I popped in NFL 2K5 just now

I still feel 2k5 is the best football game ever. I have not buyed an NFL game since, I continue to refuse to buy a Madden game after the shit they pulled.

BUT I played the madden demo today. Is it just me or does Madden 10 feel more like NFL 2k than any Madden prior. I enjoyed the demo a lot, it felt like NFL football.

Its mostly because they slowed the tempo way down. I like it much better that way

The first football game I ever bought was 2k5, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I remember reading about how EA bought the rights, and it reeked of fear. I played madden 10 just a few days ago, and it still hasn't recaptured the magic I felt back then. I'll buy 10 used just so I can play with my friends. I guess 2k5 will be the only football game I've ever bought :/.

Madden '07 was awful, hated that game.

I'm not sure what I enjoy more, seeing fans cry about the 2K series (which I wasn't a big fan of), or actually having the option to purchase a football game other than Madden?

We all want more options, but it is what it is. 2k5 had issues just like Madden. There were stunts in 2K5 that had a d-man in your face as soon as the ball was snapped.

Yeah the D-line was a big issue with 2k5, you can sack the QB almost every play if you wanted.

I can only imagine the possibilities if 2K sports still had a NFL game this generation. I think EA would be in a lot of trouble (not sales wise). One of my most favorite thing about the 2K series was the presentation. It was unmatched, and still have not been matched by Madden or any other football game for that matter.

My main complaint was that the running games was still over-powered in NFL 2k5. Still, it was improved from NFL 2k4.

Everyone is giving EA shit for buying the license out of fear, but I thought I remember reading that the NFL was shopping the license so EA did what they had to do so nobody else bought the rights.

Try the Madden 10 demo, I was REALLY impressed with the presentation in the demo. Felt like I was watching a real broadcast!

The NFL made that up to save face, obviously. So did the inside sources who also said this is what happened.

Get your facts straight, AZ!

Nah, the smart folks would find both EA and the NFL equally culpable.

Yes! And then the NCAA did the same! And the Arena football league! And the CFL! And then ESPN! All in the same year!

When you look at it that way EA had no choice really.

EA has attempted to purchase the exclusive licenses to nearly every big sport in existence over the years. They did the same thing with the NBA around the time they signed the NFL deal, and the NBA told them to go fuck themselves. EA doesn't want competition - it makes it much easier for them to release glorified roster updates every year when they're the only game in town.

And graphically it still looks damn good.

it does....the colors it uses for the uniforms and the field, is just looks more realistic than even Madden 2010 right now...imo......sure Madden 10 looks great in screen shots EA has released but when you play the game(demo) the uniforms look washed out upclose. Although Madden 07 for the PS3 looked amazing....high rez uniforms and fields...you can zoom all the way to the stitches on the Unis like in MLB The Show....but they cut back on EVERYTHING just to reach 60fps for Madden 08/09/ saddy still for Madden 10.

Also 2k5 had the most alternate uniforms....I remember the Falcons having like 7+ different uniform combination types.

anyway here some clips of the 5 year old game that still looks great compared to today's football games....

Perhaps, but Take-Two is guilty of the same thing. They bought the rights to be the only third-party baseball game in town and now we miss out on updates to the MVP Baseball series which was superior to the MLB 2K series. But let's just ignore that, EA is, of course, the only corporation that cares about maximizing profits.

So I went an bought NFL2k5 a few minutes ago. All $0.74 of it! Of course I didn't have any cash so the cute girl working at Gamestop was giving me shit for charging .74 on my debit card! Then she refused to give me a bag because she said she wanted me to feel the shame of walking through the mall with a game that came out 5 years ago!

What?? You just left??? MARRY HER!!! :lol

Jesus, I read the title as "NHL2k5" and spent about 10 seconds wondering why the OP was comparing NHL to Madden. Goes to show what a few years and exclusivity does = /

I have a feeling Take Two only took the MLB license because they were afraid that EA would sucker punch them again.

It is the exact same situation. 2K buying the rights to MLB shut out the superior EA baseball game. If I cared one bit about baseball I would be just as pissed. But to my recollection 2K didn't also buy the rights to every type of organized baseball on the planet then buy EA's name out from under them. And lets face it, 2K bought the MLB license as a response to EA buying the exclusive NFL license.

It was EA that approached the NFL about exclusivity year after year. And my guess would be that after having their cash cow see it's market share reduced from 10 - 1 down to 2 - 1 they did the only thing they could do, offer an absurd amount of money for an exclusive contract that they knew 2K couldn't match. Since then EA has again been free to rake in a consitant yearly bag of cash while spending the minimum on the development. That's called a cash cow.

How could you possibly think that there was some kind of exclusivity deal out there that EA had to buy or they would lose the NFL license? There is no way 2K could have ever afforded the exclusive license so exactly how was there a "buy it or lose it" situation over the license?

NCAA 07 looks better than the new one as well. It's a damn shame they couldn't get the level of detail they got in Madden 07/NCAA 07 with 60 FPS. It was almost a false start this generation because of how good those games looked. Every time I get a new Madden demo, like with 10, I'm disappointed by the graphics.

Haha, my girlfriend that lives with me would not appreciate! But if that doesn't work out....

I'll never sell this...but it's rough to play now. I always get it out for a game or two when football season rolls around, but that's usually all I can manage. Haven't bought a football game in 5 years as a consequence.

