He meant that people can visit your Trophy room in Home.

There is a Trophy icon in the XMB, just under the HOME one. There is also a star-shaped one, but I dunno what's for. I can see those in the keynote video demostration.

Oh ok. That is very nice indeed as I personally wasn't expecting it. :D

Edit: Maybe the Star one is for cinema streaming?

The exact pathway for the upgrade, how you will get the biggest space, we're not going into the details. But it will be a combination of purchasing items or unlocking items.

Im gonna buy the biggest friggin house on the internet.

Home is meant to extend the gameplay cycle and keep gamers from trading in games at local retailers. Once a game is in the used bins, publishers and developers stop making money. But with Home, gamers unlock new items for their house and character based partly on the titles they play.

was thinking about the implcations of that ..i thnk what they mean is home's exsitance offers incentive to fully play through a game.

for eg ...GTA ..instead of just of just playing through the core story line and then selling the game on ebay ..... what say through out the gameworld there are hidden icons relating to GTA-home items, you find one ..and hey presto you have a GTA sofa waiting for you back at yr home-apartment.

very cool.

i think the great thing about home is the scope, and how it can infulence the gaming side of things. you can menton 2nd life and myspace etc ..but it _IS_ an interface ... not a stand alone thing ... really genius idea. wonder who started plannng it at sony ...

For the complainers that think it will be too "cumbersome" to always have to meet in the virtual space.

I think what would help with these people is more discussion about the upcoming firmware updates. If the XMB can be accessed while playing and stuff like that then it will go a long way in taming the complainers. Unfortunatly Sony is still mum about the next big update. :/

I guess home is going to be a one of the first mainstream applications (besides bittorrent) that will need a large amount of Uploading speed to take advantage of some of the features. Just food for thought.

And it really does seem like they thought Home through. From the blocking, to the intelligent grouping. I'm also really happy to hear conformation that XMB will also gain the features that Home is getting (it was obvious that this was going to be the case though).

to be honest even I would have liked a little more info about that, but we know Sony's deal with firmware updates. install first, info later.

You don't implement Home. It is it's own separate beast and if you don't want to use it you can still use the XMB menu exclusively as you would Xbox Live for example.

The only element that needs implementation is Trophies and since you ask, that aspect is not required by them. But 99.9999% of all of them will end up using it still. Read this:

If a game fails to implement HOME. it's likely a game that involves half-hearted development and probably doesn't deserve to be played.

We've already got games (Ridge Racer, Marvel Ultimate, Virtua Tennis 3, Motorstorm) that seem pretty half-hearted in comparison to Resistance.

Looks very awesome, as if it smashes MS and Nintendo's efforts apart, its very Sims/Animal Crossing-inspired. The concept is great.

But then I thought of the people who will be using it and I wonder just how great it will be. Visit someone elses room to see how they decorated it? Sit in lobbies and chat via virtual keyboard or usb kb? or blutooth headset?

I can see this appealing to the mainstream rather than the usual hardcore, problem with Sony is, the PS3 itself only appeals to the hardcore right now. I mean you're gonna really need a headset or usb kb to get much out of this, thats a pretty dedicated set of purchases.

I dont think many of Sony's usual market will really buy into this, its quite odd from a strategy perspective, Sony are being so weird so far, like they don't know which direction they should be moving in.

yeah this is a pretty hardcore purchase . Give people a little credit, even non hardcore gamers know how to buy a cheap ass USB keyboard and connect it to their PC, so why would buying a cheap ass USB keyboard and connecting it to a PS3 be any different?

Same with a headset. I don't see anyone having a hard time connecting a basic head set to their cell phone, Xbox Live, etc etc...

You watched the demo video, right?

Communication is key in home, so we've included loads of simple ways to get to know people.

Emotes are animations that get your point across fast.

You can access short phrases using QuickWrite, or if you have something big to say, you can type with a virtual or USB keyboard - or talk with a bluetooth headset.

So, again, methods to communicate are:

* Emotes
* QuickWrite (short phrases you string together)
* Virtual keyboard
* USB keyboard
* Bluetooth headset

I think you can get plenty out of this without buying an accessory.

And what's to stop Sony from bundling a headset at some point down the road?

So I finally got to watching the actual keynote. I was impressed with it by the trailer but after watching the keynote I'm really blown away. It looks amazing, so far beyond any other effort it's incredible to think that it's Sony doing this. The same Sony and their Network Adapter.

