Hideo Kojima consistently makes the best game trailers

Of course there are so many more but the above three are my personal favorites.

I say Hideo Kojima consistently makes the best trailers because whenever he reveals a new game I'm genuinely excited for it. Death Stranding, for example, always struck me conceptually as well as the way it's presented in trailers as something out of a dream. Metal Gear Solid: Rising was impressive both on a technical level and presentation (something that looks like it appeals to both Japanese and western audiences). Going back further to the reveal trailer for MGS4, it not only made me excited to play a new Metal Gear Solid game but also other games on PS3 since at the time I really bought into the Cell propaganda. However, what makes all of the trailers special is that they got gamers analyzing the details, not only asking what the games were about but questioning story details, characters etc.

It's difficult for me to be genuinely excited about playing new games which is why I cherish new game trailers from Hideo Kojima. I realize that probably makes me sound like a fanboy but I don't care. Publishers like EA, Square Enix (specifically Final Fantasy), Activision, Ubisoft, you name it, the guys who used to be cool back in the day aren't so cool today. Even the quality of Nintendo trailers for me personally feel like a roller-coaster (some are good and some I don't care about). Sony are extremely lucky to have a talented, visionary game designer like Hideo Kojima on board as they prepare for the newest console generation.

What say you, NeoGAF?

What an absolutely well penned OP, OP :messenger_fire: :messenger_heart:

I agree with just about everything that you said and I'll make sure to let Kojima-san know how much you appreciate his trailers. Keep fighting the good fight and don't forget to preorder the collector's edition of Death Stranding.
Thank you, fellow Kojima fan. I felt like making a thread like this ever since the lot of us got excited for the new Death Stranding trailer that released last month. Back then I talked about some of the imagery being creatively inspiring and I still stand by those words. Death Stranding, Dreams, and Ghosts of Tsushima will be to the PS4 what The Last of Us was to the PS3!

I agree. This tweet for me proved that Kojima is truly making another masterpiece, possibly his Magnum Opus:

Yes! It was like Hideo Kojima was on-stage E3 without there even being an E3 for Sony this year and seeing all of the positive reception to his new game trailer. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about Death Stranding.

he is too good at marketing. gamers have very little exposure to avant garde film and Kojima has watched so many movies, so he is constantly blowing their minds. the internet hype and anti-hype machine are all "oh but can he live up to this?" every time and i'm like "lol you don't even realize he is showing you the very thing you are asking for?"

some people fantasize some insanely mythical uber game that could never be created and are sad when a trailer does not achieve this. it was weird to see everyone love all the trailers for MGSV, then hate the game, and say there was no story. the trailers were the story! he showed most of the cutscenes to the world and they were like "this is amazing! this game is going to be great!" then for some reason when they saw the same ones in the game, it was "he lied to us!" i don't get it lol.

at any rate, yeah, he's too good. go back and play Ground Zeroes and watch the TPP trailer at the end of it. it is funny how Kojima was trolling people right from the start, he basically spoiled the ending of the game with that trailer.

That MGS4 trailer is one of my favorite trailers of all time. I really do wish the PS3 specs weren't downgraded. We could've gotten THAT game. I love MGS4, but it wasn't like that.

I enjoy playing his games period. I don't enjoy his marketing or his interviews.

That being said, he's never made me feel the way Peter Molyneux did after playing one of his games. So he usually meets his hype. Sometimes I get the feeling he doesn't trust us enough to put the pieces together as his story plots are usually heavily steered the whole way. But Death Stranding looks like a drug induced psychosis, and I can't wait to play it. lol

Not sure what you mean by PS3 specs having been downgraded? I assumed they were final at that point.

Yes. Definitely. The only problem is I can't see them before finishing because I care too much about story in a Kojima game to be spoiled in any way.

I don't enter Kojima games threads without finishing them first also. And have lots of Kojima games terms in my "Unspoiler" google chrome app too.

But yeah. His trailers are incredible and I need to muster a lot of willpower to not see them.

Agreed. Kojima has put me onto several great bands & music artists.

A SILENT FAULTY FEELING
A SILEEENT FAAAAUUUULT
Agreed. He sees the bigger picture into what gaming can become. Developers keep marketing games as toys or some app instead of marketing it with the same respect you see a AAA blockbuster film. Give a respectful trailer, have music that makes sense to the theme of the game. It seems that most don't really get it and game trailers come off as looking like a Saturday morning advertisement of a fisher price toy or something.

Kojima has a legacy of bringing forth arresting, sensational, stunning, attention-riveting trailers

Check this out dating back from April 1996

I've never seen that trailer. Thanks for posting.

It must have been mind-blowing for people to see who played Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2.

First of all, pretty much any trailer looks more impressive, than a full final product...
Trailers are always made from some of the most impactful scenes, while in the background usually plays rather good music.

As for Kojima, I think most of people, even his most hardcore fans still don't realize why his games are so popular, and critically acclaimed.

It's not really that he is so much some gaming visionary, as he is simply someone who first and foremost make games he himself will like, for him the very process of creating is fun too.

Like, yeah, current technology gives him so much options, but everyone who experienced first two Metal Gear games, Snatcher, and Policenauts, knows that even if he decided, for whatever reason, to make a next game, that is post Death Stranding, for NES, or PS1, it would still have been at the very least memorable experience.

One could argue that the best thing about Kojima is him taking his time to study the console, its capabilities, and then make something fun out of it.

Ah here comes the tired old argument. Yes he has talented people helping him, but the games he makes are still unique to his vision and nobody else creates games and makes trailers like he does.

The TGS 2005 trailer was made using the initial PS3 dev kits that had higher specs. They downgraded and Kojima had to scale back the game. If you look at initial interviews, he wanted a persistent battlefield that would influence the gameplay and the outcome would be meaningful. Snake could do nothing and watch it play out. We got a truncated version of that, but it could've been a lot more in depth. Sucks that Sony did that. We kind of got that open gameplay in V, but it didn't have the awesome urban settings of 4 or the great story.

I guess you can see some it in the trailer too. I'm gonna have to read up on the interview to see what else he might have mentioned.

I agree. MGS2 and 3 trailers were great:

I was so excited about MGS3 after that trailer.
Oh yes. Some of the best trailers ever and the games lived up to that hype. I still love those 2 games to pieces. MGS3 is the GOAT. MGS4 was just a little too ambitious. That TGS 2006 trailer was when I saw the downgrade. It was still good, but dang it took a dip.
