Holy crap, PS4-Vita Remote Play is unbelievably good.

No, it'll all just be local traffic.

Sounds good. I'd been using a direct connection to my PS4 to remote play DCUO, but lately I've been getting a ton of disconnects (despite my PS4 being only a few feet away from me). Hopefully the router connection is better.

I've never though about this (i don't like the result, aesthetically)
But it could be a nice idea. Would you suggest a grip please?
Thanks.

PS Vita Assist Grip turns it into a huge awesome Dualshock! Best appearance for sure.

And you definitely lose some framerate. 60fps games clearly run a liiiiiittle bit lower. Not a lot lower, but it's noticeable. Either way it's a great feature and well executed. Far from perfect, but acceptably close enough.

some? as in 50% of the frames :D Remote play is capped at 30fps.

I love it. But I will say when I play BF it's great. NFS works great for a while, but then it starts to hang up. THEN, the video speeds up to "catch up". Does this every 30 seconds or so.

Granted, I just moved in to a new house, and am working things out, but it's more than slightly jarring. I need to do some router repositioning.

That aside though, it's freaking amazing. I am more jealous that all of you people that can use your cell phones to play it. I have the wifi hotspot, solely FOR the Vita, and it almost never connects. And when the rare time happens and it DOES connect....it's like I'm on 56k -_-

How do you guys get this to play?

I have a PS Vita and took it to my friends house which he has a PS4.

We couldn't get it to work.

Do both systems need to be signed in to one account?

More than that, the PS4 has to be your Primary. At least I can't connect it with my kids PS4, but it works great with mine.

this part i find troubling, here - i probably get 2-3 frames lag playing classic systems on my plasma + upsclaer and while that works for me on twitchy SHMUPs/fighters/rhythm games etc anywhere past that - say, PS1 discs on PS3 - pretty much breaks entries in those genres, whereas stuff like strategy, RPG's etc are perfectly fine.

did you try Resogun out of the house? maybe i'm asking too much, but while it's pretty neat indoors, if it introduces much more input lag than that, it's kind've a dealbreaker of an outside feature, for me. again, with respect to most genres, anyway. i'd be interested in details here.

Yes, I played Resogun in the car over the 4G from my phone. There was definitely noticeable latency, but I was able to mentally correct it enough to beat the first level.

I am playing AC4 right now while at work during this crazy slow slow day. Using my phone 4g connection with no really noticeable lag. I don't know guys. When I really think about it, this tech truly is amazing to me. To think just a few years ago something like this was a pipe dream. If this existed during my ps1 days...Lord have mercy on my grades in school lol.

I am seriously considering buying most of my games digital now because of this tech...

how far is your bed from the console

Maybe 30-40ft and two walls.

Get a grip for Vita. It makes the console infinitely more better to hold in longer sessions, which can also help greatly with back-touch accuracy and finding better place for fingers to relax.

I find the Vita pretty comfortable, actually. I'd only want the grip because sometimes I hit the back touchpad if I'm gripping too much.

This is fantastic, especially coming from a Nvidia Shield fan

Yeah, dude! The Nvidia Shield performs admittedly better, now that it supports 60fps, but they're almost identical in terms of latency and image quality. The Wii U is still the absolute best for latency, but both the Shield and the Vita trump it on image quality, imo.

Even faster than direct connection, that's some super router!

Glad you have it working nicely, hope to test it out myself someday. I assume you have the PS4 connected to the router via a LAN cable?

I have this router, an ASUS RT-AC66U dual band. And actually, my PS4 is connected via WiFi, which is why it's confusing that it works better through my router than with the direct connection.

One game that really blew me away on Remote Play was Skylanders Swap Force. Anyone that has played it knows that it is an extremely fun platformer and looks really colorful and crisp. On Remote Play it is perfect. It is not a game that is effected by any input lag that may be apparent (I didn't notice anything that caused me to screw up while playing). You can have the portal laying right next to you to switch out your figures and stuff. It is a really good experience on Remote Play.
Oh HELL yeah. Skylanders is awesome with Remote Play. The only issue is trying to swap out your figures if you're away from the console. I used a USB extension cable, though. Another great game for Remote Play is LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. I'll probably play that tonight with my GF in bed - I get the Vita, she gets a controller and watches the Vita. Two player portable!

Those with connection issues in other rooms in big houses, etc. You might just have to get a better wifi router. It is what it is.

Or try adjusting some settings in your router. But more than anything you might need a better router. I had no idea until one I had started going bad a few years ago, had alot of disconnection issues with it.

Did research, got what I figured was the best at a decent price... and it made my wireless connection improve almost like night n day in other rooms.

I got the Asus N56U. Before I got it...I was in an apt...I could barely use wireless on my PS3 and 360 in the bedroom...and it was a small 1 bedroom apt. The router was in the living room. And it had a furnace in the middle, which might have interfered with things.

I really hope we get an option where we can use the Vita as a pure second screen and continue to play with the DS4.

There is no real reason why this isn't an option.

