hook, line and sinker.

And Borghe, I think you failed to read the first part of that post where I specifically pointed out why I felt that race inclusion (when it serves to reinforce criminal stereotypes--not when I'm saying "that black girl is cute") is a problem.

The DUDES THAT ROBBED HIM reinforced the damn stereotype. Not the OP.

The OP was more familiar with those people, so he probably didn't feel the need to describe them.

he also pointed out the guns were silver. maybe he just noticed the color details for both the men and the guns?

people aren't getting bent out of shape that he said "men" instead of "people" and saying it's a sexism issue, so why does saying "black" automatically make it a racism issue? if they would have been white and he said "white men" would it have been a race issue?

to be clear, I'm not bent out of shape about it, nor do I find anything the OP said racist... what I said earlier:

"I doubt it's outrage, but it's certainly common and annoying for the race to always be pointed out when it's a minority, like it's a distinction from the norm... nothing to do with victimizing the assailants either. But over the last ten years or so, this has changed quite a bit for the better."

all I'm saying is that's it's been annoying over the years to me when race only seems to be pointed out when it seemingly is a distinction from the norm (white). One could assume that the victims here were all white based on this, or perhaps all non-black. Could very well not be the case too. The only reason I said anything about this was really due to the seeming outrage over snakes' comment. You point about sex is interesting, and I really don't know.

So again, is the op's comments at all racist? No, but perhaps it's a bit reminiscent of much more hurtful tones and commentary that we've heard in the past. Snakes probably shouldn't have brought it up at all, but there's no harm in discussing these sorts of things.

Which could easily be chalked up tot he fact that he knows far more about his friends and could provide more specific details (nerds, drug dealers, potheads, etc.). His knowledge or masked armed robbers is limited, therefore limited the descriptors he would have had available for them.

But I'm confident that if the guys robbing him were white meth heads or Asian ninjas, race would have still been included in their descriptions. Just a hunch.

good point too

I'm only angry he couldn't come up with a metaphor or simile to get across the same idea. Blatantly describing someone as 'black' is lazy as hell. Effective, but lazy.
So next time OP should ask the robbers to hold on, so he can collect the necessary information he needs to get their ethnicity correct, so as not to offend GAF when he posts the story.

Political correctness bullshit needs to die in a fire.

you know, this PC backlash is warranted sometimes... but I really wonder how many of you actually were alive when hateful speech was an everyday acceptable thing.

No, the dudes that robbed him happened to be black. They also might have happened to wear glasses or brown shoes or levis. But those details weren't included because either a) they weren't remarkable enough (as in, "Well, how is it relevant that the guy was wearing levis? Not all levi wearers are criminals!") or b) they didn't serve to make his story's narrative more interesting (whereas including the detail "black men" was noteworthy as it makes the story either more credible or the perpetrators more menacing).

All I'm saying is that perpetuating this tendency DOES have ill effects--which is why I linked to the story about the black guys who were wrongfully convicted of a crime. Disagree all you want, be as faux-offended as you want, be as dense about it as you want, hell, call the cops--I don't give a fuck.

1. I've had this happen to a couple of my fellow dealers... One good friend of mine had 4 guys with shotguns rob him of about a pound and couple thousand dollars while his (months old) child was in the house. Begged them to just take the cash and the drugs and whatever else they wanted and just leave. Got cracked across the face with the stock of a 12 gauge for his trouble but they didn't hurt anyone beyond that. Even left his electronics and shit. Quit dealing and moved away ( to a whole new town) the very next day.

2. I've been jacked once before in my life when i was still in high school. supposed to be selling a 10 strip to some kid and he and about 5 of his friends show up at the spot. Shoulda drove away .. always pisses me off when i think about it..

3. MOVE TO OREGON, MENG!! Much more chill... never had a gun in my face, never had a home invasion and for a while even had a very Dante like settup (people would just come by as long as it was after 5:30 and before 10:00.. my working hours.. ) and enough people are growing around salem/portland that it's just not an issue anymore.

4. "put dem cameras in a box!" :lol :lol

Did your friend ever get any idea who might of rolled on him? regular customers that maybe brought a shady character by in the last 2-3 weeks? spurned chic who might hang out with these guys and run her mouth a little too much?

More like who gives a fuck, in 20 years it's going to be the same. In any country any time something like this happens they always point out the ethnicity of the individual if he is not of the same type as them. Racial equality is not going to be erased by egg shell walking pc bullshit.

well it's not that big an issue, we still haven't been told the race of the victims that I've noticed...

I've seen the light.

