(Hardware) Official April NPD Prediction Thread - closes Friday May 9

714,000 for the Wii in April? Holy shit. :lol

If there was any small glimpse of hope for a PS3/360 comeback, it is over.

Perhaps the Wii can pass the 360 by the end of June in the USA. Wow. Bu bu bu first to 10 million isn't going to help MS here.

Doesn't matter though. First to ten million won.

Pachter says this month.

Analysts Unmoved By 360's 10 mln US Milestone

Michael Pachter with Wedbush Morgan Securities simply called Microsoft's announcement "spin," adding, "Nintendo will pass them this month."

Didn't Reggie commit to 1m...or was that just for the launch day....?

Yes that's what I want to know too. but I think they wouldn't have spent $40 million just for 1 million copies

Judging from the tone of their latest PR, they're playing the "Wii doesn't compete against us" card.

Does it really matter when third parties are still putting their best efforts on the PS3/360 side?

What the heck, really. Wii 700k again in a 4 week month? Shit. Crazy beyond every possible estimation.

And the INCREDIBLE thing is that the quality of Third Party games on Wii is inversely proportional to the selling rate of the console.

What the... why did I see so many folks still making predictions so long after the PR was released?

There are, of course, two ways to interpet "the Wii doesn't compete with us"...

Both Sony and Microsoft have been doing that. They have just decided to ignore the asswhupping that they are recieving. Hell, I'd be inclined to do the same damn thing. :lol

tout a fait. I don't understand that too.

Probably not, for 360/PS3 owners! But for those who don't own one, a larger Wii userbase means more games means a greater chance (however slight) that one of them will be good. So it's good news for Wii owners!

It will to those 3rd parties sooner or later.

I was hoping we wouldn't see this, but we are looking at dominance not even seen by Sony.

And judging by this increase in production, we are going to see very large records set by Nintendo at the close of this generation.

It'll change. For better or for worse, there's no way third-parties are going to pass up on the phenomenon that is Wii. And for all we know, it may already be happening. Unlike the other two console makers, Nintendo and the developers on their platform have always been tight-lipped. Third parties have shown much promise on WiiWare, perhaps we might see a similar trend starting to develop on Wii retail.

How well do you remember last generation? 'Cause from what I remember it was something like PS2 = 3 x (Xbox + GCN). Maybe 2.5.

And when was the last time Pachter was spot on something? I'm sure even the oldest GAFfers don't remember that day.
Give the man some credit, I mean hey, if you give a blind man a Banjo and a Cow, he'll hit the bugger sometime.

Mario Kart Wii > GTAIV PS3. Yikes.
why are people making a big deal out of this? mario kart isnt some niche franchise;its just as big as gta4 coupled with wii's bigger userbase its a given that it will outsell the ps3 version of gta4.

What ?

Because people were saying that GTA will sell truckloads and that its a franchise close the playstation brand ?

Except on handhelds, MK isn't even close to as big as GTA.

Wii is doing numbers bigger than PS2's now. THe only thing that will slow it down is Wii 2/HD.

I can't even think of when Wii might finish behind a home console according to NPD. It'll be when another console is released so....Nov 2011? 2012?

Think about past history

i wonder which version of GTA4 sold more..
I would be very suprised of the PS3 version sold more than the Xbox 360 version considering that the Xbox 360 installbase is leading with somewhat 6 millions over the PS3, atleast i think its around 6 millions or something, can someone verify this?

Publishers won't move away from 360/PS3, but I can see adding a Wii sku to existing games. They would be stupid to pass the system the way the thing is just demolishing the competition.

I actually expect something similar, though the other two will be higher then last gens 2nd and 3rd place consoles, and the industry overall much higher then the generation before it.

Not in single months.
The difference was just as big, though, if not bigger, and both the PS3 and the 360 are doing better than at least one of the non-PS2 consoles in an equivalent timespan. Except maybe in Japan.

I don't think so. Maybe Nintendo considered GTAIV X360 and PS3 as combined.

It's not a Nintendo comments. It's Nintendo Highlights from NPD press release. I don't think NPD will count GTA IV X6360 and PS3 as combined

Wii actually has always outsold ps2 at the same points in both consoles' lifecycles. But what Wii is doing now is just ridiculous.

Yes, that sounds about right. 360 software sales are enough to keep hi def games in development, but there also comes a point where publishers cannot ignore the massive install base and healthy sales in all regions.

It's tough though because just adding a SKU has never worked for sales. Need For Speed, etc. They really have to buckle down and figure out how to develop great Wii titles that will sell.

wii just ensures ps2 developement from 3rd parties pretty much. money that they dont make on wii can be made porting the games to ps2. bah. this gen sucks ass nextgen saleswise.

Didn't N'Gai's blog post suggest it was about 65/35 360, but gta helped the ps3 platform more?

I'm just looking forward to tomorrow's 1up Yours npd discussion. should be pretty good.
