Haze Official Thread, JCBossman Memorial and Skittles Appreciation. BOOSH!

Why are people so trying to justify their PS3 purchase without merit? If the system has no games than just admit it and move on. I own a PS3 and admittedly many of the games are crap, and the Wii arguably has a better line-up. Get over it people and quit trying to make every new PS3 game that comes out "TEH MEGATON"!

There's nothing wrong with selling your PS3 in favor of a 360 or a Wii, because Sony's latest system will NEVER live up to the PS2 or even the PS1 in the software department. The PS3 will end up as the GameCube of the current generation, whether you guys like it or not. Geez!

What's your PSN ID?

Well, I caved and bought it. I had the hankering for an FPS plus I honestly wanted to get to hear the rest of Haze's hilarious writing and voice acting. So far, I haven't been let down.

BOOSH!

Here are some of my thoughts after playing a-lot of the single player.

If you are going to play the game make sure you turn on the Co Op story mode, it seems to be effortless to use so DO IT NOW! So far I have played with it on the entire time, and people can just jump it at any time, with that said I have had no issues with the games friendly AI; I can not say how much this feature rocks! The story was awful for me until I left Mantel, I think Free Radical did a good job of making the player dislike Mantel, Mantel soldiers, and Nector.

This game is not for the graphics whore's, this game is not for Gamers looking for the next AAA shooter, this game oozes average at best, and questionable at worst. You will find the weapons to be your standard affair, you have a riffle, pistol, shot-gun, Heavy Machine gun, Rockets, flame thrower, sniper rifle, grades, and they are not very unique or memorable weapons to use, but they get the job done and sound unique. The game also has some interesting gimmicks especially on the rebel side, these special attacks are not forced and it is up to the players to use these tricks against the AI (Nector bomb/Mine, play dead, Nector knife). Oh did mention you can invite people and see who is online in the game? All games need to have these basic PSN functions and its a god send!

The controls are tight and responsive, I did not have to change the default sensitivity, and I have to do that in most games, I did however turn off auto aim as it seems to affect the accuracy of my shots. With that said vehicular controls are OK, but could have been better; I can control them with ease (Looking at you HalfLife), but the levels I have used them in with one notable exception "The beach Level" have been frustrating because of there design!

All in all the game is just good, it has some frustrating level design, a very small amount of texture flickering (I have only seen this in the Mantel ships on the video screens), but rock solid frame rate and smooth level transitions.

Its a flawed and very average FPS, which counters simplistic friendly AI with well implemented four player jump/out Co-Op.

The story is kind of blunt and occasionally silly with contrived dialog, but I reckon it's better than what you usually get. Which can generally be summed up with something like; "Aliens! Kill them!" Haze certainly deals with a more interesting subject matter. It does work, mostly.

At first you get the impression the Mantel soldiers are just obnoxious, juvenile jock assholes (which would be the blunt silliness, the game frequently reminds you that these people are assholes with silly meat-headed dialog), but still somewhat normal. After a while you begin to wonder what the hell is wrong with them. After another while you begin to wonder what the fuck is wrong with them?! They're not likeable to begin with, but you grow increasingly repulsed by them,
until the unforseen twist!

The story kind of takes the backseat for a while after that.
"We're the good guys! They're the bad guys!", basically. But after a while you get to know that perhaps Merino isn't all good (which would be the blunt, contrived dialog) and that the Mantel troops aren't really evil sonsofbitchassholes.

And I actually grew to empathize with a character
(Peshy)
and didn't want to
shoot the confused, defenseless Mantel troops on the land carrier. I didn't see these people as "animals" or "meat", I saw them as human beings who had been deceived and abused by the company they were employed by. And my squad just mauled them down. :(
, so I think the script did something right. I mean I can see why some people might find it hard to take seriously, but I managed to.

The rest of the game isn't all bad either. Granted there is a lot of bad, AI, bugs and vehicles in particular, but the core shooting mechanics and controls feel great, and the AI...the enemy AI mostly appears to be fairly mobile and dynamic. So it can be moderately entertaining to play, even if it all is rather standard.

The "Don't die" button is neat though, it's like the flashback feature in GRID. Saves you a 15 second checkpoint load and makes you able to shoot people in back. But sometimes it gives you an unpleasant view of AI vs AI combat...

The objective-based multiplayer mode is pretty cool too. I'm usually not much for multiplayer though, except for Battlefield, that shit is da bomb. Anyway, like Giant Bomb was saying, the playing dead mechanic seems kind of weird in multiplayer. I almost feel like I'm cheating when using it.

