Boourns. He was the only one in the Mendes/Logan trio I thought was really worth bringing back.

After some wavering, Mendes and Skyfall screenwriter John Logan agreed to direct and write the next Bond film, respectively, but In Contention’s Kris Tapley took to Twitter today to break the sad news that Deakins will not be back as cinematographer. Hit the jump for more.

Tapley gives no reason for Deakins not returning for Bond 24, but one imagines scheduling is the likeliest culprit as Deakins is, deservingly, one of the most in-demand talents in the film industry. The cinematographer’s commitment to Skyfall prevented him from shooting Inside Llewn Davis for longtime collaborators The Coen Brothers, so maybe they’ve already snatched him up for their next project? I’m reaching for a silver lining here. After Skyfall, Deakins handled the photography for last fall’s Prisoners and he just finished shooting Angelina Jolie’s next directorial effort Unbroken, which finds the cinematographer capturing World War II POW camps in Japan.

Just lost interest in the next Bond film then, Deakin's work on Skyfall was pitch perfect.

For a moment, when I saw the thread title, I thought this thread was about a Bond TV series shot in the format of 24.

Fuck. This was the main reason I wanted Mendes back.

Damn, Skyfall looked epic like all his work. I still have faith he'll take the academy award for Prisoners next month, never going to happen but ..

Disappointed indeed. Though if Transcendence flops at the box office I would be happy with Wally Pfister being a potential replacement.

That's disappointing, Skyfall is perhaps one of the best shot action movies of all time. Hopefully they get someone worthy in his place.

True that. I enjoyed the film when I saw at that the cinema with some friends, but afterwards the more I thought about it the less it made sense and the bigger and bigger the plot holes became. I think the cinematography was what made it more so than the story line.

Holy shit, that's really bad news.

The cinematography on Skyfall is nothing short of amazing. Love those Shangai scenes.

I was just talking about this dude yesterday with my roommate and how awesome Skyfall (and all of Deakins' films) looks. Shame.

Just looked his IMDB page and he has 11 nominations but hasn't won a single oscar.

Hopefully he wins for Prisoners.

Deakins was a big part of why Skyfall was so good. Back to Bond movies looking like low-rent crap.

That sucks. I enjoyed Skyfall a lot. Didn't know it was looked down on in these parts. Hmm.

Oh it starts well enough, and Javier Bardem is a funky villain, but given his entire play is all about confronting M for her crimes, you have to wonder why the necessity to go to such elaborate lengths given Bond proves pretty early on in the film how easy it is to break into her house undetected. Given Judy Dench unfortunately is suffering from a degenerative eye disease it's understandable that they felt the need to replace her and Fiennes seems like a good choice, but hanging the entire story-line around the villain seeking revenge on M was a daft plot tbh.

He wasn't simply trying to assassinate her. He's still a Bond villain, there's theatricality. Name one single scheme from any damn Bond film that wasn't "daft" by the standard of realism.

It's a top-3 Bond film with a bullet IMO. Glad Mendes is back, but sad about Deakins. Skyfall was one of the best looking movies of all time.

So playing to a well worn trope is somehow a good thing?

It's not about the relative daftness of the plot (yes they are all far fetched), it's about the relative daftness of the stages of the plot that's the issue. Think about the long winded route events took from the beginning of the film through to Silva attempting to assassinate M at the hearing, and realize that that was his intention. The whole crazy enterprise only works on the basis of absolute certainty as to the outcome at every stage (including him gambling that Bond wouldn't just double tap him at the first opportunity).

There's a good break down of various problems the film has here: -

I don't necessarily concur with all of them, but it does highlight a lot of the films plot frailties. Still a better film than Quantity of Sausages, but not as good as Casino Royale bar the excellent Cinematography by Mr Deakins.

C'mon now. The cinematography in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace wasn't Deakins-tier (fuck, what is) but they were very nicely shot films. Not even remotely in the realm of low-rent crap.

Quantum was EDITED terribly, but the photography was solid.

Besides, you think Mendes is going to go from Deakins to whoever it is shooting Agents of SHIELD or whatever? Mendes cares more about how his movies look than to hire a guy who's going to give him flat, lifeless imagery.
