I get that, there is just something creepy in those screenshots. beautiful young faces all milling around with matching headphones. Just has a "Brave New World" quality about it. It's just a little off putting to me personally.

Dont worry about that. It will turn into a "Wild Geek World" in less than a month from the grand opening :lol

I sure hope you're right. One of the neat things about Second Life was the diversity. Fat people, old people, a demon with wings, a guy in a mega man suit. I saw some great diversity there.

I can see the merits of Home and why people are getting excited over it. The problems that I can popping up in the future is that it's going to be over commercialized with banners and everything being sponsored. Could a day come that my virtual apartment is on the 5th floor of Taco Bell Towers?

The other thing is that there is enough filth spewed out on Xbox Live, and that's just voice. When you bring in the ability to post pictures and videos I can only imagine how long it'll take until there's just porn everywhere unless some one regulates it.

Finally, I just don't see myself using it very often. Like the weather, news and internet channels on Wii. I'll check things out and mess around with it but there really isn't anything too compelling right now to keep me coming back over and over again. All I really want to do is play Playstation 3 games online with friends! That being said, I would rather Sony have something like this than nothing at all, and I can see why a lot of people are getting excited over it.

I do LOVE the youtube-esque nature of LittleBigPlanet and being able to share user created levels in a youtube organized way. I think that will create more of a community than virtual world of Home.

The stores are located in a completely different area that you zone to.

I dont' even think private homes are connected that way, let alone stores.

Also, you can only customize your private home.
Can simply stop visiting your friends' porn palace :lol

It looks like Public Places (Lobby, General Trophy Room, Cinema) are all regulated by Sony. Meaning, you won't be seeing giant hairy balls up on a wall in the Lobby. All the obscene shit will be contained to private spaces. So if you have a friend whos into squirting porn or meet up with someone you don't know who sounds shady and go to their Private Lair. Watch yo self.

Which is funny because. This will probably be the advent of the Online 3D Avatar predator :lol. Luring kids to their private spaces where its full of porn :/ Oh man, the shit will hit the fan if this happens en masse

Edit: I also hope that customization of avatars goes beyond simple threads (like jeans and a shirt...some glasses and a hat). It would be cool if we could go more surreal and get a character that looks like Kratos...or some other characters from other games.

interetsing piece about how user content will be regulated ..or not as seems the case:

sorry if old

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1040_22-6165180.html

Harrison told CNET News.com that while users will be able to design their own clothing and avatars, as well as other content--be it furniture, vehicles or the like--Sony will moderate anything meant for public spaces, most likely to ensure that Home remains a family friendly space. Content meant for private spaces will not be moderated, he added.

Now that's HOT.

I wonder how extensive the modeling tools will be to make those things.

Almost as good as Game specific items. If the game don't support it, we can make our own homage :D

Also, I remember a (was it Samsung?) demo about Face Mapping and Cell. With the HD Eyetoy, Sony may be able to pull off crazy face mapping with the right Software in Home.

Im thinking Guitar Hero 3/SingStar tournies taking place INSIDE Home. Bunch of people meet up, virtual TVs/stereos around, people start jamming/singing, crowd can listen until its their turn, or just be part of the crowd for the entire show.

Anyone?

How the MMO system will work is most assuredly like Guild Wars (I'm hearing a big frikkin duh from some people out there). You will have a ton of servers that you can change between. EU server #23, #72, US server #17, #99...etc...etc.

You look at your friendslist and you see 'Jack' located on the Central Lounge on US server #40. Take me there -> Yes.

That aspect will only be for the public spaces of course and not your apartment, gallery...etc. Basically different dimensions you change between for the public spaces (since you of course can't have a million PS3 users in one Central Lounge alone).

Also, another thing to note is that you actually move the head of your character by using the motion sensing in the SIXAXIS controller. I think that's a pretty significant little element when it comes to the community aspect. If it is outside the clothing menu that is.

I wonder if I can access GAF from Home. I want to have a marquee banner going in my apartment with the newest hilarious thread title running through. Or even have an article from my site linked in my apartment through a framed photo or a video on the TV. Guests could launch the browser and go straight to the article to check it out. :D

Judging by the types of spaces Phil talked about...GAF could probably have an official space in the Home community.

I have to say I'm very unsure as to how Sony plans on implementing this with consistent performance. I've heard plenty of issues with slow downloads from PS Store. And these are hardwire connections. Is anyone using their PS3's wifi going to even be able to effectively use the shit???? I assume they're probably figuring that out themselves. Hopefully they can pull it off.

The html streaming was only mentioned in the developer spaces part of the speech along with making their room in maya. I don't know if people should expect that in their personal area.

Somewhere he did mention that this was created with maya...so I guess it all comes down to what extent they use there skills and see which is feasible for the PS home.

Didn't Kojima do this with MGS4 at one of his previous conventions?

Looks like they are trying to bring the Sims formula to their interface. As popular as the Sims is, and things like Nintendo Miis...there is no doubt that this will be successful. This is the kind of shit people wanted to see from day one. Not ground breaking, but something you can play around with that helps you swallow that $600 price tag. Hopefully people still care about this when it finally comes out.

The little planet game is AWESOME. Hope Nintendo is keeping watch...thats the kind of shit they should have had going with their Mii avatars. People would have went crazy if they showed something like this

That's for the developer's HOME though.
It'll be nice if we actually get to make somestuff with Maya and use it

So I can invite kids back to my home and then put porn on the telly for them? Wow...