Same, just picked it up. While the voice acting isn't the greatest it doesn't bother me so much. Some of the serious themes are still there amongst some of the jokes.
Graphics, kind of puzzling how some of it seems a bit "last gen". But I can live with it.

So far so good.

I'm about to continue my session from last night, any one care to join? I am also not skipping the cut scenes, I think I'm on the ship after the beach.

Glad to see others who have actually picked this up and realize its not the shitcan of a game that everyone says it is. Turning Point, now thats a game that was fundementally flawed in so many ways and had major issues. Haze is getting the review score and treatment that game should have got and more. Just Turning Point was never hyped to begin with so its like "Dust in the wind...dude"

Back to Haze, I'm still having alot of fun with it but I've been playing on hard and man I keep dying. Also I hate flamethrower enemies. GRRRRRRR

How do you enable it then? Or should it be on automatically? I'm playing the PAL version so I hope it's not been removed from the European version...I'll be really pissed off if that has happened

Sorry I'm late but rumble is automatically enabled. It wasn't in the demo, but it's in the retail. It even has the DS3 logo on the front of the cover.

I actually think the effect is quite good. It's stylized I suppose. I might just be bad, but it looks pretty effective and fits with the overall art style.

No way man. There is no excuse to have fire effects like look like something out of a PS2 game, or possibly earlier, on the PS3.

Try turning on the Co Op, I'm playing on Hard and it feels just right with real people for support.

The GameTrailers review didnt make it sound so terrible, will definately think about picking it up when it goes <£20

My theory for this game is that it started as a multiplatform title that had the xbox 360 as lead platform since there was a PC version too, and what happened is that they had difficulties re-adjusting to the PS3 as main in a short time, which led to the delays and low res.

I'm buying it later on. The GameTrailers review made it look at least competent. There's no way it can be a 4.5, I've played many broken FPSs in my time and this one at looks looks like it functions properly, even if the frills are...lacking.

It most definitely isn't a 4.5. The GT review is probably the most accurate, although I would add maybe .2 to the overall score.

Are those impressions pre- or post-dog-asswipe? And if post, did you wipe it before putting it back in your PS3? :lol

Haze or Turok, which FPS is better out of those two?
HAZE imo.

played the demo bit. This game would be better with no cutscenes. The LOD on the ship is ridiculous. Like I said last time, the game is just ugly. It's a shame. The character models aren't so bad, but the environments are hideously ugly. Shiteous.

The dialog is obnoxious and unfunny and unclever and everything. It's like getting hit over the head with this stupid garbage.

I still think the gameplay is pretty solid. The enemy AI is better than COD4. I think it's probably more fun than that awful single player anyway.

But god the presentation is embarrassing.

Turok hand down. I don't know how you could prefer Haze sorry.

From the Game Trailers review Haze does look really funny so that's one way they could prefer it.

"I did something bad. Oh god! I did something bad!"

:lol

Made even funnier by the terrible animation.

Wait, who exactly is defending Haze here?

Turok's controls are awful. Also, the game looks really bad on the PS3. I mean, are we comparing what I played of Turok (on the 360 too, mind you) up to the awful cave bits vs. this?

Vehicle controls are atrocious.

If you knew the context for that part, it would make a lot more sense.

I don't know. I couldn't get through the demo of Turok. That game pissed me off from the start where they put you in a dark-ass cave and expect you to find your way out when you can't fucking see. Since I've only played the demo of Turok, but have Haze, I have a biased perspective but I must say that I can recommend Haze out of those two. If you go into the game expecting good gameplay, a awful (but humorous) story, then you'll be satisfied.

GamerZero said:

Although I can't comment on Haze yet besides the demo. Turok is a decent shooter. So many people have panned that game but I doubt they've actually played it. The controls take getting used to but are adequate. The soldier combat is where this game is at. Kane's men will mess you up on any difficulty. Which provides some intense shoot outs. Finally Turok can be found for a cheaper price. So I'd go with Turok right now over Haze.

If Blu-ray Discs can handle pizza cutters, they can handle a bit of dog shit.
Genji and Sonic are proof of that.

Based on the demos that are on PSN, Haze wins.

I think I won Turok a few weeks back on Ebay and it's still to be delivered, so I guess I'll get a better opinion soon.

Worse then most UT based games? I don't think so! I have only noticed it a few times and in most cases it was after a my whole team has died and the game reloads, I'm not sure what you mean when your talking about the sound dropping out, do you mean in between levels on the Mantel plane? and whats a Boosh?

It's only worse then Turning Point because of Turning Point's horrendous frame rate and loading problems.
