HDLOADER - Found Impressions

I browse through these kinds of things and I have yet seen any mention of the possibility of playing PSX games from the HDD, where did you heard it from?

they probably mistook the PSX Exploit for a way to play PSX games via HDLoader, when it's actually just a way to load up HDLoader off a memcard without the HDLoader Disk... i know a friend of mine thought that when he read about the PSX game exploit and i had to correct him...

Ah. That probably explains it.

I finally got a copy of Action Replay Max EVO for the PS2. I can safely say that copying the system file(it has the exploit) to my flash drive and transfering it to another memorycard pretty much work. I have three memory card that will each boot from a different game(Final Fantasy Tactic, Final Fantasy VII, and Harvestmoon BTN). The cool thing is that I the backed up system file contains HDLoader/HDadvance, FAPLink, ExecFTP, and the KeyLauncher that you used to launch each application(It's basically a menu to launch app off of MC).

Too bad that there isn't a ps2 save application yet that lets you open .max files(AR Max save format), so that all you need to do is put in a new title.db that's for your game for the exploit to work. This will makes it a lot easier for people with unmodded ps2 to use the exploit.

so what you're saying is that the .max file you found only works if you own a copy of ff tactics, VII, or harvest moon, and that you can't edit the file if you wanted to use another game?

also hope it's not against the TOS, but where did you find the .max file?

Tenchir, where did you buy the AR Evo? I was thinking about just buying the MAX drive at stores but is this any different from EVO besides the software?

I am saying that there's three different max file I created, each of them has different Title.db. I could easily change the title.db file so that another game could be used for booting it as long as I know the code(located on the CD), I would just need to go through FTP(loading ExecFTP on the PS2) and replace the file.

I created the .max file by using AR Max Evo's MC>USB feature, the file format that it uses is .max, so I could easily transfer them to my PC then uploaded to people. The Exploit is just the system configuration file. Apps(HDLoader, PGen, FAPLink, etc...) are also installed into the system configuration file. I had to install apps through FTP. Took me a whole day to figure the whole exploit thing out, lucky I had CDRW that PS2 can read.

Who says I bought it? :P You can buy them from www.codejunkies.com. Not sure if it's available to EB or Gamestop yet. The Max Drive only lets you backup/load save files and update your AR codes, I think. The AR EVO lets you do more than that, it also plays divx(you have to use the AR software to burn the divx to cd), update code through online, get saves from online, and of course cheat codes.

Has anyone tried 'modding' the NA to fit with a Western Digital HD? I can't get the damn screws to loosen the IDE/power plugs. Someone told me it isn't even a torx screw

http://forums.psxforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=22522&highlight=western+digital

its a torx 6 size = 3/8" tip (if i remember correctly) it should be the same one that can open up a cell phone since the cellphone uses torx 6 screws on its board

You dont have to take the screws out...That metal sheild is just held in by plastic clips...What you need is a dremal...Look at these pics...

Let's see if I can find more info on modding NA, I seen more, but can't remember the sites.

I bought a size 8 torx and it was the same shape, only bigger. I couldn't find a size 6, so I ordered one online. It's going to take a couple of days, though.

These programs are too confusing for me. :(

Why can't they have an HDLdump for dummies or something? A program that lets me install to the hdd without opening up my pc case. :(

The thing is that you need to load up the server program on the PS2 so that the client program(FAPLink, ExecFTP, HDdump, etc...) will be able to connect to it. FAPLink is really easy to use once you are able to connect to the PS2, you just need to select the iso you made, make the title, then upload.

To load the server program, you either have to boot it from memory card through the exploit or from CDR if your console is modded.

I modified my NA to fit a WD 120GB HDD (it was on sale at Fry's for $50 after MIR). I trimmed off part of the (flimsy) metal cover next to the power plug and then sanded down one end of the plug to make it fit. Its tight, but it works. This is a real hack job, so attempt at your own risk.

BTW, anybody else notice that a lot of recent releases are incompatible with HDL/A? I wonder if developers have already caught on?

Either I have a different kind of network adaptor or I'm stupid. Torx = screws that look like a star, right? I have a torx screwdriver and it doesn't fit. The screws inside my NA only has 3 sides, not a star

Use a phillips screwdriver.

What model do you have, and when did you get the NA? Mine's SCPH-10281...got it a couple months after its release

Hmm what the hell...why do I have different screws :|

I don't know which screwdriver to use. You sure phillips works?

Funnily enough, my UK network adapter uses Philips crosshead screws. Maybe the manufacturers just buy any old screws off ebay and hope its fits ;p

Is there a way to downsize games to save HD space? Backed up Vice City on the HD and it turns out 4 gb. I swore the game's data only takes 3 gb...and that the rest is just dummy data

you could always melt the end of a bic pen down and mold it into the shape of the screw head

I have all the necessary tools needed to do the MC Exploit, with one exception... i have no way of getting the files on the memory card right now.