Yeah ... about that. Isn't this scenario - the one where you invite a couple of friends to your apartment, put on the latest HD episode of Battlestar Galactica and chat while you all watch it, streaming from you - a little VERY futuristic? You would need, I don't know, internet 2.0 to pull something like this off, no? I mean, it should be possible even right now, but not to the extent everybody seems to be excited about. "Man, imagine <random awesome scene that includes watching video content and a lot of people>!" Yeah, I dunno about that.

I really hope that Home takes off and keeps getting expanded by Sony, like imagine downloading Qbert or another classic game and playing it online inside of home on your tv on your tv inside of home with other people around you in your private house, or the best would be playing the downloadable PS1 games in your virtual house with other people.

Some new info from IGN:

Currently, 500,000 PS3 owners in North American have registered for the PlayStation Network, about 50% of the current U.S. installed base. After Home launches this fall, Harrison believes the number of registered online users will increase significantly.

On Pedo Bear activity:

Second Life is rampant with cheaters, sexual predators and creepy people like yourself. Home adheres to Sony's parental controls. There are several blockers that can be switched on to keep people safe from abusive gamers. In fact, you can mute anyone in Home or choose not to see their character at all. And since there is not physical interaction between characters (sorry pervs), there's no reason anyone should be able to bug you for longer than it takes to hit a button on the Sixaxis controller. Community moderators are also being hired to roam the halls and make sure gamers play nice with one another.

Servers and friends:

Beyond abuse, a common concern has been the server size of Home. While no one at Sony is giving exact numbers, there is a hardcap limit of how many can be on a server at a given time. The overflow simply spills into the next server. And yes, there is a plan for intelligent grouping so that friends stay together on the same server.

Customise the outdoors panorama view:

One cool way to upgrade your pad is by customizing the view out your window. Everyone's house has "the perfect view" so that no one is stuck looking down into an alley. However, there will be different options for what is outside your window. You may want to look out over a lake, for example. To make your lake view different than others, Sony plans to offer some extras to place in the background. You could put a boat floating out by the lake or perhaps have a flock of birds fly by in the horizon. So while many people will have the same base view from their apartment window, each can have its own distinct flare.

GR: Do you know yet how many people are going to be able to be in an apartment at once?

PH: Depends on the size of your apartment. Depends on a couple of other practical restrictions. But in the main lobbies, there's a soft cap and a hard cap. When the soft cap starts to be reached, we start spawning new versions of the lobby. When the hard cap is reached, then we max out that lobby, and it will iterate infinitely. So you can always find places to go, always people to hang out with, and we group your friends together.

GR: So no numbers on that, roughly?

PH: Inside this lobby, it's 64 is the hard cap. Inside the personal apartment, it depends on whether you're going to be streaming media to users or not, but it's obviously much less.

I wonder if Home will start to come pre-installed on the HDD. Most likely I would think, especially since the initial install is less than 500MB.

you left this important bit out.

If none of this sounds appealing, fear not. Just about everything you can do in Home can also be done through the cross media bar. It just won't look as cool.

For the complainers that think it will be too "cumbersome" to always have to meet in the virtual space.

And yes, there is a plan for intelligent grouping so that friends stay together on the same server.

Good. Someone mentioned Guild Wars as a way that this might work, but does it automatically keep you together once you are together?

For example, in home, if I'm with friends in my apartment and we decide to go bowling or whatever, we should obviously all be taken to the same public space, so I'm glad they seem to have that in consideration.

Also he notes that jumping into games from home won't be there at the start of the beta trial. It should be there when the service launches, at least, one would hope!

Wollan

GR: One question that we're all really curious about right now is, is Home going to be something where you can jump from there straight into a PS3 game? Like, can you jump into Resistance?

PH: Absolutely, yeah, that's the intention. We won't have that functionality day one in the beta trial, but it is something that we will have for the service.

So some stuff will be added across the duration of the Beta.

So Sony making a service like this with lobbies and friends and geeks, and the ability to jump into games from a geek infested room, and with the PS3 having standard harddrive, are those companies that produce MMORPGs and geek games that aren't primarily console titles going to start flocking?

The potential of this thing is massive, if it takes off.

I figured this would be the case as well, but people will question what's not laid out in plain English.

Remember people saying the PSN wouldn't be free even after it was said it would more than a few times? And even when it was clarified to be a free service, people still went on to say, "It will be free at first, then Sony will charge after a few months." =/

If it isn't laid out for any idiot to understand... you get junk like that.

Ditto.

Though they (people focusing on that comment) may be over expecting some other parts. The Trophies for example is something I only think we will see inside Home for example.

No if you listen carefully when Phil was talking about the trophy room he said the trophy room can be for private and public viewing.

To stay in the same instance maybe friends will work as a party system(but with a much better name for this service) or joe goes to sports first and the others use the psp to go to joe.

or the ultra home run achievement possibility:

Sounds like this might be a setup that uses a web of friends and if two of your buddies are in main lobby 4 you will automatically go to that specific server. or if GAF members had a secret decoder ring for example they would be more likely to end up with the other gaf members any time they go anywhere. group affiliation would work without filling up the friends list.

One cool thing I did yesterday. I visited a webpage which basically 'checks the temperature' of the internet. You have this black screen and there's hundreds, maybe thousands of particles flowing around. Each one when clicked brings up a hot hot internet story. The first one I picked up lead me straight to a story about Home. :lol
