Holy Balls. The first two Alien movies are amazing.

4 had a lot of ... bad. Nasty ass thing at the end being what I would call a perma-stain on the series. But it was enjoyable for that it was, just needed a ton more work.

But hell, after seeing how great Aliens was I just assumed the last 2 would be hot shit on a stick cause there was not way they would best that (was gonna come in here and ask if I should even watch the last 2 but on one of these pages everyone was talking about how 3 was underrated ) so maybe my expectations were super low.
See I think they are hot shit on a stick, for different reasons. 3 was bad because of the behind the scenes bullshit and Frankenscript, and 4 was just an abortion on every conceivable level, from script, to actors, to direction.

But at least we can agree 1 and 2 are greatly better than 3 and 4. :]
Sure, we can agree on that, but "greatly better than" doesn't quite convey the chasm of difference in quality. The first two are masterpieces of cinema and the other 2 are hovering somewhere down in the bowels of Hollywood where 75% of everything made is better than them.

I just watched true lies.... I have to admit, quite disappointing.

Your avatar couldn't be any more appropriate. I don't want to share the planet with people who can't appreciate the godlike quality of True Lies. Get off my planet. >:|

Coming from someone who's going through Cameron's entire filmography right now, and also just watched True Lies for the first time only a few hours ago....You're insane. That was one of the best and most over the top action movies I've ever seen. Endlessly entertaining, and every single action scene was shot SO well.

It grows on you

Screw that, it was love at first sight for me. It is the right blend of serious (namely the rather timely terrorist...ness, and the family falling apart angle) and silly that gets you involved without ever losing the most important thing: fun. God damn this movie is fun.

The Abyss special edition. Make sure you watch that version

Hey guys, I'm looking to watch Blade Runner, thought this would be a good place to ask. I just need to know which version to watch, and which then to buy on blu-ray?

Uhhhh errrrrrr, didn't mean to imply it was my first time seeing everything. I've seen Avatar (Super extended version), Titanic, T2, and Aliens many times. First time seeing True Lies, The Abyss, and Terminator though (don't punch me, IDK why it took so long)

The Abyss special edition. Make sure you watch that version

I actually finished this like 30 minutes ago, and it WAS the SE. Great stuff, and the
Lindsey drowning/hypothermia and being brought back
scenes were done to perfection. Ed Harris KILLED that scene, gotDAMN.

Final Cut is the answer to both. But there is a blu release with all versions inside.

Get the one with all the versions.

Some people prefer the theatrical and there is a slim chance you might be one of them. If not, it is fascinating seeing all the changes that were made to the movie. Also the Work print is supposedly really interesting though I haven't seen it because that only comes on the bluray version of that pack.

Also, I personally think the Director's cut is the best. It has the most ambiguity and that ambiguity is a large part of what I think makes the movie standout from similar movies.

edit: but it is a bit slower paced and can be harder to sit through if that isn't your kind of thing.

Goddammit, you bitch! You never backed away from anything in your life! Now fight! Fight goddammit! Fight! *SLAP* Fight! FIIIIIiiiiiiight....

Even better is the making of The Abyss in the extras.

It seriously is one of - if not THE hardest film shoot ever.

Yeah, that scene is so good that whenever I see other shows/movies with similar scenes I just wonder whats the point, nothing can ever top the scene from Abyss

the biggest difference in blade runner versions is that the theatrical version has a voice over by ford and a happy ending.

i've only seen the movie once, but i thought it was missing a voice over (kind of a staple of noir films?) and then i saw clips of it with the voice over and it's fucking awful. also, the ending in the non-theatrical version is really awesome.

God yeah... though I almost wish she did die (or that it was the alien who interceded). I hate the cliche of coming back to life at the last second like that via emotional appeal... 8 + min (I think that was how long he said the swim was) with no oxygen... shouldn't have happened. Still an outstanding version of that scene, i just have issues with that trope

It was actually scientifically plausible. And Lindsay unconvincingly (since she does indeed think she's going to die) sets up the possibility of it not killing her due to how cold she'll be.

Eh... it sets it up for the viewer (as in, if they say it can happen in the movie and it is vaguely plausible- when it happens later it is less likely to break one's suspension of disbelief) but I'd need to see some scientific evidence that the coldness would have any impact on her brain's lack of oxygen that wasn't just death in a different form.

I'm sure it'll have the same effect on me, especially because I normally don't like those sort of scenes as they're so cliche. BUT ED HARRIS HOLY WAT.

Like I said, I normally roll my eyes just like you probably do, but maannnnnnnnnnn....ED HARRIS *fist pump*

EDIT: Another thing about True Lies: Great to have some context for the Arnold gifs. The angry zoom in, and paper crumbling scenes :lol

And why didn't anyone tell me about that badass bathroom fight scene? The lighting and dust in there was so beautifully James Cameron.

