I kinda hope the Mario popularity crashes soon

Maybe if the thread title had been less trollish, the thread might have been better...

Imagine if one of Nintendo's A teams was given a AAA budget to produce a brand new 3-d plaformer without having to worry about putting in the mario aesthetic/music etc. Would that not be really really exciting? More exciting than any new 3-d mario platformer?

Probably not for everybody, or even most people. But I'd be really excited about it. What art style would they use, what tone, what music? The unknown factor would make me buy a new console day one and avoid coverage so I could see it with new eyes.

It won't happen though, because aaa 3d platform games are expensive, and Mario in the title ensures maximum sales.

Sure, Super Mario Bros broke ground. What new grounds did Mario 2 and 3 break?

Because I'm almost certain that if you present for them, I could then turn around and make a similar arguement for how 3D Land arguably broke ground as one of the first modern games to successfully integrate 3D into gameplay.

3D land is a well crafted game, but it is a mario 64 clone afterall. I am just saying that Mario 1, 2usa and 3 each brought something gamers were not used to back in the days.

Does someone have the list of all the new IP's or IP's that are not Mario that Nintendo have created since the gamecube years? I'm pretty sure is more dirversed than Sony and Microsoft IP combine...

Pretty much. Nintendo shakes it up ALL THE TIME. Even their new Nintendo-focused IPs (Mario & Luigi, WarioWare, Luigi's Mansion) have been completely new and unique.

SMB3 broke a lot of ground. It brought new powerups besides the fire flower. It brought a world map. It brought new bosses other than the same bowser drawbridge. It brought the Koopalings.

I agree with the OP, but your mileage may vary. It's one reason why I don't buy Nintendo consoles anymore. I'm sick to death of Mario and company.

What? If you don't like it don't buy it. There are loads of games that aren't Mario and it's childish to avoid a console because of one franchise.

EDIT: oh my gosh. Did someone just call 3D Land a Mario 64 clone? Is this real life?

it's a sad present we live in unfortunately, people just don't take risks in supporting unproven IPs any longer...

That's fine but it's just overwhelming how we got so many mainline Mario games in such a short period of time. Galaxy 2, NSMBWii, Mario 3D Land, NSMB2, NSMBWU all one after the other. The release of a Mario game should be like an event!
The first six main mario platformers came out in a five year span.

I would be fine with Nintendo having new characters headline new games in the place of a couple Mario releases annually. I'd also be okay with the sports titles taking a more Smash Bros-like approach and being just Nintendo Tennis/Golf/Basketball instead of Mario-specific.

I would not, however, enjoy 3D Mario or the Mario and Luigi series getting benched, because those are awesome. M&L also doesn't have the same overall feel as the platformers--characters have personalities!

Same thing happens in movies.

I've found the best media for risk taking is original content for some American pay tv networks. Breaking Bad, Deadwood, & Game of Thrones were all new, super expensive to make, and really fantastic. I wish there was something equivalent in the gaming world.

Pixar used to be great at new ip/story ideas as well before Disney bought them and Jobs died.

Regarding 2D Mario platformers...

Then

7 releases in 7 years

1. 1985 - Super Mario Bros.
2. 1986 - Super Mario Bros. 2
3. 1988 - Doki Doki Panic "Super Mario Bros. 2"
4. 1988 - Super Mario Bros. 3
5. 1989 - Super Mario Land
6. 1990 - Super Mario World
7. 1992 - Super Mario Land 2

Now

5 releases in 7 years

1. 2006 - New Super Mario Bros.
2. 2009 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii
3. 2011 - Super Mario 3D Land
4. 2012 - New Super Mario Bros. 2
5. 2012 - New Super Mario Bros. U

Dat 2D Mario saturation.

Funny because Sticker Star is now the best-selling Paper Mario game in Japan, same with 3D Land and every other 3D Mario game. Oh and Mario Tennis Open sold more than the GBA version too.

You are and will continue to be sad, while millions of people are enjoying their Mario games. :(

Marios universe lends itself to be bended and changed, it's never a restriction at all, and that is so easy to see just by noticing how different Mario 64, Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy are.

Putting 3D Land in this list is disingenuous. It does not play like the other four games at all.

Yeah that's why I jumped from Nintendo to Sony during the PS2 era. Tired of the same characters and aesthetic over and over again from Nintendo. Other than MGS, my favorite franchises the past 2 gens are new ips.