All of this is pure speculation on your part. You have no idea who initiated exclusive contract talks between the NFL and EA, how much 2K had to throw around for an exclusive deal with the NFL, or exactly why EA made the deal. I would think it had less to do with 2K selling over 3 million copies of 2k5 to EA's 6+ million of Madden 2005 and more to do with the fact that EA had to drop their title $10 and later $20 in response to 2K selling their game for $20. In the face of shrinking profits they did what any good company would have done.. found a way to maximize their profits again. But like you, I am only speculating.

Now, was it the NFL that approached EA or vice versa? Who gives a shit? Would either answer exonerate either company from all blame? Of course not. Though it is worth pointing out that the NFL has always had exclusive deals with various companies, long before EA signed them a check. Is this really any worse than MS or Sony publishing a game to guarantee it is exclusive or out right paying for exclusive status? It's just business. I would love to be playing on a next generation Dreamcast but hey, shit happens.

And what shape would 2K football even be in had this deal never been done? Were they going to continue trying to low ball EA every single year and make little money on the games? Every other franchise they are running has become stagnant and in most cases a joke. MLB sucks. NHL is a train wreck. NBA is glitchy and average at best imho and it's their best franchise. And everyone rains on EA's parade for releasing yearly roster updates yet all of these titles are also released on a yearly basis with little innovation. Seems to me it is just sour grapes.

Just started a game... presentation is unmatched. The commentary is also so far ahead of Madden it isn't even funny. Player specific commentary is amazing.

-The whole game feels like it has more of a soul than Madden. I don't know if that makes much sense, but this looks more like what I see on tv on Sunday. The players look more alive.

-One thing I don't like is how a player does the Undertaker situp after being knocked down.

Fortunately, I'm a consumer here, not a businessman, so I can say that I genuinely don't give a fuck about the business aspects of this deal. As far as whether or not it's worse?

Abso-fucking-lutely. It much more akin to MS or Sony locking up a genre than any particular title or franchise. The NFL is synonymous with football when it comes to videogames. If you don't believe that, take a look at the releases since the exclusivity deal. What did we get? A couple of cell phone games, and that backyard football, kiddy bullshit?

ESPN 2K4 and 2K5 are the only NFL games I've ever really been able to get into. Madden was never my game and I didn't know what Blitz was like so I never played it back then (wish I did though considering I love Hangtime).

There's something about those two games that had me playing them over and over again. Only played a football game a handful of times afterwards.

I'm really amazed at how well the animation and graphics hold up. I have to keep reminding myself this came out on the the regular old Xbox. I never got to play it in HD back in the day so I'm enjoying this.

-I really like that my players can't run through stadium walls.

-Hmmm, 1:45 before half-time and I'm punting, the other team has all 3 time outs and is just letting the clock run out.

-While the post-play presentation looks amazing I'm noticing a lot of player warping. The defender that just made the tackle isn't in the shot when the ball carrier gets up to celebrate.... things like that.

What Madden has always failed at, Playing defense sucks balls. In the 2K games I would make a big difference playing as a guy. And you could change to the guy on a pass and make the play.

In Madden if you changed to a DB on a pass you often drifted in the wrong direction or just flat out botch it.

I seem to remember that if you had the PS2 hard drive that you could install the game on the harddrive and get moving highlights, import music for kick off and touch down and half time show. I think I still have 2k5. I thought it was a good game, not quite matching the fanboy hype (though I'm no Madden fan either) but easily worth $20. The passing game was a little broken though. Too many wide open dropped passes. Although TO is on the cover.

Please make a gif of the fumble that happened earlier in that drive where the receiver was called down. Yes, I'm still very bitter.

Your bitter? I wanted to draft Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith.

ESPN 2k5 is the king of presentation and how to implement a license (in this case the ESPN license) in a game, but Madden trumps the shit out of it when it comes down to gameplay, and that's what is important to me when it all comes down to it.

-Running between the tackles is 100, no 101, no 101.9% more fun in NFL2k5!

That's because its 100, no 101, no 101.9% more cheesy than any game in football history. Our NFL2K5 GAF league had half the league rushing for 3000+ yards with 8+ yards per carry. I was putting up 12 yards per carry with Alstott! Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Touchdown!

It actually got worse with APF2K8 because of the no-name scrubs on defense.

Yeah, I can see how it could be exploited. It is a lot of fun actually seeing blocks set up and running right off a blocker's hip. It just feels like more fun to me.

I created some wacky running plays that allowed me to avg 25 yards a rush some games in Madden 2005.

Denver playbook did have a cheap QB sneak in 2K5. Vick did get tired and only had like 80 speed in the game so got caught.

I really enjoyed 2k5 when it came out, definitely my most-played football game.

I usually play the Madden games for a week or two and stop for various reasons...but I actually was in tournaments and stuff for another gaming forum all the way until the next football season with 2k5!

The rushing was too easy, though. My favorite play was the pitch up the middle. Ooooh, baby, guaranteed 5 years AT LEAST every time :D

And to this day, I haven't played a football game where the "touch" of where you want to throw felt so good...if you threw the ball away from a defender, you'd be rewarded.

Like someone said above, defense is actually fun in 2k. In Madden you can only play the defensive line manually or you get destroyed. In 2k, DB play is so fun

I hope the license becomes available to all developers and 2K dominates with a new one. I'd love to see them use the euphoria engine in a 2K game.

-The halftime and post game shows, while cool the first time you watch them, they are skipped there after for me.

You must not know how to play linebacker or db in Madden then. Playing defense is my favorite part of Madden.

Info about Cloudy: He doesn't actually play defense in sports games. He doesn't even pick his own plays, he uses Ask Madden/Coach.

At one point he thought that pressing Y (or Triangle on PS3) while playing as a lineman would cause AI DBs to INT the ball and would brag about how he was the one who made that INT. :lol
