Here is Why Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a True Next-gen Game

Maybe. But it's more complicated. They are going to use async compute for that. Well the ACE engine runs about 20% faster on PS5 and the PS5 has more L2 (and most probably L1) cache by CU so the efficiency will be better on PS5 because latency will be lower.

I still expect XSX to have the advantage in compute heavy games, but when there are particles, usually there are plenty of transparencies and things to rasterize.

Yup, it's 22.53% faster to be exact.

OP has been updated (I do minor updates frequently), added this:

Subsurface scattering (translucency):

As noticed by @Pedro Motta , you can see it clearly on the pinky alien on the left here.

vlcsnap-2020-08-30-04h42m56s399.png

You should update it and remove the "Ray-Traced shadows" stuff.
There is no evidence of it unlike the reflections that we have confirmed by the developers.

How could it be denied? Did Ratchet's shadow failed in some frames? Most of the raytracing is for some parts indeed, not fully raytaced.

See that's the kind of shit I don't want in my thread. I bet you not a single Sony gamer will discuss this game in my thread.

Your ego and insecurity are equally astonishing.

Frankly, why do you think people care about your thread so much?

I suppose I can't technically say for sure that nothing uses but we really don't have anything that supports the claim. You can have good shadows with raytracing and the developers have been very excited to talk about what ray traced features they are using so I think they would most likely have mentioned it if it has it...

Once again I'm not saying it's impossible but I think you should stick to stuff that we know rather than stuff that "might" be there.

I think you can even do raytraced shadows to some extent in current gen in a software level, just like global illumination.

Some people don't understand how reflections work on different materials.

They think everything should be chrome like in the RT demos.
Hmmmmm :pie_hugging

I'm liking the improvements in lighting department. That purple/pink glow from the portal looks lovely. Floor reflections look extremely low resolution and I think the previous choice of material did a better job at hiding it. I would make Clank more reflective (main character, huge potential for some nice close-up reflection porn in cut-scenes) and not the floor.

Also, I hope they will be able to make the portal reflect in the floor. It looks unfinished now.

Ok bring an official statement mentioning PS5 games that are coming to PC, not some pseudo insider BS.

Huh? Check you facts, this is from sonys own corporate report:

"We will explore expanding our 1st party titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability"

So you think further promoting growth and profitability means the exclude ps5 games? The games with biggest profile and active advertising that people actually want? That makes no sense.

1,000,000 to 1 odds based on this we will see ps5 games on pc. Saying anything else is serious denial.

The more I watch the gameplay footage and the gifs the more I'm amazed by the state of the game. It seems that it's in a good position, development wise , maybe we'll see the game earlier than expected 🤔. I'm curious to know when did development started for this game ... Nice thread btw .

@Op.

Hope you getting good money from Sony for all the effort you made in your post lol

Not as much effort as those clown youtubers like Dealers, colteastwood, Etc. not to mention that they also spread lies and FUD about PS5. Everything OP posted here are all facts and this is a true next gen game, I'm hype as much as OP for our coming next gens experience that Sony's PS5 will bring us! :messenger_bicep:

If you have to make a deep analysis defending why the game qualifies for Next-Gen experience then maybe it's not a very good example. I miss the days when showing a trailer with Next-Gen graphics was enough to make the audience lose their minds.

The particle effects are sick though.

I think when comparing with XSX it's fair to state PS5 is a ~10tf machine if we take into account the occasionnal downclocks (2% downclocks giving 10% power reduction). With 20% faster clocks we are talking about the worst case scenario on PS5 and it should be sufficient to make a point.

This is all based on Cerny's statements and Matt's statements at ree.

Okay? point is there is no reason to assume that this is the technique they are using.

Compare it to the PS4 version, and you'll easily see it. Ratchet is already raytraced, along with other enemies and objects, raytraced shadow is part of it.

Current gen has raytraced shadows but very low quality and pixelized. UE5 showed 16K shadows for instance.

Yup, it's still pre-alpha, and we should expect further improvements and polishing going forward. The most noticeable flaw is the purple portal reflections, hope they address that in the final build.

Thanks for Snowdonhoffen Snowdonhoffen for this catch:

I made sure to leave no gaps in my thread for high quality trolling, so you'll only see cheap attempts. This thread is a celebration of next gen beauty, everyone should be happy, just like all Sony fans were excited when they thought Hellblade2 was running in realtime gameplay on the console.

If you have to make a deep analysis defending why the game qualifies for Next-Gen experience then maybe it's not a very good example. I miss the days when showing a trailer with Next-Gen graphics was enough to make the audience lose their minds.

The particle effects are sick though.

