Happy 20th anniversary Chrono Trigger!

Also:

1000AD > 600AD > 12,000BC (pre-crash) >>> 2300AD >>> 12,000BC (post-crash) >>>> 65,000,000BC >>>> 1999AD

The first three are pretty close and all great for their own reasons. I absolutely love everything about all of them.
2300AD I'm not a fan of futuristic settings, and so is a definite step lower, but is still very good.
12,000BC post-crash is good (except the Blackbird stuff, which kind of sucks >.>), but just makes me miss the pre-crash stage.
Not really a fan of prehistoric settings. 65,000,000BC's still good, just definitely at the bottom.
And 1999AD... Well, you know... >.>

Also, Lucca makes a cameo in Xenogears as well.

Yes, this is reason enough for you to play that game.
Please play Xenogears...
Mitsuda composed for it!

Xenogears always felt more like a followup to Chrono Trigger to me than Chrono Cross. The music and the world of Xenogears just felt so much more connected Trigger.

The project that became Xenogears actually started out as "Chrono Trigger 2":

An old promo reel of Square's from mid-1996 contained footage of a "Chrono Trigger 2"; while much of that technologies appear to have gone into Xenogears, it's clear that Square has kept the franchise in mind.

I'd kill to see the content of that promo reel :(
(Well I wouldn't *literally* kill, I guess, but still...)

Chrono Trigger is one of my all time favorite games such that I make an opportunity to play it every year. For me, my favorite part of the game is its infectious optimism that involves not only the game's story and characters but also its music. From the moment Marle says screw destiny in 2300 AD with Chrono's theme playing to
saving Chrono from his heroic sacrifice
. I truly felt invested to fight the planet's bad future.

There is so much that I love of about this game. Each era looks and sounds distinct. 23000BC feels like a floating, magical utopia separated from the bleak ice age below, and 600AD has the same mysterious quality of medieval legends. Toriyama's designs are among his best as each character could be from his previous work while also representing the charm of this game and their respective era.

I could just gush about this game forever <3

For me:

12,000 B.C. >>> 600 A.D. > 2300 A.D. >> 1000 A.D. >>>>> 65,000,000 B.C. >>> 1999 A.D.

12,000 B.C. blew my mind because of how exquisite Zeal was and how I obsessed I became with it and Schala afterwards. Everything was so rich and just incredibly magical; it was beyond what you came to expect from the rest of the game.

600 A.D. had the best character arcs with Glenn and Cyrus, and it also had my favourite version of Guardia. It also had Ozzie, and the sidequest later in the game with him was among my favourites.

2300 A.D. was one of the few parts where the game felt grindy to me, but Johnny and Robo saved a big part of it.

1000 A.D. is near the bottom of my list, but it probably has my favourite event in the game where the gang gets together at the bonfire and discuss their purpose and the Entity. This entire video highlights my favourite part of the game.

65,000,000 B.C. just felt lifeless and was also another era that felt grindy to me. Azala and the Black Tyranno battle and Lavos was interesting. I'm just glad it led to Zeal.

Can't say much about 1999 A.D.

Xenogears always felt more like a followup to Chrono Trigger to me than Chrono Cross. The music and the world of Xenogears just felt so much more connected Trigger.

I like them both, but Xenogears bit off more than it could chew with budget allocation issues with FFVIII.

I appreciate both Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger for what they were. I didn't expect Chrono Trigger 2 playing CC, and it actually turned out to be my favourite game among the two.

For those that love Chrono Trigger, but for some reason have never seen it...

https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Chrono_Trigger_Prerelease.html

This is a complete dissection of the Chrono Trigger preview game that was sent to store fronts in Japan to show off the game ahead of release. It has a TON of differences including an early cut dungeon (Singing Mountains) which makes use of the cut song of the same name as well as lots of other really interesting things (Epoch's hovering mode, sprite differences, removed enemies, etc).

I think most people would agree that 600 AD and Zeal are the best time periods. I probably like 2300 the least.

Surely most of the people in this thread played it? Err, or at least the people who played it in the 90s.

I don't know how you could play CT, love it, and then not become an ardent follower of Square from then on. That would be a big mistake since they had quite a few gems to release post-CT.

Not sure I would say that these days, though.

Yeah, Zeal just stands out so starkly from the rest of the game. Essentially no enemies. Incredibly mysterious. So much going on. So many people to talk with. So much to see. So much to discover.

And then the ephemeral nature of it... Where, just as you've finally gotten to know it...
It's gone forever.

Because Square died to me with Final Fantasy 7.
But that's a discussion for another topic :Ăľ

I no longer own a physical version of CT

I owned the SNES version but actually sold it about 8 years ago.

Maybe I should get the DS version since it's only 22.99

I mean, I've already played through the DS version and finished it once but I don't own my own copy. o.o

I feel like I need it on the shelf

Xenogears is my favorite RPG right up there with Chrono Cross. Hard to make a choice between those two. Must have beaten each of them 4 or 5 times. There's a couple other cameos to other games too--there's a picture of Tifa in one of the houses in Solaris. But the backstory in Xenogears is incredible. Spent hours reading through Perfect Works which makes playing Xenogears again a lot more enjoyable

Sadly this... But hey, we can dream I guess...

