• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Have you found your "This Is Next Gen" game yet?

Out of everything I've played, it would have to be Ryse. Blown away by everything. There have been some nice games but nothing spectacular. Still waiting. I think Uncharted will be very very nice and hopefully after that we start to see some hellacious games.

Really not an hyperbole, it might be less noticeable in darker conditions but in a sunny race the aliasing is a lot more prunounced than in photomode

The diferences are minimal, and you will only notice when stopped. As I said above, when driving the motion blur will hide any diferences in aliasing and you will have an even more impressive graphical experince ingame than you have with the static photomode shots.

When in motion you can't see these diferences.

For me it's killzone shadowfall. I'm still playing the multiplayer in this game and it blows me away. Turning the valve in stormgract and watching the water rush in looks so cool.

Driveclub's in-game AA is actually very good. I'm not sure how it looks on other people's TV's, I've heard different reports, but on my 55" I can get pretty close to the screen and not see much aliasing even when the car is at standstill. Worst aliasing in the game is on the cars depending on where there are lighting highlights on body panels.

Shadow of Mordor. Not graphically obviously, but the Nemesis system is a new idea that isn't possible on old systems since the last gen versions don't even have it.

P.T. looks shockingly real, especially the first time you enter the hallway, but I chose this screenshot because what I remember the most is Lisa the Ghost.

I don't think I've found mine yet. These days, breakthroughs in gameplay are few and far between and the major reason for getting a new console is the graphics. So Drive Club would probably be closest IMO, with No Man's Sky probably being the one when it arrives and if it's good.

Pretty sure it's gonna be The Order for me. So far most of my WOW moments have come from the Wii U of all places. This gen will be the worst gen.

Yeah!! Of all places the Wii U has provided the best gameplay moments. Playing in bed while the TV is on is also great. more time to play!! CoD BOs 2 on the gamepad for short sessions is great too.

ZombiU: best use of the gamepad resulting in really cool immersion
Lego City Undercover: open world lego game with great humour and a great story. Also uses the gamepad.
Pikmin 3: best strategy gameplay on consoles, cute Pikmin!
SM3DW: best feel good game of the gen, it had me smiling the whole game.
DKC TF: pure platforming fun, tight levels, great music and challenging!
TW101: best action game, the action never stops, it stays at 100 the whole game.
MK8: best graphics on the Wii U and with its limitations IMHO competes graphically with the other consoles, runs smooth!!

TLOUR: great performance and remaster, the game is amazing but it is from last gen.
Wolfenstein: also great game but it is a cross gen game.
Metro 2033 redux: also on last gen but runs and looks amazing!
Fifa 15: also on last gen, runs good and looks very sharp but nothing mindblowing.

I mean, all these PS4 games deliver, but none are WTF moment.

I'd have to go with Shadow of Mordor for the nemesis system, though it needs a lot of work.

And Pt for graphics, I genuinely could not shut the fuck up about how real it looked when I was playing it with my buddy

Glad people have mentioned PT. To me it showcased just the extra level of detail that starts taking us towards photorealism. As much as it's just a corridor it looks real, the lighting and solidity of it is a cut above anything else I've seen in terms of recreating just a hum drum environment like this. If the aliasing was fixed it would look 99% real.

And then we have Driveclub, particularly with the weather. The dynamic lighting is just perfect, it truly captures the hues and the right atmosphere of an early morning or sunset, and the subtle light changes as clouds pass overhead etc. It is sublime. Also, while 30fps isn't perfect it is a SOLID 30fps which negates many of the negatives of the typical racing game with dodgy 30fps or less performance. Combined with highly effective motion blur it makes the game still very playable at ridiculous speeds. Still, when I imagine that PS5 should easily push graphics like that in a high resolution VR mode.. I slightly wet myself a little. Few years away yet, but my god, we're nearly there (and yeah yeah with a costly PC you're maybe close already :p)

Infamous: Second Son - Visuals. First game I played where I was convinced it couldn't look that good last gen.

Shadow of Mordor - Gameplay. Not that I don't think the Nemesis system couldn't be done on last gen hardware, but I think it's pretty clear every open-world action game going forward is going to ape this system.

For me, it was Infamous. Was just mind blowing visually. Especially since I'd just played GTA5.

I mean, GTA5 still looked prettier in some ways, but you could just tell the polygon count, and stuff like the cloth physics on his jacket and ridiculous reflections. It was just gorgeous.

Nope.

Some games are trying a lot harder than others, but for the most part everything just looks like a cleaned up version of last gen. Playing everything at 60FPS on PC is a nice change for me, but people were doing that last gen.

No Gears of War moment yet though.

Assasins creed definitely. Partly because you can directly compare it to previous games, but it's really beautiful in its own right.

Shadow Of Mordor, nemesis/sauron's army system and all the stuff that goes with it. I don't really care if it would have been possible on previous systems, for me it's really a new page of the book, and I actually HOPE a lot of devs will try to salvage and adapt (or "ripoff" if you like being angry) some parts of it in their upcoming games.

Edit : Also, Sunset Overdrive, of course.

My first "next gen" game was KZ and then Forza 5. I was absolutely disappointed with both. It wasn't until I played Ryse that I got the "nextgen" feels.

Yes, at launch.

Graphics: You can say what you want about the actual game. But Killzone Shadow Fall looked amazing. It was a launch title and already looked notoriously better than anything on last gen consoles

Gameplay: Battlefield 4, well, once it actually worked. 64 players has been standard on PC for a while but it felt like a massive change for someone like me who had only played the franchise on consoles.
Yeah, yeah Resistance 2 also had 60 players and MAG had over a 100. But not with the scale, graphics, performance and destructible environments of BF4

Mordors Nemesis system shows a ton of promise and there's a lot of room for growth and improvement, not perfect but man this could make for some amazing games in the future. Hands down best part of that game. (really like the game though the rest of it is standard)

Driveclub has some insane graphics, but The Order could be the most amazing thing to look at. We'll see.

Without a doubt P.T. is the game that made me feel like I arrived. The first piece of entertainment media to actually scare me since Paranormal Activity 1. In the dark with headphones destroyed me....in a good way.

PS4 exclusives have been killin it so far. Killzone blew me away, i cant believe how cohesive the artstyle is for a lauch game. Then infamous for an open world game is jaw dropping. Finally you have driveclub with its lighting and weather effects which shit on the competition from great heights. It picks up next year too right off the bat with The Order and finishes strong with uncharted.

Multiplat wise AC Unity is jaw dropping. I love this gen already, we completely avoided the awkward transition in graphics like previous gens. I also love how devs are rendering everything on screen now and way more types of materials. Games arent riddled with metal railings and warehouses anymore.