I wasn't going to get the lynch mob together tonight but I've changed my mind.

I blame this thread and its ill effects.

walk far enough around here and the good ol' police will remind you. well...assuming you're black. if not then i honestly wouldn't expect you to understand in the first place, and i mean that with no snarkiness at all. hell, i was casually called a nigger at the zoo last year/ the zoo! nobody expects that kind of bullshit at the zoo. but alas, this is New Orleans.

also, i knew an older kid who lived down the street from me who grew up to be cop and he said that most white people don't point out the race of white criminals and he only realized that because they'd tell you everything else about them when giving a description but race. he thought it was extremely comical. i thought it was pretty interesting.

not black, but I've been called nigger a few times. In fairness to them, we were grade school age and they probably had not encountered mexicans before since there wasn't a very significant hispanic population there at the time. I figured it'd be easier not to correct them and have them think of something else to call me.

Damn, if that happened to me id be bolting out after them with a firearm as soon as they left. Gangsta types arent the hardest to hear from a block away. Yes it might mean death or injury, but unless the situation is dealt with, it will only bring fear in the future.

You should see if you can get surveillance footage from nearby buildings, and you should also call the cops and place an anonymous tip regarding the whole situation so the crooks have some heat against them.

Not to mention that you're probably related to the guy through someone else (as these things arent random usually), so maybe asking a few hard questions to people youre not on the exact same page with would be good.

Eliminate all mentions of race in the OP. Okay, now guess the races of the characters in the story. Everyone now seems to be black, right? How does not describing the race of the robbers actually eliminate the stereotyping?

yeah, shit like that sucks no matter how many times you hear it. and then you get older and it happens and you think, "am i really going to fight this guy in the Wal-Mart parking lot?". i'm just tired of punching ignorant people in the face and risking jail time so these days i try to ignore it but....we all have a threshold, ya know?

I couldn't tell. *fixes sarcasm detector*

I think its warranted always.
If someone is racist it will show, if someone preaches hate speech it will show. We dont need to be oversensitive to everything to the point where people have to tip toe around what they say in an effort not to offend anyone.
This thread is a perfect example, the OP said black men, and fuck me if people aren't freaking out "why they gotta be black?" Its a damn descriptor. If they were white and he said white men crashed through the window no one would give a fuck.

Its not like he started cursing everyone was black or said stupid shit like all criminals are black. He just described them.

your opposite example hardly ever happens though. I don't mean white people don't burglarize... but that the descriptor is hardly ever used in the first place if a minority is not involved.

And again, I in no way feel like anything in the OP is racist...

ummmm... wow...... you may be the most racially sensitive person on the planet.

He took J to his room and took his stash, plus all the cash he had. Then as they were leaving they kept saying, "We have your IDs and phones. We know where you live. Don't call the cops. Count to 100 and don't get off the floor, because we're coming back in and we'll shoot you."

Whyt even bother to say that? They stole WEED. Of course, you aren't going to call the cops.

For real.

What the fuck, buddy?

yeah ive been robbed a couple times due to my friend dealing weed. One time I got socked in the face and my nose snapped started gushing blood everywhere and the dude took 100 bucks from me too. fucking sucked ass.

Man , best of luck. That shit sucks.

It happened to one friends, in hawaii, three Mokes Tried to take him out at his door. He turned and fought them off, so he didn't lose anything, but man was he was sketched for a while after that.

Another friend in Hawaii had some one try and rob his house( the guy thought he had a load of weed or meth), dragged him out side and pulled the trigger of a shotgun in his face, point blank.. It misfired, he grabbed the shotgun from the surprised attacker, and beat the guy to a inch of his life. I found out about it on the 10 o'clock news when I recognized it as my friends house.

Another friends didn't have it end so well. It was in Cali, and two guys barged in with guns, he was growing weed (medical) and they wanted it. To make a long story short, They threw him on the ground in his room, and tried to shoot him, but the gun jammed, he then reached under his bed and started unloading the clip. Injured the Gangster guy that tried to shoot him, but ended up killing the 19 year old in the other room from a stray bullet. The sad thing is the guy that got killed didn't even really know why he was going to this guys house in the first place, and was only there because he owed the Gangster guy money. ( My friend said the kid he was really confused when gangster started the robbery) He didn't get in trouble for the death or the shooting due to it being a robbery and all, but he still has to live life having killed a Collage kid. On top of that, now he probable has a big cali gang after him, as he has to testify against the gangster.

I guess just be happy the worst that happened was some cash and a tase. Sucks about the hawaii Id though... I lost mine 3 weeks after moving from the islands :(
