Roger Deakins not returning with Mendes to shoot the next Bond film may have been shitty news, but goddamn if this isn't a really good replacement:

In Contention reports that Hoyte van Hoytema will be the cinematographer on Bond 24, marking yet another fantastic notch in what’s becoming a heck of a run in the director of photography’s career. The Dutch-Swedish cinematographer first came to prominence for shooting the original Let the Right One In, going on to do equally arresting work on films like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and last year’s Her. Most recently, though, he nabbed his most high profile film to date as Christopher Nolan hand-picked him to replace his longtime collaborator Wally Pfister on the upcoming Interstellar.

Tapley adds that, while unconfirmed, he’s hearing that Bond 24 will be shot on film after going digital (to astounding results, mind you) on Skyfall. Hoytema obviously shot Interstellar on film and did wonderful work on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in the format as well, but he shot Her digitally with the Arri Alexa so he’s really proven that he can capture amazing images either way.

God I find his movies so boring. Please just bring back the Casino Royale director and scrip writers.

Wouldn't mind another Martin Campbell Bond film since he directed GoldenEye as well. Although his last film was Green Lantern, which didn't go down very well.

The same two script writers (with various different co-writers) worked on The World Is Not Enough through to Skyfall. Same writing team behind Skyfall is behind Bond 24.

I knew that surname seemed strange.

Anyway, this a damn good replacement. My hype has been restored.

Hopefully it will have a better story/villain than Skyfall

i liked the villain, just didn't like that shitty plan of his or much of the plot in the film. everybody trying to copy joker da gawd from tdk.

but if anything skyfall gave us one of the quintessential bond moments:

swagged out even in pursuit.

Oh that shit was so good. I get some people may not like Skyfall, but man am I all in on how they handled Bond. Too much swag, man

His work is good but Deakins is better. Interstellar looks fantastic and Her was great. I found Tinker, Tailor to be...odd. There were some really bad slow zooms and pans in Tinker Tailor.

Tinker Tailor is gorgeous. Its look is definitely the best thing about it.

I'm so happy for Hoytema's continued international success (even if it means that he won't shoot as much Swedish stuff) but every time he signs up for one of these big budget projects I'm reminded that Tomas Alfredson's The Brothers Lionheart is stuck in development. And then I get sad.

Interesting that they went back to films seeing as Skyfall was touted as a digital highpoint.

I do hope Hoyte keeps filming for Nolan, definitely upgrade. You can take issue with whatever you want with Intertellar but photography ain't one.

Well cinematography was probably the strongest part of Interstellar so he's a great choice.

Skyfall was a gorgeous movie so I'm curious to see how the next one stacks up.

Hoytema elevates any material he's given. If we don't get Deakins, this is honestly the next best choice possible.

Deakins and HOytema are both world class, Skyfall was very pretty - its problems were script-related.