Everything is well integrated and well thought out as well. Just the seamlessness of being able to chill in the lobby, go play some pool, or bowling on the fly. All the customisation options for your apartment, the theatre could be expanded to something incredible. I even loved the trophy room, which was much better intergrated than I expected having just watched the trailer. And the community, third party spaces were most impressive of all - the ideas with little trailers running and mini games intergrated to give you a taste. Really brilliant. Heck, I even like the advertisements everywhere, they look real nice. There's so much that's great that I'm not even mentioning because it seems like such a fleshed out, well rounded product.

I think this could be one of the biggest potential killer apps PS3 could've EVER been blessed with. And it's bloody free. Insane. A bloody brilliant concept, I personally am buying a PS3 for this. No reservations, I know it'll be huge.

Apologies for coming off like one of the "1000", I'm just thoroughly impressed :D

EDIT: Somebody link me to the thread when this was a Kotaku rumour. I don't think anybody envisioned something of this scope

I admit it looks nice and slick, but the idea of stocking my virtual ultra-modern style house with Ikea furniture while wankers are dancing terribly on my patio is not appealing. I feel a generation gap coming on....

er...I know a usb kb etc is easy to get hold of and maybe even cheap, but who actually does that with a console? not the typical ps2 user thats for sure.

I saw the video and it was like "wow thats awesome" but then I imagined how I might use it, and its like....hmm....not so much.

What a stupid argument, if they're having trouble communicating they'll plug in their PC keyboard. And bluetooth headsets are incredibly easy to find, I would hardly call that a "dedicated purchase"

Are you saying that most PS2 users don't have keyboards attached to their PC at home? Also, you should be able to use those Bluetooth headsets lots of people use with their cells. Its very flexible

I think inviting your mates around for online chat while listening to some tunes is alright, with the football highlights on in the background would be good.

That's actually a slight problem. Because of Sony's idiocy, hardly anyone has a headset or a keyboard because it doesn't come with any SKU's of the console. I know I sure as hell won't spend anytime chatting through their controller input system if it is anything like the bullshit input system they have now. And emotes/canned phrases gets boring almost instantly if that is the sole method of communication. Hopefully they get smart and include some of this with the console (keyboard or headset) when this finally gets released. Since they probably wont want to price drop the system any time soon, it should be easy to instead add more value by including some accessories with the $600 version

I basically agree with the need to push headsets around so everyone has one. Sony does need to actually inform people that the system supports almost any USB/BT headset (even the EyeToy built in mic), but I can see how they not really caring that much at the moment since the PS3 is still targeted to the hardcore audience (the majority of which knows about that).

A huge "GET A ****ING HEADSET NOW YOU IDIOT!!" billboard in the HOME public lounge would be nice tho.

I really think they should develop a cheap wired headset that plugs into the controller USB port, pack it in, and send everybody who registers their system a free one.

I am so excited for HOME! I want it now! Im getting a PS3 in 2 weeks and HOME is one of the reasons (and FFXIII, of course). OH YEAH!

You can tell Sony was working on this for a lil while... it seems a bit more fleshed out than your average rushed out concepts... I think it's a great feature, and I honestly can't see why anyone would complain since it's free, you can still access stuff quickly via XMB so you don't always need to use it if at all, and it's free... Anyone that seriously "complains" about it is packing an agenda...

I feel the same, and oh Sony bring LittleBigPlanet as fast as possible. :x

But I guess they are really buggy atm.

Wait ... what? :lol

What other systems come with a keyboard or headset?

Also, to say few people own a USB keyboard or BlueTooth headset is a bit ridiculous. I'm guessing a fairly high percentage of PS3 users already have one or the other available (especially keyboards).

The fact that Sony has pretty good driver support for products people already own should be commended. You would rather they didn't offer open support and instead gouged us on peripherals?

huh?

Just saw the GDC Home presentation and I think I'll approach it more as a game, a sort of playground than a way to navigate.

Really? Didn't know that ... that's pretty cool.

Is it a wireless headset, or wired?

The headset that comes with the system is wired, but I'm pretty sure they came out with a wireless headset recently, but that has to be purchased separately. A headset coming standard with the system really does add to the online experience (or detracts, depending on the person behind the headset in question), I'd have to say over half the random people I come across on live use a headset.

A star has been used for bookmarks/favorites on windows for some time. That's my guess, that it's a shortcut menu to various locations in Home, with the othe icon taking you to the default starting point. PEACE.
