Haze Official Thread, JCBossman Memorial and Skittles Appreciation. BOOSH!

To me the most disappointing thing I've heard about this game is the fact it only comes with six... that's six multiplayer maps.

I'm sure that you're to configure the levels to how many players there are, but at the end of the day. It's still just six levels.

I know that we're living in the age of DLC, but even still. TimeSplitters had an embarassment for riches when it came to the number of multiplayer maps those games shipped with.

I think TS-Future Perfect had something like fifteen multiplayer maps to unlock. HAZe smacks of a game that was thrown together in the later stages of development because the studio had already moved into something else.

Not to mention the user-created maps as well.

Game sounds amazing while in Nectar Disruption. Kinda wish the guns always sounded like that. Just reached the part where I make the switch and am kinda ticked I have to get ready to leave for work. Also the 4 wheeler controls like crap while the buggy was awesome to drive.

Well now I've done it. I ordered Haze (and Second Sight) from VGP. They should arrive by next week. I'll post my opinions of the game once I have them.

Oh GOD...what have you done! :D

Well as for Haze, I'm still enjoying it. Am I crazy? Feels like a good popcorn action (granted B movie) fps to keep me busy till NG2, MGS4, and AITD.:D

Team Fortress 2, which is one of the best multiplayer FPS out there, has a ridiculously low number of map. I guess they've put their effort on quality and not quantity this time around :lol

Agreed.

the coop is seamless (i sound like a commercial), no lobbies or the game ending when people quit.

supports DS3 nicely too

Well I'm glad to see some people enjoying it for what it is and not shitting all over it. The game is fully fuctional and provides some fun moments. Its not the best fps but it doesn't have to be. Its got issues for sure (ai, textures, etc) but even what some herald as the best games ever (GTAIV, Halo3) have issues as well.

That's true. I spent hours toying with this mode on the Gamecube. It's strange to think at that point Free Radical were so far ahead of the curve in this regard.

Hopefully E3 will have either Battlefront3 or TimeSplitters4 and Free Radical's return to form.

I thought the demo was ok nothing special. I got the game coming from gamefly but to me it sounds like this game is the ps3 version of hour of victory.
Ha ha, I totally forgot about that game. I don't think Haze is quite THAT bad. Hour of Victory was broken beyond any playability. You could run around and take out an army of Nazis with your knife. Great fun.

Hyped? People have been shitting on the game since.. forever.
Yeah, that's one thing I'm wondering about. Everyone is shitting on this game as a result of the "hype", but outside of the actual marketing shit (who listens to that anyways?) nearly everyone has been crappy on this game for months. I think there were a handful of people that remained positive about it, but in general, most people seemed to expect a poor to mediocre game.

Well now I've done it. I ordered Haze (and Second Sight) from VGP. They should arrive by next week. I'll post my opinions of the game once I have them.
Now Second Sight was good fun. That was probably the only Free Radical game I've really enjoyed. It had its share of flaws, but the experience was still very solid. Hopefully you selected the superior XBOX version (60 fps). If not, well, I suppose it should still be acceptable.

Considering that TimeSplitters was a launch title for the PS2, "far ahead of the curve" doesn't even do Free Radical justice. They set the benchmark for console FPS games until Halo came out.

I really hope they bounce back from this. Even if Haze is (when I try it out) a good game, the critical slaughtering it's taken will affect them both in status and finances.

Tell me this game is rife with Frisky Dingo references....
For the thread title, we would have also accepted KA-KOW!
I didn't like the demo, but this game isn't a 3, thats just someone being a prick. Even with its issues, the 4 player co-op alone makes it fun if you have a good groups

Does Haze use rumble at all? The box says it does (it specifically says "Dual Shock 3 Vibration Function") but I didn't feel it at all when I just played it. I looked through options and couldn't find anything there either. So either it's a misprint, I haven't turned it on, or it is used so sparingly that it doesn't get used once in the first 20 minutes

OK, I have the game and have played SP until the switch. I'll give my quick impressions:

Firstly, how the fuck did IGN manage to give this game a 4.5? Seriously.

I'm not saying the game is perfect, it has major flaws but from what I've played it is easily a 7/10 but has major lows as well as major highs.

That's the problem. It's so variable. Everything turns from good to bad to good. I'll start off with GFX and sound. Whilst the GFX aren't amazing they're decent. Some textures looks really detailed, but then some look horrible. You'll go from one section where everything looks super detailed then you'll go through to a next section and it'll look like crap. However, something that is consistent is the frame rate. Never has it died even when loads of stuff is happening on screen. Also something that is really good is the particle effects. When grenades blow it looks beautiful. Finally I love that they use colour. I'm not against the Gears and Unreal look of games, but it's a breath of fresh to see some colours in a game. The audio is also variable. The sound of guns and grenades is really good. It actually sounds a lot better when you have a Nectar Disruption. However, some of the voice work is terrible. Some of the characters are really well done like Morgan and Skin coat, but some of the soldiers sound disgusting.

