I popped in NFL 2K5 just now

Such great times never to be had again. I remember when these guys first launched on Dreamcast. I spent a whole lunch hour staring at the screen through Software etc [Now gamepoop] store window lol. It was love after that. I think my brother still has our copy. Thx for roster link.
When I reviewed 2k1 for a website I worked for back in 2000, I scored it a 9.8/10. I fucking loved that game.

Do the roster updates include updated playbooks, or would you have to do that yourself? Is it even possible to switch around the playbooks? I know you couldn't make plays or anything, but it seems like I remember there being some option to choose from a selection of pre-made playbooks.

Was the PS2 version inferior to the Xbox version or something? I had both 2k5 and Madden 05 for PS2 and thought Madden was way better that year except for a couple of 2k5 modes.

I owned (and still do) both versions and I think the only differences were better texturing on the uniforms and field and full-motion highlights at half-time and for post-game (Xbox version, obviously).

But I agree with the OP. 2K5 was great and I still play 2K8 with friends nearly every weekend. It just feels like I'm more in control compared to the sluggishness of Madden (I bought 09 for PS3 and 360 and it disturbs me that I paid so much for games I rarely play).

Yes the textures and lighting were better for the Xbox version of 2k5, but a PS2 with the HDD could also play the video highlights.

I never really liked the 2k series as far as gameplay. Maybe I was used to Madden, but the overall presentation was much better in 2k5. The game that stands out to me the most was NFL Gameday.

If that shit doesn't get you jacked up to play football then you shouldn't be playing football games!

BTW NFL is dumb as shit. They could have 5 NFL games and I would prob buy the top 3 maybe 4.

For the first couple of years, Gameday was fucking phenomenal. And then, sadly, it turned to crap.

Now, if you really want to go back in the day, I'll argue til the day I die that the first couple of years of NFL Quarterback Club on the SNES was just as good as Madden was at the time, but that's probably a discussion for another day/thread/whatev.

Ugh, 2K5 was such crap.

Madden 2006 (Xbox) still remains the best football game ever!

Damn shame it isn't BC with the 360.

While I agree next gen Maddens have been average at best for the most part, I don't get why so many people loved 2K5. The game controls like ass, there is no QB Spy and the run game is broken. Not to mention the franchise was laughably bad with its progression, even worse than next gen Madden's have been. If the game had retailed for $50 I doubt it would have had half as many fans.

It's the year 2009 and Madden players still think dropping back 15 yards and throwing every pass off the run is "sim". :lol

And 2K5's no QB spy, turn on a dime route running and floaty football is realistic passing? That coupled with the "Jam Y over and over" run game must make it the most realistic game of any kind ever made!! Thanks for opening my eyes.

I agree with you as I loved Gameday from '95 - '98. That series just got better every year for a few years, too bad it completely fell off in the PS2 era. Also, I really enjoyed QB club on the N64, I remember it was the first game to show the players breath during snow games :D.

Welcome to the thread, EA.

:lol

Ha! Agreed. I remember picking up QB Club and Madden 64 (that was the year I think they had a deal worked out with the NFLPA, but not the NFL) and being generally more impressed with QB Club.

While I did not play the Xbox version, I did play the 360 version and that was complete crap, missing way too many features.

They were completely different games. While the Xbox version was, IMO, the best football game ever made, the 360 version was one of the worst.

Never played it, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was an excellent title. Same thing happened when they transitioned from N64 to PS2. I'm sure the dev team was comfortable with the engine at that point, and it allowed them to go in and tweak the hell out of it.

The game still looks decent and the gameplay (especially the passing) has the fluidity EA has just not been able to capture with Madden. Am I crazy if I pass up Madden to play this with updated rosters this year? :lol
Believe it or not.. madden is much improved this year...im a huge 2k fan myself but the gamestop demo shows a much different madden this year.

Some of us at Operation Sports Forums played a big roll in this as Ian Cummings interacts with us there and has used alot of our idea's and suggestions and put them to use in M10 this year..cant wait for M10 to go retail!!! I never thought i'd say such a thing as i always hated madden but this is definitely better

Interesting, what made that year stand out for you above the more recent versions?

I agree, this years Madden so far seems to be starting off on the right foot. The slower speed definitely gives the game a more 2k feel, and I like the adjustments made to the passing game as well. I bought '09 and played it for a couple months but the passing game annoyed me to no end, and I ended up selling it. I do not notice the same issues in this year's demo which is great.

Madden '10 will be the first football game I've bought since 2K5. I guess technically I picked up Madden '09, but I ended up returning it or selling it or something a few weeks after I bought it because I never played it.

Really want to get going with a new franchise mode, though. 2K5 is still a lot of fun, but I want to learn a new system. As mentioned earlier, I don't spend too much time actually playing the games themselves, I'm all about franchise management.

As my first act, Crabtree will be a Raven!

EA PR before ESPN 2K5 came out:

"They could give that game away free bundled with a sandwich and people still wouldn't want it !"

2K5 comes out and cuts Maddens market share from 10 - 1 down to 2 - 1

EA buys rights to NFL license

EA buys rights to NCAA license

EA buys rights to Arena football license

EA buys rights to CFL license

EA buys rights to ESPN license

I mean damn, they even bought ESPN 2K5's name out from under them. That's fear. That's cowardice.

The NFL doesn't even know how badly they got played on this license deal. It has definitely stagnated growth in football games. Compare all of the improvements in games from last generation to this generation. The improvements in graphic fidelity, physics, and on screen geometry in a GTA game is astounding. The same improvements can be seen in every genre and every game that has crossed over from last generation to this one.

