Holy Balls. The first two Alien movies are amazing.

Just watched T2, and fuck if John Connor doesn't start out as a complete shit in that film.

Two of the first things he does: rip off some guy's bank account, and have the Terminator break the hand of a guy who until the previous minute had been trying to help him.

These two guys are just going about their business, trying to make a living in a cold, hard world, when they hear a kid screaming for help. They look over and see the kid being confronted by a huge, intimidating man. Against their better judgment they decide to help the kid. But when they get there, the kid tells them to fuck off. So one of them tells the kid he's a dipshit for fucking them around like that, and suddenly the big scary man, who a minute ago could have been molesting the kid for all they knew, grabs one of them, breaks his hand, and almost shoots him in the face.

I don't accept the premise that the future leader of humanity would ever say "Are you calling moi a dipshit?" with a stupid smirk on his face.
You don't accept that the one person tasked with leading the human race against an unending robot holocaust might have had a fucked up childhood? Also, the movie is filled with cliched early 90's slang that sounds horrible when heard today.

I could accept that he had a fucked up childhood, and I could probably accept the ATM thing if that were the end of it. But it's hard for me to maintain my sympathy for John after the "Are you calling moi a dipshit?" line. Cameron should have done that scene differently. It makes John look like a petulant little brat.

That's the point. It's supposed to be a stark contrast, and it's supposed to make you realize Judgment Day changes literally everything.

That's the idea. John has his eyes open by this experience. He goes from a snot-nosed brat to the saviour/leader of humanity

I don't think we're supposed to like John at the start of the movie. But he quickly changes (hell, he almost instantly orders the terminator not to kill anybody... so that is something, right?)

But... I also never grow to like him over the course of the movie either. So... there's that, i guess.

I know this is unpopular but I watched Part 3 (theatrical version) two days ago and....I didn't hate it.

T3 is okay as a standalone movie. It has a pretty neat chase sequence and a nice piece of music at the end. Its not good outside of that, though. As a Terminator film it is an abomination.

T4 is terrible as both a standalone film and as a Terminator film.

I was assuming that Paco was talking about the Alien movies with his post, actually.

Regarding Terminator 3..it's a movie I don't remember. No strong feelings for or against, as a stand alone.

I remember Ah-nold walking around with a casket.

And a hot terminator.

... and driving a crane(?) through a big glass sign. Not a lot else though...

This is all I remember. I don't even remember the glass sign :\

Oh, and I just remembered
the twist . . . .
at the end of the movie.

Welp, I watched Alien 3 tonight. I went in there with pretty low expectations. It wasn't good, but it wasn't offensively bad or anything... I feel pretty, pretty, pretttty indifferent. I didn't care for any of the Non-Ripley characters, and I had trouble identifying who was who (all shaved heads and wearing similar clothes).

I feel like this movie tried to cram in the two genres used in the prior movies (horror/thriller & action), and I don't feel like it did a very good job at either. The single alien wasn't nearly as intimidating as in the first movie due to the fact that I watched them kill hundreds in the sequel. I know they didn't have any equipment, but still.

(ending spoiler)
Her committing suicide at the end also didn't affect me since I'm fully aware she stars in one more sequel. Also, why didn't ripley just kill the alien with some of the explosives after she found out it wouldn't hurt her? Seemed like she could have walked down there with a backpack full of the stuff and just end the movie.

I'm watching the second one right now and a question popped in my head. If they have robots, why don't they just send those guys to fight the aliens instead of humans? They can take a larger beating and probably won't be able to incubate the parasites if they get captured.

Cost too much.

Because up until they enter the hive and get attacked, the Marines and the "Company" really don't believe there was an alien threat present on LV 426. That is apparent throughout the entire second movie leading up to the first hive encounter.

Also, traversing tight corridors, unknown organic materials with remotely operated robots is the opposite of tactical, and swift penetration. And the fact that the marines were trained specifically for these kinds of scenarios. The fact that such a small unit of marines were sent in the first place is a clear indication that nobody took Ripley's claim serious, whatsoever. Everything changes after the hive encounter, and later in the special edition (not present in the theatrical cut).. the marines setup UA571-C Sentry Guns in the halls outside their second stand. These sentrys rock the shit out of incoming aliens, blowing through hundreds of round canisters each.

The marines, once educated use what little technology they have left to combat the xenomorph and survive.