Onto gameplay. Again it's variable. Some of the set pieces are awesome. When you're all dosed up on Nectar it's a great feeling to be sniping guys off from afar. The best bits are fighting through narrow corridors - the fights get pretty intense. However, some bits are lame. When you just have a huge open sparse area to clear it feels kind of boring. This also leads onto the AI. In narrow corridor type environments, they work fine. They take cover and fire at all your team not ignoring all other people and just attacking you. However, in open environments you can really see how flawed they are. They stick to preset areas and if you flank them they won't notice until you fire at them.

I also dipped into multiplayer. It was fun. We had to defend out Nectar and wait for it to be extracted down river. Whilst the rebels were trying to blow it up. The map felt a little large, but it may be because I was just wondering around and didn't have a clue of where I was.

Also. It seems free DLC is coming. Maybe more online maps?

After the switch in SP is where the game goes downhill for me. And I'll say it again, the vehicles and their controls are trash. Pure trash.

Yes it does.

I agree. The 4x4 was horrible to drive.

Worse than Crysis? (Controlling the VTOL at the end was murder.)

Well, Crysis does indeed feature awful vehicle controls, but most of those vehicles are optional. They basically work as set pieces that also allow optional control if you wish. You do have to take control of an aircraft of some sort later in the game, but this actually handles decently.

How do you enable it then? Or should it be on automatically? I'm playing the PAL version so I hope it's not been removed from the European version...I'll be really pissed off if that has happened

What should I update it with? I'll add some impressions and the free DLC.

Having played a bit more I think the main problem is that it was rushed. They obviously showed the game way too early. The game just feels incomplete. There are hints of a really good shooter in it. The gameplay is really good, it's the just some of the environments suck.

I believe multiplayer does not matter when one is judging a game on its single-player. It does in the overall aspect of the opinion of th game, but not when justl ookign through the single player filter

Lets all take a deep breath here.

Now. How many of you people in this thread blasting Free Radical have played HAZE yet? *Crickets* okay. I'd love to hear some impressions from those who actually played it and hear what the problems were.

You should listen to the beginning of this week's 1UP Yours then.

Bad:

-Shoddy AI
-GFX are very variable
-Vehicles handle like shit

Good:

-Gameplay is very good in most places
-Some of the shoot outs are really well designed.

Overall, it's a good game. Nothing special but far from terrible.

it doesnt use it a lot, mainly it comes on when you have a nectar disruption or whatever...havnt noticed it after the switch in SP, maybe it'll use it more

I wish I had time for a detailed write up. After a few hours lastnight (pre-switch).

Graphics: B-
+ Some VERY detailed character and set piece models.
- Some not very detailed set piece models.
- Animations are standard fair and in some cases below.

Sound: B
+ Voice acting in cut-scenes is well done. Some funny lines tossed around during gameplay.
* Music is there, but not very noticable.
* Weapon sounds are run of the mill.

Control: B-
+ Complete control over binds.
- Vehicle control doesn't feel right.
* Game felt better with auto-aim off.

Gameplay: B-
+ Destructible cover
+ Coop is a blast but
- Coop is almost required on Hard due to AI teammates always being killed.
- AI is standard fare with both teammate and Enemy using cover and occationaly being sneaky, but certain enemies such as the flamethrowers act VERY wierd.

i fucked up and forgot to remove haze from my gamefly Q and now a copy is headed my way

can't wait to see that awesome flame thrower effect first hand!

Haze is way better than Turok and TimeShift.

i sincerely doubt that it's better than timeshift. but i'll find out soon enough

I actually think the effect is quite good. It's stylized I suppose. I might just be bad, but it looks pretty effective and fits with the overall art style.

WickedLaharl said:
my understanding from reading the reviews was that the flame effect is like straight out of 1999 levels of awful.

I thought at first that was hyperbole (the 386 mention in the ign review is, kinda), but looking at the video review... holy shit. Yeah it's really, really bad

Got to play and watch some Haze tonight. What a mess this game is. I just can't believe they released such an obviously unfinished game. In my rather short playtime I've seen more collision bugs, LOD/shadowing issues than in a full playthrough of most games. One example, walk to a Mantel car (or whatever it's called) and keep pressing up. Yep, it looks like your character is having a seizure or something, going up and down like this.
Gunplay isn't too bad, and the nectar stuff works nicely (though it's more like they made the game almost unplayable because you can't see shit without it), but the vehicle handling is just terrible. There is no word to describe how laughable they are to drive.
I'm not a FPS specialist by any means, but I definitely can "judge" when one is broken. And HAZE most definitely is. I honestly wonder if the whole delay wasn't a marketing ploy by Ubisoft and the game was actually "finished" for months.
For you comparison freaks, hour of victory was much worse than this, HoV is the buggiest piece of shit of a game I've seen during this generation. But HAZE is definitely among the worst of the lot.

Well I haven't seen a ton of the collision bugs and shadowing issues you speak of but maybe I just don't have an eye for them???

Your right on the driving, its pretty bad and could definetly use some work. As for the game being a broken, well broken would define something that cannot be used for its intended purpose. Honestly, the game has issues but I wouldn't say its broken and unplayable.

Thanks for giving your impressions though, having actually played the game. More then most can say on this post.

I've played to completion Turok, Timeshift, Jericho, and completed half of Blacksite and Turning Point. So far, I'd put Haze up there with Turok. Nothing extremely awesome but...having enough fun to want to finish it.