Compare all of that to Maddens sad graphical upgrades and almost non-existent gameplay improvements. And the few gameplay improvements they have made have been because they have aped 2K5's gameplay.

And the NFL I guess will find out the hard way that Madden doesn't need to re-up on the license in 2011. It takes so long for a sports game to gain market share that EA can skip the license for 3 or 4 years and nobody will be able to catch up. You have to grow a sports franchise, both in gameplay improvements year over year, and in customer recognition. I wonder if the NFL realized that the contract they signed would last EA all the way to 2015 without any threat of competition.

Such weird timing. Me an my buddy started a franchise together on all-pro, its so damn good!

Sad that 5 years later and theirs no better presentation in any other sports game whatsoever.
Presentation is what made it great.

The lack of a true Franchise and overall gameplay just didn't click "fun" to me. I sold it and it bought Madden '05 that year. Owner Mode had me playing that for two years. In my view, Madden '05 is the best game overall I've seen put out to date.

Actually, that's good business sense backed up by a shitload of cash.

Also, I'm sure they have some stipulation in the contract that they have to produce a game every year; I doubt they could just skip any years.

I'm a converted Madden hater too and I've bought every release since NFL 2K died but the Madden 2010 demo feels like more of the same. Just too clunky compared to 2K

I'm not into Madden, football or ANY sports games (sans NBA Street and SSX) at all. I downloaded the extended Madden 10 demo last night. I know it's an old build, but the visuals are pretty piss poor. It looks like an upscaled PS2 game, with tiny fragments of detail here and there. Oh, and how the hell do you snap the ball? :lol There are no control setting or any kind of option menu in the demo.

The GUI is nice, but what the hell is with all of the Snickers ads? :/

lawl, i was the same, sometimes i try to force myself to like madden, downloaded every single demo that comes out to try to get a feel for the game, hated everyone of them

Surprisingly Madden 10 has taken great strides in making it like 2k5, with quarterback dodging etc. but still not as good as 2k5 which is pretty sad.

But i do like the direction madden is headed. Thank you peter moore

No I'm not saying that they would skip a few years of releasing Madden. They would never pass up a chance to sell their cash cow.

What I'm saying is that due to the nature of sports titles that even if they didn't re-up on the exclusivity contract no other football game would be able to compete with them for 3 to 4 years even if that game shared the NFL license. I don't think the NFL had a full grasp of this when they signed the contract.

Halo 3 is great right? But Halo 3 being great doesn't hurt the ability for COD 4 to sell millions and become the defacto online multi-player game in 1 year. That wont happen with a sports license. It takes a few years not just to get your gameplay working in all facets, but also to get the gaming public to migrate over to your game. People will play Halo 3 and COD 4 and switch back and forth between them. Most of the sports gaming public has the 1 game they will play and they don't play any other. Very few people played 2K5 and Madden 2005 at the same time. It's just how sports games work.

:lol I'm loving all the Madden hate! :lol

NFL 2k5 was a damn fine game. Probably my most played Xbox game outside of Halo2 and CSkies. But it's an old game now. Madden surpassed it with Madden08

How has no one mentioned first-person football mode yet? I remember being the dolphins, choosing to be Ricky Williams, and just steamrolling every defender that got in my way. That was football!

Yes. 2K titles always performed better on the Xbox due to the built in harddrive and more power. You had the halftime shows with video, etc. If you were a PS2 gamer, Madden was the way to go. Not so on the Xbox.
Yup this man speaks the truth

Classic_Gs said:
Well 2K5 performed better on Xbox because for that year the Xbox was the lead platform, whereas 2k4 & 2k3, the PS2 was the lead platform. If you had the PS2 HDD though, you could watch the video recap at halftime and post game just like the Xbox version.
And so does he

I would just like to thank the OP for linking to how to update the 2k5 rosters. Updated mine and started a new franchise and was in football heaven. Time to do what (sadly) can apparently only be done in video games these days--take the Bengals back to the Super Bowl. :D

2K5 is still the best football game ever created, imo. It's certainly the best presented football game.

Easily, on both points. I've since bought and played Madden, but I'd be lying to myself if I said NFL 2k5 wasn't a way better product, and in many ways the best sports game ever made.

Well, gee, it only took them 3 years and making it impossible for the competition to continue their franchise.

GG, EA. You're so awesome.

I was playing it a few weeks ago. It still has players online. Don't think I'll be playing it much more from this point out, though. The flaws in the game remind me how awesome 2k6-2k10 could have been. Their franchise mode would probably be much better than Madden's by now, Madden's franchise mode has stagnated, I feel 2k was moving more towards a coaching experience in it's franchise and probably would have expanded on that greatly. I also wonder what their counter to superstar mode would have been, and if they would have expanded their online services. They had Online leagues and 8 player online in 2k5, I wonder if we could have seen full 11 on 11 online football by now.

Oh well, No way of knowing what could have been.

I never could get into 2K, always was a Madden fanboy. Would be nice if the exclusive would end so EA would be forced to better the product.

Didn't that have some weird system were you could match up against Carmen Electra or something? :lol

Still; loved that game.

So I went an bought NFL2k5 a few minutes ago. All $0.74 of it! Of course I didn't have any cash so the cute girl working at Gamestop was giving me shit for charging .74 on my debit card! Then she refused to give me a bag because she said she wanted me to feel the shame of walking through the mall with a game that came out 5 years ago!

I thought Madden07 matched NFL 2k5, but it was Madden08 that surpassed it. Madden09 was pure awesomesauce

But yeah, I'd to see NFL 2k still alive & kickin'. We would've had Madden10-level of quality in Madden08
