Havok 4.5 Announced. Fully Optimized for "Next-Gen" Consoles.

The trademark is PLAYSTATION in caps, they can't get around this in official press releases.

I thought he was referring to ppl like Borys who type PLAYSTATION 3 in caps on the forum here instead of just using PS3 like everyone else.

I don't think anyone in the topic typed PLAYSTATION 3, it's only copy/paste from the PR.

If you can prove anything about them, PM a mod. ;)

Well, PLAYSTATION 3 is the correct name, just as SIXAXIS is.

I really, really hate the trend of using capital letters to make products more apparent.

Edit: too late.

I don't wanna make a beef about it, that's just how I interpreted what he said. Borys could have just used PS3 in the thread title when he was ignoring the other consoles, instead he had to make it painfully obvious what he was up to.

Old Havok (4.0) = sucked on PS3

I know there's plenty who'd like to think the PS3 improvement in 4.5 is just PS3 'catching up', but Havok 4.0 on PS3 gave performance greater than '3 PC cores' (using the PPU and 4 SPEs) in a benchmark Havok presented last August. So it was by no means a slouch, it's just got an awful lot better.

I actually talked a little about Havok's gushing over Cell in that "what the cell?" thread some time ago..they did a presentation here in Dublin at an IBM conference on Cell and they enthused over it, but warned that it would require code to be re-architected pretty much from scratch rather than ported. They said they were just getting started, and expected big improvements over the next couple of years, so maybe this is the first such fruits of that work.

edit - here's the Havok 4.0 performance comparison:

Good news, a engine to harness the "full power" of the ps3.
Lets see how good the games will turn out to be with Havok 4.5
I'm interested to see what White Engine produces too.

Well, if GAF posters are going to adhere to Sony PR guidelines, they should by typing "Sony PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system" in all their posts.

If you're going to be a corporate shill, at least do it properly.

I don't mean to single out Borys, there's a handful of other guys who do it all the time as well.

NO BORYS NOOOOOOO

Borys your like dust in the wind...DUST IN THE WIIIIIND BORYS IS DUST IN THE WINNDDDD

Chorus: *Borys is dust in the Winnnnnnnd*

It was just idle speculation, not an accusation of actual suckage.

For sure..although some seemed to be rather certain in their speculation. But it's always good to address speculation with information if it's available..particularly if that speculation is apparently (very) off base. It was a theme that was beginning to run through the thread, so I thought it worth picking up on, particularly because when put in that context the performance boost with 4.5 is actually quite impressive/surprising.

What was the thread title before the change? Something with 'optimised for PS3 only' or something? I feel like I missed something. :(

edit: oh, he was banned
again
? now I'm even more curious. :D

Aw man, I missed the party. :lol

Anywho, I wonder how easy it will be to apply to 4.0 games already in the works, and exactly what kind of gains those titles would see.

*stares at Stranglehold, and Mass Effect, amonst others*

Could somebody ever try to properly benchmark PS3 and 360 with this new release?

Those would be the interesting facts to talk about. :)

Havok 4.0 was running couple ms faster on Cell, than on three core PC CPU. So 5 to 10 times makes it wooohooo awesome. PS3 showing the power.

Great, maybe now developers will actually use physics in ways that actually effect gameplay instead of putting it on basketball jerseys and boxes.

Nobody's interested in facts or they would have realized there's no 3 core CPU in the PC market. :lol

Indeed..makes you wonder if it's a PC CPU at all. There's only one triple-core CPU I know of..ahem.

(Although it's possible they were using an emulator..I guess)

Maybe they were talking about quadro core CPU? I don't remember exactly. Seems weird for them to use nonexistant CPU and benchmark it. I won't speculate on the other option, it belongs in some system wars forums.

Well there aren't Cell's with just 4 SPEs on the market either ;)

Perhaps the demonstration they gave was a best case scenario, and given that it was a running test, it's likely that some CPU resources would have been needed for other parts of the demonstration code. 3 Cores is still vague though, as it may have been 3 out of 4 physical processors or 3 out of 4 logical (hyperthreaded, etc) processors.

Perhaps, if they were about in Aug 06. It's possible they ran it across 3 out of 4 cores there, hadn't thought of that.

Any info on Xenon's 6PPU threads?

I like to think that Microsoft is for some reason restricting benchmarks on X360. They pimp all around the web, but when it comes to some hard data, they show nothing.

Zip. You certainly wouldn't expect it from Havok in a comparison with PS3 since it's not politically correct for middleware vendors to publically compare their clients' systems. PC is open territory so they can compare against that.

Now if Havok ever showed a comparison between Xenon and that same 3-core PC CPU, you might be able to draw a comparison indirectly between all 3 platforms. But they've never openly discussed Xenon or Xenon performance AFAIK.
