I just played Horizon Zero Dawn and...wow | Impressions Thread

MGSV movement was too arcadey not really realistic, from what it looks like the fluidity looks between Witcher 3 and MGSV in the middle
Yeah those 60 fps really made the game feel arcadey ;) Gotta love those realistic 30 fps!

Edit: Might have read too much into this post.

About Quests
6. How Expansive Is the Non-Linear Story?
"In addition to the main quest, every tribe has got its own story arc, and within each tribe you're going to meet a ton of people who have self-contained stories, but each one of those is a story," said Gonzalez. "The side quests are definitely not just throwaway content. Then in addition to that there will be just activities, smaller things that you can do that aren't as narratively intense, but they round out the experience. So there's a ton of content."

A big way that the lore feels natural within the story is the believable interactions between Aloy and NPCs, and I was impressed with how the acting and writing even with characters as result-oriented as merchants made them feel like real people within this world. "We've tried to make sure those interactions feel human," said Gonzalez. "We've tried to make sure that the quest that you're going to experience has actual dramatic arcs that really build and pay off, and there's some real emotion to it, and nothing that feels like, you know, FedEx, completely just busywork."

My biggest fear at this point is that the game will be ruined by stupid open world tropes. Everything else looks fantastic. Fingers crossed.

Yeah if GG get the open world RPG aspect of this right then it could be really fucking special. Everything we've seen so far would suggest this is going to be a huge game.

I main hope for this game is it somehow scratching that monster hunter itch.

I am getting it either way though looks amazing.

I think this game looks great but if you think they will be the first game to avoid the inherent problems with open world games you're not being realistic.

Based on previous released the best thing possible in this genre is that you meet The Witcher 3 in world building and quests (very high bar) but with better gameplay (not as high a bar.)

I HAVE to know! The melee combat in this game is my biggest concern, well not really concern, just what I'm most curious about. Can we expect some Nioh/Dark Souls/Dragon's Dogma level melee combat or are we stuck with some forgettable melee that pales in the face of the archery? Really hoping that melee combat is a big focus, along with a decent amount of weapons.

If anything, given that this is GG's first open world game, one might be fair to actually expect some open world problems that more experienced open world devs already faced.

Granted, being that this is new territory for GG, they did bring something from their previous expertise into the genre, aka "combat systems that looks like it isn't terrible or boring"

The main weapon is the bow.

She has a Slinghsot and spear was well so far but dont go and expect anything like Dark Souls.

It would be wise of you to temper your expectations because it's very likely to be the latter based on what we've seen.

You'll only have yourself to blame if you go in expecting that level of depth in melee. The focus is on archery.

I was just talking about ceiling.

I think seeing a new game in that genre and thinking it's going to be better than the best game in that genre is not a reasonable expectation.

What is good that the hands-on controller impressions from the fights is quite positive, which is something that many other open world action RPGs struggle with. (Albeit at the expense of build variety.)

Don't expect any of that.

the fact that your asking them to put as much depth into the melee as a souls game is unreasonable, because this is an archery game

I'm not asking them to do that, I was just curious. I personally don't think that that's a tall order to fill: to have both great shooting and melee combat. Regardless, this is and has been my most anticipated game since its unveiling and finally getting so enlightenment on the melee component hasn't lessened that. It was just a hope.

I personally don't even know how you would handle the two fights they showed off of the game with melee.

Souls and Ni-Oh certainly wouldn't be able to handle the precision that was displayed.

Right, but you were asking if it would be comparable to those other games you mentioned. It can have good/great melee in its own right but I think melee on par with Souls and what not is asking too much for a game where melee isn't the focus.

Then how about they show off one of those quality quests? Because all I've seen so far essentially boiled down to shooting glowing circles in slow-motion and trapping robotdinos. Maybe I missed some footage.
The quest was to find out about that infected robot. You're talking about gameplay.

GG nailed that so far in the future looks, it looks familiar yet strange at the same time the mountains, trees positioning, rocks, all that.

Very beautifull stuff.

Literally nothing they've shown has suggested the melee combat will have anywhere near the depth or complexity of those games, so if you really have any expectations like this then you only have yourself to blame.

Melee felt good for what it is, which is a complementary and simple form of combat to add up to the archery, wich clearly is the focus. The spear is also the way to make stealth attacks and such.

As other have said, dont go in expecting souls depth or style of melee combat

Was talking about the animations and controls. For example Wither 3 has two movement settings one normal and the other called Alternative, the normal is rigid but more realistic movement while Alternative sacrifices more realistic movements but makes it slightly more fluid and precise

I'm sure that's how most people read your post, including myself.

Sometimes people just see something they can't put into boxes and they revert to one of their goto phrases which in the case of takriel seems to be some kind 30 vs 60 fps thing.

I see the GAF hype train is once again going at full steam ahead...

Hate to be the party pooper around here, but if there is one thing this gen taught me, is to hold a small basket and manage my hype levels...

Too many highly hyped games have bombed this gen, and each and every one of them "sounded fantastic" before release.

But a lot have met or exceeded the hype, so just go with your gut.

I am not hyped for any game after MGSV. I am just looking forward to playing it. But everyone should have right to be hyped for a game, even if it ends up disappointing.
