How 2014 Japanese games sold on Steam

Great sales all around really, but DS2 in particular is amazing. Probably one of the most successful Japanese single player games on PC ever?

60k aint bad for Ikaruga, considering multiple factors.

that's actually very good for an old shmup. a lot of newer shmups don't even get those numbers.

It should have easily matched its porting costs and, to my knowledge, it hasn't had a lot of sales either.

Not enough frothing demand.

It would've sold so much more had it not lost the 75% off vote in the last summer sale :(

Great sales for ports.

Some sales are definitely comparable to what you would get on the japanese market.

Not bad, this year should be interesting too, already a bunch of stuff coming over. Hoping more japanese indie devs come over due to localizers like Playism and Rockin Android.

I wish we had these broken down by revenue but of course publishers will never share those numbers. Like it's amazing that MGR sold 400k copies on steam, but I bet a lot of those were at a massive discount. I think I'm one of many who took advantage of the 12 dollar sale or whatever it was

Didn't the Ys series sell pretty well on Steam? I know they were mentioning developing more for the pc since they sold well.

Whatever it costs for Japanese devs to port/localize games to steam...they will easily make that money back and than some. Its really a no-brainer to port more over. Those who don't are only losing money.

So FROM must be weeping about Bloodborne exclusivity right around now right?

Thats almost a million sales they are letting go by not releasing on PC.

Because it only from those with public ID, it could be lower than actual sales. Still it gave some portrayal though. VC 200k? It can be higher. It should be higher.
I wonder how Nep Rebirth do.

Even if you take opportunity cost into account... there's no reason to NOT do that.
These ports are usually a 3-5 man job for the biggest titles.

You have to actively turn on privacy, so I'd imagine the vast majority.

:)

Those are great numbers for One Way Heroes and such, shows what happens when the price is right. Hopefully their profits were good in turn as well

Yeah, that seems very impressive. I was expecting it to be at the top of the list, but not to sell that much.

Bandai and From have a lot to thank Durante for.

I like to think I played a tiny little part as well, making the Dark Souls to PC petition thread here on GAF. Incredible how that online campaign was not only successful in its immediate goal, but helped start a wave of Japanese PC game support in general.

Half Minute Hero 1 and 2 not on the list :(
The fact that Half-minute Hero 2 was missing probably means we don't want to know how much it sold. Shame, because I had a good time with it.

Glad to see Valkyria Chronicles was able to squeeze out another 200k. It was a late port in a niche genre, so the port quality and clever pricing paid off.

Yeah, going from the series looking like it would never see the light of day on PC to that is pretty awesome. Nice work. :P

VC literally came out at the end of the year with barely any advertising outside of people going nuts on Twitter. It did pretty well considering that fact.

We should really consider tweeting this list to the PR accounts of some Japanese publishers. It might give some people who are willing to push for some franchises getting localized & ported over here some ammo to sway the stodgy execs.

I wonder how Nep Rebirth do.

I was most interested in this but forgot it wouldn't be counted for 2014. Hoping IFI gets enough money/interest to start localizing non-game merch and fully voice acting all future Neptunia games. I don't understand how the spinoffs are fully voiced and reb 1 is 80% silent, reb 2 40% silent. Also gonna need better limited editions

Some more info about the numbers.
How accurate are your numbers?

Since publishing, we've had a few more developers reach out either privately or publicly to offer their own Steam sales data for comparison to our estimates. With over a dozen "real world" spot checks in hand now, we have yet to see an instance where the error in our numbers is more than 10 percent off from the actual numbers developers have access to. Sometimes our error is much less than that, of course, and the error can go in either direction (though so far our numbers seem to over-estimate slightly more often than under-estimating).

While 10 percent isn't a small functional margin of error, it's also much better than a simple shot in the dark guess. If we're reporting sales of two million units for a game, you can be pretty confident the actual sales number is somewhere between 1.8 and 2.2 million.

Ikaruga hasn't seen a major sale AFAIK and it hasn't been bundled. Steam-gaf has been frothing at the mouth for it to see a decent discount again, there are plenty of interested potential buyers for it.

That drop-off from FF13 -> FF13-2 is pretty significant.

Will it impact the chances of LR:FF13 releasing on Steam?

FFXIII-2 also had to suffer from the fallout of FFXIII's port being garbage quality at launch. They fucked it up.

Sweet. The great fanbase for the Souls games has always been a factor in their success.

I think that's to be expected. It matches what happened with the game on other platforms where it went from like 7+ million LTD to 3.5-4 million LTD to 1 million LTD with LR.

I'm super happy with these numbers. Most of these games are great and I hope this leads to more Japanese console games to be ported to PC!

It's the same drop FF13 -> 13-2 seen on consoles. It would be stupid if they cancelled LR after announcing it.
I don't think LR release will be affected, but I do think that the drop off might have more to do with the bad port of 13 rather than the "bad rep" of 13.

I can't believe Dark Souls 2 is at the million mark. That's insane. I haven't heard of PC sales anywhere close to that in years. Wow.