Woah. Wasn't expecting such backlash on that. I just found it to be a bit to long, and wished they quickened up the middle'ish part where Arnold was following around his wife. It just felt like it was a large break in the action, and not terribly interesting. Highlight of the movie was the chase scene with the horse.

Up next is aliens 3 then john carpenter's the thing. I've heard mixed things about it, so I'm hoping it's good.

Also i'm running out of stuff to watch, so any recommendations would be welcomed. Mainly 80s/90s stuff that I've missed over the years.

You've seen the Lethal Weapon movies, right?

I honestly think that is the best scene he has directed. It is just so goddamn good and it is just a few guys fighting in a bathroom! Amazing.

The Thing is a classic, one of my all time favorites. I'd recommend Big Trouble in Little China as another John Carpenter classic featuring Kurt Russel.

Maybe a little Escape from New York?

edit: this is a bit newer, but also criminally overlooked. have you seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? I guess it isn't really an action movie (I'm trying to recall what action scenes there are) but it is more or less an immensely entertaining buddycop noire flick (where one cop is a a crook posing as an actor and researching for a role) from the guy who wrote the first Lethal Weapon.

I saw the first one. Are the other 3 worth a watch?

Lethal Weapon 2 often swaps places with the first as my favourite in the series. Lethal Weapon 3 is alright, but easily the weakest in the series. And IMO Lethal Weapon 4 is a great time, has the best action out of the series, but lacks the darker edge that made the first two.

LW4 also features Riggs and Murtaugh taking on Jet Li in a fist fight to the death in the rain.

I'll definitely check out the second one then.

is Last Action Hero any good?

Gibson and Glover sell that shit all the way through the series. Nor did I ever get the hate, or understood why people prefer 3 to 4. 3 is probably the only one I wouldn't recommend unless they absolutely want more. Its sad we couldn't get LW5 with the Shane Black script.

I'll definitely check out the second one then.

Its John McTiernan. Director of Die Hard, Die Hard 3, Predator, Hunt for Red October, Thomas Crown Affair, and though its not praised highly, 13 Warrior. Damn fucking right its worth watching and there isn't anything like it for the era.

Ultima_5 you must have had a different lifestyle to me, I'm 23 and all I did in the 90's, early 2000's was watch television and movies. By the age of 10 I had seen most of the movies mentioned in this thread. As a kid T.V was my life

I honestly don't know how I missed out on some of this stuff. I realized the irony a couple years ago that I hadn't seen many of the action classics (rocky, rambo, terminator, die hard, et cetera) despite watching hong kong kung-fu movies almost exclusively in high shcool. Since then, I've been doing my best to fill in the gaps.

edit - I think I'm going to track down a copy of last action hero.

Best 'Last' action movie is LAST BOY SOUT.

is Last Action Hero any good?

Needs to be trimmed by about 30 minutes, but it is still pretty good. The ending also squanders a plot development that could have made up for the padded running time.

I saw that too. I enjoyed that one quite a bit. Is the sequel good?

Yes. I am one of the few that thinks ESCAPE FROM LA is as good as the original. The key to enjoying it is to realize you are watching a comedy. It is pretty much a sequel that is also a remake, in that it follows the structure of the first very closely and has Snake encounter scenarios and characters that are reminiscent from EFNY, but with an LA twist.

Movie run down:

Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 are garbage. The plots are horrible and by then I was past caring about the characters. Arguing which is better is a waste of time. I saw 2 before 1, so I like it better, but as time has marched on I think 1 was probably the better movie. Both are pretty overrated and well below the tier of films we've been discussing (Alien, Aliens, True Lies, director's Abyss, etc are all a lot better).

Escape From LA is Escape From NY with a satire of LA added in. The first is a campy fun action movie, the second is even more campy and intentionally funny. I liked it, personally, but the change in tone puts a lot of people off.

Last Action Hero is cute and fun.

The Thing (Kurt Russell version) is one of the best action/horror movies ever and definitely top-tier. That movie is awesome.

Just watched T2, and fuck if John Connor doesn't start out as a complete shit in that film.

Two of the first things he does: rip off some guy's bank account, and have the Terminator break the hand of a guy who until the previous minute had been trying to help him.

These two guys are just going about their business, trying to make a living in a cold, hard world, when they hear a kid screaming for help. They look over and see the kid being confronted by a huge, intimidating man. Against their better judgment they decide to help the kid. But when they get there, the kid tells them to fuck off. So one of them tells the kid he's a dipshit for fucking them around like that, and suddenly the big scary man, who a minute ago could have been molesting the kid for all they knew, grabs one of them, breaks his hand, and almost shoots him in the face.

I don't accept the premise that the future leader of humanity would ever say "Are you calling moi a dipshit?" with a stupid smirk on his face.