Some are watching the trailer in 1080p or smartphones. Using sharp 4K screenshots gives you the opportunity to see how good it is in any device as you can zoom in and notice the details much more clearly. Most people are going crazy about R&C, even hardcore, well-know xbox fans on twitter. :messenger_ok:

..... But was Ratchet always a mess?
My impressions with the character being largely based on this demo: Did Ratchet break the bad guys gun and make thinga exponentially worse? Why did he start shooting those pirates the moment he ended up on the ship? Did he know them? Seems rude to just start shooting the second you end up somewhere new.

IDK Ratchet seems like kinda a jerk.

That's some funny analysis. I think Insomniac should release an apology just like recent apologies from 343i, Ubisoft for hurting someones feeling and being rude. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

Please confirm where it was said R&C would be released on PC. I'll wait.
Asking people to show you things doesn't work here. I've been asking to be shown Alex's obvious bias for a while and still haven't gotten a thing.
Relevant comment as this has been brought up and joked about several times in this very thread.

Alex's bias is no important anyway, this other matter is a FUD attempt.

Screenshot, timestamp, quote? I will gladly change my opinion on anyone if someone actually shows me different.
Edit
RC looks fantastic though. The warping doesn't impress me though as it's what I've been expecting since getting my first SSD 10ish years ago. Been waiting for games to be developed without any thought going into spinners.

Re 60 fps option.. the videos we've watched are, i assume, 30 fps.. did anyone at any point think there was something disappointingly sluggish about anything? It looks incredible, fast, slick.. surely this challenges the next gen narrative about 60 fps. Metroid Prime was locked to 60fps.. it's just not so all-important~~~

For me, for any kind of action game, if you can achieve 60fps just by using some kind of reconstructed 4k then it's an absolute no brainer.

It's so much easier to appreciate good graphics at 60fps that whatever you lose from the reconstruction, or even just a lower resolution, is more than made up for by the increased motion clarity.

I even found that to be true for God of War, and that was nowhere near locked 60fps.

lol you think a “launch window” game that we’re 2 months away from is in pre-alpha?

I'm expecting Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in March/April 2021. 4K/30FPS/RT or 1440P/60FPS/RT are my guesses in regards to resolution and performance options.

You're interpreting that how you want like it's a similar approach to Microsoft but as seen with Horizon it's clearly a shoe in to get PC gamers interested in the sequel that they need a PlayStation to play. This is also backed up by PS executives recent vernacular on exclusives.

You won't see a true next-gen game for either of the platforms until mid to end of the new generation cycle. Such examples are God of War, TLOU 2 for PS4 and Sea of Thieves and Gears 5 for Xbox One. In PS5's and XSX case i think it will be at least till 2022+ for real next-gen games to start coming out so we are looking at Awoved, Fable and whatever Sony releases in that same time period. Closest thing we have right now next-gen games is prolly R&C and Horizon Forbidden West, for the XSX it would be Hellblade 2, Fable and Awoved when I can start saying we are officially in next-gen (Personal subjective opinion) , but for now we have to enjoy glorified 3rd party cross-gen releases just look, feel and play better on the newer consoles. I do not even consider Cyberpunk 2077 a next-gen game at this point.

For me, my 1st next-gen game was God of War (even though Bloodborne was my GOTY) followed by Sea of Thieves and TLOU 2 if we are strictly speaking exclusives here. As for 3rd party titles its really hard to say because there are so many good games out there that released in between all the exclusives.

Actually, no. On paper PS5 has the avantage of triangles, pixel performance (particles and transparencies) and higher quality RT (more rebounds) with fewer rays. XSX should shine on number of textures, higher resolution and more rays (will less rebounds, so lower quality).
I can't agree on XSX having better textures, PS5 has more ram available per frame for textures thanks to the significantly faster ssd/io.

Yes, even if PS5 has just 4 mb of L2 cache like 5700/5700 xt it would have around 14% more cache per CU than XSX. So more data ready to be used (per CU) at less latency.

It really is an impressive looking game. The level of detail, the sheer number of particle effects, the amount of high detail models present, the rapid loading of new assets and environments, and the ray traced reflections. All look damn good. Ratchet & Clank in 2016 was a Year 3 title for PS4 and it looked amazing then. Assuming no delays, Rift Apart is a Year 1 title for PS5 and it really does stand quite a good bit above its predecessor. This is a good example of what Sony first party can accomplish on early PS5 titles compared to midlife PS4 titles. And Insomniac isn't Naughty Dog or Guerrilla Games when it comes to this stuff.

Yes in first party games, but that won't be seen in multiplats.
Is that 'guaranteed', what prevents some hard working and talented third party studios from implementing some PS5 specific optimizations regarding the textures? :) Even if this feature isn't used at all XSX and PS5 having the same amount VRAM i can't see how Microsoft's console woul have better textures based on hardware.