I don't think it's really fair to criticize the film because you watched it two decades later knowing there is another sequel. As for your question, I think the xenomorph would likely have defended itself against Ripley should she try to physically attack it or blow it and herself up even with the embryo inside her. Going in kamikaze wouldn't have fit the tone of the movie. I could see Golic doing that to stop the others, but not Ripley.

Droids aren't much more resilient than humans when it comes to the killing power of the xenomorphs.

I just got done watching Alien and Aliens, and they were both incredible. The first one was an exceptional sci/horror film and the second one was easily one of my favorite action movies. I was also surprised by how well these movies still look despite their age. They didn't look dated at all. Can't see cgi films holding up as well.

Sigourney Weaver was excellent in both of them, and I was so impressed by how strong of a character she was. I wasn't coming into the movies expecting that. If I ever have a daughter, I'm going to make sure she watches theses movies. Positive role model and what not.

So what's GAF think about these movies? Are the 3rd and 4th ones worth watching?

Well the 3rd movie is coming out this summer and we will have to see if that's sucessful to see if there will be a 4th....

Its not a bad movie, but its creatively bankrupt. Its someone just trying to redo T2. The one thing about each Alien is that they are their own vision of the universe, good and bad. T3 is a rather cheap imitation of T2.

Goddamn it Winona Ryder is so fucking cute in Resurrection.

It's an incredibly funny movie, as well. "What's burning?" "Earth." "SHIT. You're right!"

Fucking Ron Perlman.

For some reason that reminds me of something James Cameron said ...

I remember him saying that with the CGI tech used in Avatar you could "Age Back" actors to their prime and used Sigourney Weaver as an example. He said that that's part of what they did in Avatar, they made her Avatar look like Aliens Sigourney Weaver. He also said that they could make a new Alien movie starring "Aliens Sigourney Weaver" ... when I heard about this new movie I thought that that was what he was talk about until I heard it what it was about.

But after watching all of the films ... I think Ripley has done enough. They made it so that the original has died and the clone is some kinda Alien Human mix that really doesn't seem to care about killing Aliens. I like the clone ... but it's best to try to forget all about that shitty mesh od alien-human-baby thing and IDK where the clone's story would go.

Just kinda crossed my mind ... I have to wonder why he would think that would be a good idea in any way. Guess I'm reading too much into that.

Sigourney Weaver is roughly 6 feet tall, IIRC.

Man, I haven't watched these movies (well, at least any of them from start to finish in a single sitting) in about 15 years. I should probably rectify that soon. I actually am pretty hyped for Prometheus.

Paco was talking about the alien movies. I responded to him by talking about Alien 3, not Terminator 3

Watched these over the weekend again when I finally bought my Alien Anthology blu ray. Man, they still hold up soo well. Had emphasize to the wife just how important Aliens design particular was. Basically yeah, EVERYTHING took from this film.

About Terminator:

Salvation was all over the place. I would have rather them just have a movie focusing on Conner rather than the horrible plot of the quasi-terminator.

Also, I was dissapointed at the lack of directed energy weapons.

So, I watched Alien last week and I am now making my way through the special features on the Anthology disc. What a great set of special features! This is the only one I own and I'm now kicking myself for not picking up the entire anthology bluray pack in a holiday sale. Must own.

It was extremely interesting to see how the movie came together: having started as merely a b-movie, then each iconic element was added one at a time.

I can definitely get behind this opinion. I enjoyed T3 as an action movie, especially when in came out in a time of Matrix clones and CG wankery.

T4 on the other hand, made me lose respect for everyone involved. Just terrible, terrible stuff.

T2 timeline discussion was highly entertaining for me, this is an awesome thread

Team Scullibundo btw

And apparently there are people capable of hating True Lies, the world's getting crazy I tell you

I know I'm probably gonna get some hate, but I really enjoyed terminator 3... Atleast as much as the first two. Part of it may have to do with the fact I've already accepted the idiosyncrasies of the time travel in the series. Arnold had some great lines, and I laughed quite a bit at a few.

I enjoyed T3, but it's not nearly as good as the previous 2. I'd definitely recommend it

Not from me. I don't remember T3 well, but T2 at least hasn't aged well for me so i could see it being about like t3 if I were to be completely honest.

This is an unacceptable opinion. Please reconsider.
