So I was outside all day on a 10 hour hike yesterday and I've woken up this morning with my arms and neck red raw. Now admittedly I burn very easily because I'm pale as a motherfucker but this is a first even for me. I literally was not in direct sunlight the whole day! Maybe it tried to peak it's head out from behind the clouds a few times but 99% of the time it was completely covered.

So I guess this is a thing that can happen? Do I need to start wearing sun cream every day of my life just in case?

You're supposed to wear sunscreen all day everyday regardless of weather, even in the winter. Most people don't.

I put sunscreen on my face, neck, and arms everyday even in the dead of winter. You're supposed to reapply throughout the day as it wears off every 2 hours but I haven't found a good way to reapply sunscreen over makeup without messing everything up so I don't.

As a fellow pasty white person sunscreen is just a fact of life. Clouds don't block all UV radiation, wear the sunscreen.

The song "My Girl" is surprisingly scientifically accurate.

But yeah, cloud cover isn't 100% protection from UV rays.

Sun rays go through rain and cloud. It's UV radiation.

Any dermatologist will tell you that you should be wearing sunscreen anytime you spend time in the sun. Sun damage is the thing that makes you look old as you age (along with genetics) and every sunburn multiplies your risk of skin cancer.

More people should know this.

Welp, now I know lol. Given this newfound knowledge of UV rays im genuinely surprised this have never happened to me before

You're still getting sun damage.

Yeah I likely am. :( I need to get better about wearing sunscreen, but I grew up in the times of 'only wear it if you burn' so I never developed the habit. Grew up in the desert, worked in fields on 115 degree days, etc...likely too late for me anyhow.

Sounds like a lot of people are on BIG SUNSCREEN's payroll here.

I had a cancerous mole when I was little most likely from many sunburns. Wear sunscreen probably.

A friend swore that you got worse sunburns when it was cloudy out. I never looked into it to see if it was true.

UV rays go through clouds. Temp and weather doesn't really matter when it's day light and if you are doing outdoor activities wear a sun screen always. My friend is also white as fuck and got sun burned in Jan and our winters are cold and dark.

I made the mistake of not wearing sunscreen at the beach on a cloudy day. Epic sunburn, with nasty blisters. I couldn't believe it when it happened.

Its the first advice I give to tourists I meet who've come to Australia.

Do not muck around with the sun here. Its viscious and will burn in half an hour if your skin can't handle it. I've burnt before 11am.