I'm hoping that when Sony rolls out DS4 support for the VitaTV sometime this year that will naturally mean DS4 support on the Vita itself.

That would be amazing

I'd like to second that remote play does appear to work better if your PS4 is connected via a cable to the router instead of wirelessly, and the Vita is also connected to the router instead of the PS4. The PS4 wireless chip doesn't seem to be the best, so bypassing that gives the best responsiveness, for me at least. YMMV.

Wait until that magic moment when you get it working from work. Finally happened to me yesterday. I'd tried and tried and had no luck, but for some reason yesterday things clicked into place.

Playing Don't Starve at work on my Vita while my PS4 was 3 miles away? So much awesome.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you choose the option between direct connection and WiFi? My router is the N66U.

If you have direct connect enabled on the PS4, and the Vita can get the slightest signal, it will choose direct connect over WiFi. You need to disable direct connect if you want to reliably use wifi.

So all I need to do is disable direct connect on the PS4?

It's really not too surprising that the dedicated routers beat the internal PS4 wifi.

Anyone figure out the AirPort Extreme UPnP situation? It's hard for me to test right now.

I'm sure it works wonderfully, but what is the OP's TV display latency? It's an important metric. Pre-emptive clarification edit: A display with a higher latency will make the streaming look "better" in comparison.

Being playable is of course the more important point, and the Vita streaming seems to do just fine in that regard. Now I just need a PS4.

I agree OP, it's pretty great. I mostly use it at home when my brother wants to play my PS3, and I'll play my PS4 on my Vita in another room. I played ACIV on it and it worked pretty decently. There was some button press lag, but I adjusted to it.

My only problem is that I'm usually about 10ft away form my PS4 when I use remote play, yet it disconnects a lot. Out of my 1hr playtime of remote play, I probably disconnected about 4 times. I really hated that it disconnected in an important cutscene, but oh well.

It's not perfect, but it works.

Don't starve on Vita is awesome!

The game detects that you are connected via remote play and changes the game controls to suit the Vita's button setup...amazing!

I probably play on remote play more than a controller lately, I always play a bit in bed before I go to sleep, but I don't always play on my monitor every day. It's just so convenient to be laying in bed and get some game in on a portable device. Of course, by now I've beaten everything I have, and I don't play shooters over remote play--I have KZ Mercs if I want to fps in bed--but I play a ton of resogun and some other smaller titles.

Don't own a ps4 but I'm glad its mandatory to have remote play on every new release because remote play on the ps3 is depressing.

I find battlefield a hard game to play on the vita because there isnt any L3, R3(have to use the touch pads) and the thumbsticks are a tad small. But its manageable and still can get a few kills

I play via remote play most of the time when I game now. Love the fact that I can still play while the Mrs watches TV. Can't wait for Diablo 3 and all the other RPG's to hit the system. Also if there is one feature making me consider going digital it's remote play.

What!? That's freaking AWESOME. How much is that game?

Remote play is great but I still think the latency could be improved. If the Wii U is doing it so well why can't the PS4?

Every technical aspect of the relationship between the Gamepad and the Wii U was designed for that one interaction

So while the PS4 was designed with PSV remote play in mind and contains an encoding chip for video the playstation vita to my knowledge does not have similar hardware on it to decode the incoming stream and thus must use the rest of the system resources

What!? That's freaking AWESOME. How much is that game?

Don't Starve PS4 |OT| Free with PS+

14.99 USD if you don't have PS+

It's awesome but there are still a few issues that I hope get fixed.

1) 30fps - I said I wouldn't care much when I found out this was the case but on certain games like Fifa 14 it's very noticeable and isn't the greatest experience.

2) Latency varies - I don't get why but it does. Killzone Shadow Fall seems to have the most which makes me question why this is the case while even another shooter like Battlefield 4 has noticeably less.

interesting to consider this. i'd say it's a wash between Vita and Wii U when it comes to image quality. yes, the Vita has higher resolution AND much better contrast, etc, but the feed demonstrates much more compression artifacts than the Wii U's screen does (although the compression is apparent in the Wii U also).

I'd say IQ is equally compromised overall, albeit in different ways. For the Wii U it's more about the limitations of the screen, for Vita it's more about how degraded the video feed is.

I haven't seen remote play on the Shield yet, I'm sure between it's 720p screen and 60 fps, it's easily the best IQ wise.

Can anyone tell me how to setup the PS4/Router to use remote play on the go?

I have set up a fix IP address for my PS4 at my router and told the router to handle it as an exposed host (kind of a DMZ). So port forwarding shouldn´t be an issue. In the PS4 settings everything is checked what is necessary for remote play.

Over Christmas I was at my girlfriends place and connected my Vita to their WiFi. My PS4 at home was set to standby, with remote switch-on enabled. My Vita wasn´t able to find the PS4 at all (and yes, I already paired the systems at home)...

Any idea what else I could try?

hey wait a second....

some game even recognize that they are being played via RP and make use of the front touchscreen?

why the hell isn't that an option the home menu?
swiping those boxes around and clicking on option can't be that complicated to integrate them, no?
