Hideki Kamiya: "Huge dev resources didn't help Capcom" #ShotsFired

FFXIV is an extremely special case; most MMOs spend several years in development with a team of a couple hundred, for 14, they're trying to basically remake the game in a single year. Meaning pretty everyone in Square that's not desperately needed somewhere else is on the project plus they've been poaching all the talent they can from outside the company.

Very true. Also the expense is justified somewhat by the fact that this time the product really HAS to impress, this is a credibility restoration exercise so they really need to go all out.

Also given the huge amounts of revenue that FFXI has generated (and continues to do so after al these years) it represents an opportunity for long-term income.

Devs laying down "The reason you suck" speeches.

Can't wait till they find out about FF XIV.

Don't they have 700+ working on that?

FFXIV is kind of an unprecedented situation and they need A Realm Reborn to be completed as soon as possible, since the current version of the game is still operating on limited content.

If they do successfully turn that game around I wouldn't criticize them for putting such a huge workforce on it. Most of that massive team is probably just doing asset production anyways as they have had to rebuild the entire world from the ground up pretty quickly.

He's asspained it's better than all the GoW games and the port wasn't good.

Nicely done.

It helped them with two competent versions of the game at least.

I own boy copies of Bayonetta, and am currently almost done platinuming the PS3 version. On the other hand, I never bought DMC 4 because every time I tried to fire up the demo I thought it was breaking my PS3.

I don't yet know what 600 personnel is going to add to RE6, but I do know you don't need anywhere near that figure to create an extravagant, gorgeous, fully-complete, super-polished, content-packed AAA game.

Such as Bayonetta.

But although I love Kamiya and consider him to be a great industry spokesman of generally fine taste, he dislikes some pretty awesome games. DMC4, Shinobi, and Ninja Gaiden 2002 don't deserve his dismissal.

Compare the amount of content in Bayonetta and Resident Evil 6 though. Bayonetta was a 6-8 hour action game with no multiplayer. RE6 has a ~27 hour campaign with an extra Mercenaries mode, both of which support co-op. I would argue it's difficult to create that much single player content with a small team.

Oh, and the PS3 version of Bayonetta sucked donkey balls.

They port it to sega. Again I wished they had more people and actually developed it in house. That is the point.

They didn't need more people to develop Vanquish in-house for the PS3. Bayonetta was developed as a 360 exclusive, simple as that.

What the shit? Sure seems like you have no idea how much content Bayonetta has.

I think huge dev teams give you more potential, but they are harder to use efficiently...

/thread

it's all about the vision, focus, & co-ordination abilities of those in charge. large projects don't have to be clusterfucks if the talent's there, & it's managed / communicated with well...

that said, i agree that platinum & from've done some serious 'less is more / more is less' type schoolin' this gen :) ...

They seem to have gotten some serious balls in their pants all of the sudden now that Bayonetta 2 has a good publishing partner and Rising will likely be a success. Hopefully they don't have to worry about finances beyond that point.

.

RISING will probably be a success, which is awesome. If it isn't, might as well become 2nd party for Nintendo. We already need to buy a WiiU for Bayo2, most Platinum fans wouldn't be negatively affected by this.

can't argue with the fact that port was a piece of shit.

If it was better than GOW, than maybe he did not have to be begging publisher to pick up B2 ;)

Because the ps3 is a hugely successful system with killer software sales, and its advocates determne the worth and success of videogame franchises

People are ready to hate Capcom games before they even come out. Can't say I'm a huge fan of DMC4 but I think it's funny to note that people are already gearing up to hate RE6.

lol...

Yup, the better a game is, the more it sells. That's how it always works.

I don't know what your point is. :(

That Bayonetta is so good regardless of platform I would buy it a second time, and play the supposedly terrible port to absolute completion.

Way too much negativity around this one, pretty much stopped reading anything about it. Will judge on my own when I play the game.

Resident Evil has had it's critics since the 90's when I was in middle school. Somebody could always find something to complain about in those games, they were very polarizing. Like everyone could agree that shooting zombies is awesome, but "fuck yourself over" playthroughs upset a lot of people.

Yeah, but that has nothing to do with my post about DMC4 :P

You said that Capcom made two competent versions of their game, and Platinum did not. I am saying that Bayonetta is so "competent" that I got it twice, while DMC4 wasn't even "competent" in its demo form.

Actually Capcom made three competent versions of DMC4

He's talking about platform parity, not the quality of the game though.

Shouldn't Kamiya be tweeting some stupid random tweets?

Not like he isn't right, but with all the interviews and tweets from him I'm not sure he even has time to work.

I completely agree with him. Capcom has done many mistakes. But nevertheless, shots fired. He should talk less about things like that.