It's to counter the people saying "LOLZ Doki Doki Panic is totally not Mario GUYZ."

I know exactly how 3D Land plays. But it's not exactly a "3D Mario game," and it has a lot of conventions from the 2D Mario titles, so I'm just going to run with it.

For me, if my problem is "Mario platformers are stale," I think I'd probably want something else other than just a new aesthetic with new characters. If I'm clamoring for the Mario team to do something else, I would attack it from the perspective of wanting a completely different style of game from them in demanding something fresh. I probably want to see what they do if they're not making a platformer at all.

But that's just me. I don't personally see what value making what would otherwise be Super Mario Universe be an entirely new setting with new characters brings to me.

Actually, if you are going for 2D mario, 3Dland doesn't count and it drops to 4 2d platformers in 7 years :V

They probably created more, but they just don't stick around and/or Sony completely abandons them. i.e. Jak and Daxter, Ape Escape, Parappa etc.
You know, for as grief as JRPG fanatics give Nintendo over the treatment they give their few JRPG properties, Sony's list of IPs is a fucking graveyard for their JRPGs.

And for a whole lot of other properties.

and 5 years from now it's probably still going to be 5 releases unless we get a second 3D Land game on the 3DS.

I think Sony's last published traditional JRPG was Jeanne d'Arc for the PSP...back in 2007.

He also doesn't mention that those games are spread across four systems. Out of those 5 games only 2 are on the same system, and they're completely different games.

Remember all the times that people said its stupid to launch a Nintendo console without a Mario game? Well now appearantly that's too many.

Mario games are so popular because some of them are pretty awesome, it's only logical that people want more and will buy more. For example I wouldn't care so much if the Galaxy games but they were soooo gooooooood.

Am I the only one who hasn't heard of half of those games (some are more like apps) on that big list of newly created Nintendo ip?

Most of those games are stuff you would have heard of if you paid any attention to what was coming out for Nintendo systems. I'm pretty sure a similar list from Sony would evoke the same reaction from people that don't keep up with them.

I don't get this.

I mean, I suppose there's something of an argument to be made with the "New" series, as I feel like the release of two of those games in such a short time period probably wasn't the best idea.

But honestly, Mario games are super solid. The fact that there's a cast of characters in them that are used frequently should be the least of anyone's concern. Further, people are actually UPSET about more Mario RPGs?

He's a cultural icon, and is NEVER. GOING. ANYWHERE. Ever. Unless Nintendo folds,
They won't
you will see Mario in some format until you die. In fact, he will outlive you.

And people who have fun with Mario games will be just fine with that. :)

new super Mario bros
new super Mario bros wii
new super Mario bros U
new super Mario bros 2

This version of Mario is defiantly showing fatigue, after playing the original DS version I've had my fill on this type of Mario game.

It was fun at first but then grew tedious

but it sells so what the hell do I know, but then again call of duty sells and people claim that is a fatigued franchise as well!

We are only counting 2D Mario, and why? There weren't exactly any 3D marios during the 80s and early 90s. Seems like an unfair comparison to me.

As I said in my previous post, the third and fourth games are pushing it, but the previous games in the series had three years between them until just last year. And while the basic mechanics are the same, they aren't the same game. It's not like the whole Arkham situation. I do feel a difference playing each of those games.

With that said, this series DOES need to take a break as far as main series releases. The DLC doesn't count, but we need another two to three years before another "New" Mario game is released.

They've been releasing tons of Mario games since the GameCube era. There are probably 20+ Mario games on the GameCube alone. GBA got a ton too. You only notice them more now because they're not fleshing out their catalogue with their other franchises like Wave Race, F-Zero, etc.

Its not that there is not variety in mario titles, its just the ''new super mario bros'' games have grown stale not really innovating like the other mario titles.

To me its seems there just doing what activision are doing with cod , a game thats not really progressing on innovation but just being released taking advantage of the millions of people who will buy a very similar game again and again.

its a good and bad thing depending how you look at it

ITT: people that dont own a Nintendo system like to talk about how tired a franchise that they don't even play is. Real cute.

Also, it's the goddamn year of luigi.

Mario has been trucking along for decades and it ain't gonna stop.

Hell Sonic is still popular even though most of his recent games are turds.