Maybe they'll stealthy launch the game on Steam with their custom SNES emu/shell as a precursor to launching all of their SNES classics on it eventually.... hahah... oh I'm sad now.

Did anyone else fill out the "tell Square Enix what game to make next" survey? I Chrono'd the heck out of it... lol

My money is on they will do absolutely nothing.

Pretty much. Hashimoto (VP at Square) once said that Chrono Trigger doesn't sell, and that's pretty much why they ignore the franchise.

"Why does everyone ask about Chrono Trigger?" he laughed. We told him it's a very loved series. "That's not what the sales tell me!" he responded.

"If people want a sequel, they should buy more!"

I believe this was after the DS port, which they put a lot of time, care and marketing into -- yet seemingly didn't meet expectations.

I did my part - I bought 4 copies of it!
(One for myself, one for my sister, one for a friend, and one for the GAF SS)

I bought a couple too, as well as the godawful iOS/Android ports.

DS version is still the best, definitive version for me. I remember the GAF thread when the Famitsu news leaked that it was coming. Incredible.

Yea.... he is absolutely out of his gourd... people don't want a port... they don't want another port 6 years after the first port... We want an upgrade, a remaster, or hell even a sequel....(provided they don't ruin it)

800,000 copies is pretty good for the third release of a game that was 14 years old at the time. Despite what Hashimoto said, Yoshinori Kitase later said that he (Kitase) was impressed with the sales of CTDS.

Mitsuda claims that the lack of a new Chrono game is because "there are a lot of politics involved".

Sakaguchi claims that he wanted to turn Chrono into a big franchise but the management didn't:

"We wanted to continue it as a series," Sakaguchi said. "... But — and I think the statute of limitations has passed and expired so I think I'm okay saying this — but we just didn't see eye-to-eye with management, and so I went and fought for it, and I officially lost the battle."

Yuji Horii claims not to care about Chrono at all because whatever he could do in Chrono he can do in Dragon Quest anyway.

Illusion of Gaia outsold CT on the SNES?

What in the literal hell?

Yuji Horii claims not to care about Chrono at all because whatever he could do in Chrono he can do in Dragon Quest anyway.

The most important pieces of the puzzle to me are Misato Kato on writing (he handled all of the 12,000 BC in the original and the story in CC and the story additions in CTDS) and Mitsuda on music. Give me those 2 things, and I'll be happy with any Chrono sequel.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng this game is sososososososoososososososososo good. I can replay it every year and never get bored. So well paced, story so good, side quests so rewarding. Heck, i'd even argue all of the characters are fun to play with, too. There's no 'best' team, which is fantastic. I'd also argue it stands the test of time, too.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngh.

Unlike CT, Illusion of Gaia was released in Europe, complete with a big strategy book similar to the one Secret of Mana also had over there.

That chart was US only, so the Europe excuse for sales sub-Illusion of Gaia don't play... I can see it not beating the sales of FF3/6 at the time... but it blows my mind the game lost to IoG... IoG isn't a bad game by any stretch... but damn.

I only played the DS version of the game (don't think it came out in Europe before?) but it still turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time.

How about a 3D remake similar to FF III and IV? No voice acting and keep the same music. I'd buy it twice.

Wow!! Those years went quick!! Vividly remember coming back from a holiday to find my import CT sitting with the other post, stuck it into the Datel Action Replay, Mario World in the back (that one always seemed to work) and proceeded to enjoy one of my most fondly remembered gaming experiences. Cheers OP for the reminder.

FF: Mystic Quest almost sold as much as CT. How is that possible?

Almost everyone I know who likes RPGs has played Chrono Trigger. Most people I bring up FF Mystic Quest to have never heard of it.

I wish I was one of those lucky people.

Only thing I can think to justify those sales are the fact that CT came near the end of the SNES life cycle and was relatively expensive (using a 32mbit cart where as most games were on a 16mbit or smaller one).

Hard to imagine today that such a massive and beautiful RPG is literally only 4MB in total size.

Wow that sales chart made me do a triple take. Not that CT numbers are so low compared to sales now, but that Kingdom Hearts is the highest seller. Never knew all that.

If you don't mind me asking, where'd you pick it up? I'm looking for unopened/mint CT's, have seen a few in great condition in Japan but still searching.

Last time I checked a new SNES CT was about 2,000 dollars, but now I see things like this
:O

So pricey...
I bought the Super Famicom version; there are mint conditions aplenty on eBay. I lucked out with one that looked barely touched for around $40. The Super Nintendo version...now that's expensive. My white whale.

If sales were really as low as that chart on this page suggest for the SNES version... it's a little less surprising about it's price now. Luckily I still have my copy safe and sound.

Time flies. Fantastic game. One of the few I can point back to and say 10/10 with no reservations.

Also, this thread's made me super nostalgic for NP's Epic Center. So good.

That sales chart is wild. Didn't expect some of the lower numbers. FF X/X-2 HD doing so poorly....sub-300k on the PS3? That doesn't bode well for FFXII HD...

Aw man, you made that Frog art? I remember seeing it a good while ago. It's awesome! Only fitting for such an awesome character though.

Thanks man! Its funny but I never liked the added cinematics. I thought the way the game handled it was already spot on.