What are my options again? I know a particular verision of Shark Port should do it, but what else? I know this has been touched upon, but I need a quick run down...

did god strike my head?
I dont know but i've got a question. Can you say add this edited file into a already formated PS2 harddrive hooked up to your PC and then import it back into the MC so you can run it from there? I dont know if its possible. But i've stored saves on my HDD and i think i found the folder by snooping around.

Anyone got any ideas?

Also can you hot swap HDD's?

DaCocoBrova, you need to find someone who has a modded ps2, or get a Sharkport/Xport or Action Replay MAX I think

Anyone know if you can remove dummy files from a PS2 game? I really want to optimize my HD so I can have as much space as possible

Well, you can simply rip the game files from the DVD in the folder on your PC, remove the dummy files (or better yet, replace them with files of 0 size, or even better yet, cut the original dummy so that it has it's say, first 1MB intact, but remove the rest of the file), then recreate the ISO from the ripped files, using the CDGenPS2. I've been using it to make PS2 ISOs for many homebrew apps that I'm running with HDLoader. It will work fine unless your game is doing some checks to see if the dummy file is there and the right size. If the game is doing that, there's nothing you can do aside of haxoring it's exe file.

Even if you hook the HDD into your computer, how would you be able to transfer it? PS2 harddrive uses a different file system, so all you will be seeing is an unformatted HDD. Sharkport MIGHT work if you can find a software to convert .max(Max Drive format) format to .npo format(that's what sharkport uses right?).

It's one way to do the exploit, that's assuming you have the right game for the exploit to work.... like Final Fantasy Tactic. To change to a different PSX game, you need to be able to create a new Title.db file with the appropiate code from that game and replace the current one. If you have a modded PS2, then look at the previous pages for links on instruction to install the exploit.

Try looking for GTA rip-kit at www.ps2nfo.com under PS2HDD.

I know how to make title.db files. I'm just asking if you need a AR MAX EVO, or if just a plain AR MAX wlll work.

You need the EVO version or Max Drive because you need a way to get the files off the USB flash device.

PC > USB > PS2

So I assume you found a software that will extract files out of .max file and rebuild it after you done editing the Title.db?

No, I'm just saying I have everything I need except a way to get the files on the memory card. Just trying to decide between Max/Max EVO/Swap Magic.

Wario, from what I've seen, very few PS2 games use dummy files of any kind.
Dummies are used for padding, so the actual data is pushed to the outside tracks on the disc - makes for faster reading. What also makes excellent padding material is FMVs and music data, so if you have enough of those you don't need dummies :D They easily take Huge amounts of space, and usually aren't dependant on disc speed in any manner.

But I wanted to mention that many games store their data files in larger packed files, and dummy padding can just be embeded inside those files. GT3 has a single file spanning nearly 3GB, and IIRC a large chunk of it is just zeroes ;)

some games also have huge dummies... like DOA2 Hardcore had like a 3GB dummy... alot of those swap disk people got that game back in the day because it had such a huge TOC...

Is there a universal rip kit or am I just gonna have to live with oversized games on the HD? :P

I too would like some ez-rip out the dummy files utility if it exists, as I'm down to 20 GBs remaining out of the 120 GB hard drive. I find it hard to believe Parappa 2 is 4 gigs versus Harmonix/Konami's DDR/Frequency series' 1 GB or less offerings (even if Harmonix's stuff doesn't work :P)

Also, I may as well ask since I haven't been able to find it myself. I've been looking for that thread that brought up the question of what games should I keep a look out for for PS2 imports. Any one have a link lying around? o_O

Got my Swap Magic/Slider card combo, but I can't seem to boot any discs with the MC exploit. I've tried a couple different tutorials, but every time the swap magic CD just turns red (means it can't boot the cd).

EDIT: Wow, that was a pain. I couldn't boot SHIT with the SM CD, not even original US CDs. This is what I ended up doing: Use SM DVD, swap for CogSwap DVD-R, then EJECT and put in original US PS2 CD game, THEN swap for CD-R with MC exploit. Christ! But now it's done and I'll never have to do that shit again.

Is there a reformat option anywhere in HDLoader? An ftp'd install fucked up, so there's like 4 GB that are just wasted on my HD.

For formatting, you can use either:

- WinHIIP 1.6 (a software that lets you put ISO files on your HD when you attach the HD your PC)
- HDUtil 1.1
- Sony's utility disc, which maybe only works with their official HDD, but I'm not sure

I have an unmodded PS2, do I need to install specific programs to the Memory Card and/or PS2 HDD to be able to transfer games from PC to PS2 HDD without physically removing the hard disk (via network cable)? I already performed the HDLoader MC exploit, do I still need to copy some program to the memory card or HDD to FTP games, and if so can someone point me to instructions on how to do it?

For the first question, I think you need some certain files on the memory card to be able to transfer games over the network. I'd probably wouldn't do this cause the transfer speed is ass. Like 600k/sec crappy

Second question...wait, didnt you just ask this? :P
