't have to be any less fun or interesting to play on than an arena map.

Naturally the dedicated arena maps should NOT just be a bunch of forge maps. Figured I'd put that out there.

I think we will get along nicely.

Basically this. Sprint isn't technically problematic as a gameplay mechanic, but due to its implementation it has the residual effect of altering how the game designers build maps. Halo 4's maps all either felt too small or too big, there was never that Pit/Guardian/Lockout sweet spot. Perhaps Exile was about right, and Haven felt ok, if a little small. Those two were about it though.

oh my god, to think of the amazing possibilities that can spring from this, first off with it being as Fuchsdh said, which is installation 04b, to think of it from a film stand point, wouldn't it be amazing for Locke to walk into a dark room, save for one small blinking red and blue light, it hovers above him staggering and says, "Oh, hello!" as we all remember 343GS saying. GOD that would be amazing.

So what is all your opinions on the Halo 4 armor returning for Halo 5, from the looks of the Beta trailer.

I'm slightly disappointed. If the crazy designs are returning, I at least hope the skins are more detailed and grittier, and actually look like proper Spartan Plating, rather then plastic. Same thing goes for the visors. Everything about Halo 4 Spartans looks like they're plastic, with faded colors for their skin.

Make the armor look like metal, and the visors look like glass like previous games. Please.

Or you could probably please most people if Spartans looked like what Masterchief did in cutscenes

Chief's new armor is actually something I was really happy with.

I'm just hoping they bring back more of the simplistic designs. A lot
95%
of the armor in Halo 4 felt either needlessly convoluted or just downright silly without much to separate it from the rest. I just remember most of it as a bunch angles and lines.

I do hope sad face helmet returns though. This time with anime tears.

Didnt Spartans IV are silver color but we got blue ones on spartan ops and later one custom colors in the comics?

And I remember S-II were green

No other game will exist from Nov 11, 2014 to Feb 24, 2015(Witcher3) besides the MC Collection. Halo will be on all day ever day no sleep, mountain dew. im so hyped

I would hope they nixed like 90% of the Halo 4 armor designs. Some of them were just ridiculous. Small holes, weird angles etc.

Though as long as they keep giving Classic MK V and MK VI as choices, I'm happy

but who could deny this

On the armor topic, I'm not that much a fan of Locke's armor (mostly his helmet). It looks really cool and all, but it seems like it's supposed have that "badass" look to it and makes it seem a little cheesy. Like they said, "Here's a new character who's supposed to be the foil to the Master Chief, so we have to make him a badass to make sure people understand he's on Chief's level."

Not a big issue though and I'm sure I'll get used to it, just got reminded of it with the armor discussion.

Still annoyed that they made us pay for MK V in Halo 4. I mean, I did it. But still. Shitty thing to do, IMO.

Here's a random thought. How many people would like to have the Halo 3 Beta versions of Valhalla, Snowbound, and High Ground in the MCC?

This would also include the weapons. So Beta Carbine, Beta Tripmine, etc.

The issue with this is this more than likely requires porting the Halo 3 Beta itself for the engine hooks to accomodate what the map data is looking for. So you're porting Halo 3 twice (essentially) for 3 whole maps. A hard sell at any rate.

I never played the Halo 3 Beta, is there is a list of differences anywhere?

After a quick search for the beta tripmine, I found this video and I thought it was pretty funny. link
