I root for certain games to fail because I don't want more games like them

100% disagree.

The space is big enough for so many types of games to exist, and as such the amount released nowadays 99% can't keep up with.

Why does anyone need to waste their time, energy, and attention on shit you don't like? Stay in your lane.

The amount of SP games released yearly dwarfs GaaS title attempts. It will always remain that way.

The GaaS boogie man isn't coming to take your SP titles.
 
I like it when stupid GAAS projects fail, Concord was especially good - since it probable affected the whole industry. Have high hope for Horizon Fortnite to burn quite brightly too - hopefully it crashes so bad that others will rethink their GAAS initiatives

I would have loved for Bungie to make a new Marathon more like the original Marathon, meaning a single player (or co-op) story oriented FPS with a campaign. Like a Sony Halo. Like the original Marathon. Instead of course we got a sweaty online hardcore PvP GaaS Marathon.

I think its fair to say there is a degree of GaaS coming for our SP titles...
 
The trick isn't for one genre to fail as much as we need no genre to get too popular.

Seems once something is a breakaway hit we get copycats for the next decade (extraction shooters and battle royale)
 
Public discourse around products coming to market is a significant part of how the market corrects itself. Yes you can (and should) vote with your wallet, but you do not forfeit your right to take part in that discourse because you did not buy the product. Positive comments are also no more inherently valid or valuable to that discourse than negative comments.

'I'm not buying x because...' is a far more useful communication than simply not buying x. The latter does not inform anyone why you didn't buy something.

'I'm not buying x, but I'd buy y if you made that instead next time' is also a useful communication.

LOL. Bungie made the game they wanted to make. Keep in mind they pitched D3 to Sony and it got shot down.

They could've made anything but this is what they zeroed in on and got approved.

They just grossly miscalculated how much people want a sweaty AF PvP game with a divisive art style.
 
I want to add also, I don't care that marathon was made honestly..its just that they sacrificed d2 for it.

I am fine with games existing that aren't for me there's so many I couldn't care less about that exist and good for them but most games arent tied to a game that had to be a sacrificial lamb so to speak so that's why this one rubs the wrong way.

And it started when d2 was just getting it's footing that's the salt in the wound, 2019 2020 being deep in d2 the shift was felt and that sucked and I think does add to it all.

But marathon is definitely an easy game to poke at 😅

I somehow just don't get it. You can simply ignore games you don't like. After all, there are more than enough games out there. This whole attitude of "If I don't like a game, then I don't want it to exist" is a bit childish and, frankly, unbearably stupid.

A little more tolerance wouldn't hurt.
 
It's not like Concord and Highguard would've done any better if people just didn't say anything mean about them. That would've just meant nobody talking about them at all. They would've bombed even harder, just silently. The only difference is that this way the developers and games journalists who are addicted to social media get their feelings hurt a bit, which is apparently totally unacceptable lol

I genuinely thought they were going to use D2 and marathon, maybe moreso marathon, to float them to finishing a D3.

It made the most logical sense. But now it's up to marathon to just keep them afloat period.

It's possible I've seen what ffxiv pulled off. I'm personally all for the game becoming a Destiny like game but the main PvP focus is extraction but still carries the staples of Destiny with social space, raids, dungeons, a campaign, etc.

I hadn't really thought about it quite like that before :pie_thinking:. I guess it is harder to ignore something that you'd rather not see when there are tons of people actually saying it. Whereas with just not buying something, it's possible to spin that in a bunch of different ways.

Of course, it's still possible to deliberately misunderstand or pretend it's just some extremists because of all the bots and outrage farmers out there, but at least the core message that people are unhappy with all these gaas games is hard to completely ignore, when the serious decision makers are making their deliberations.

If somehow it just became a hub type game like destiny with all those activities and added more normal cool characters, I'd Def give it more of a glance. But I just have a hard time seeing that happen but never know

Idk that keeping it a PvP only focused game is a path to success. We know pve is on the drawing board so it's just a matter of to what extent and how engaging it is.

I personally want it. I can't just sweat 24/7. Looking forward to the reset just so cryo is maybe more manageable in new season.

Whether they miscalculated demand or it ended up the most popular mp game ever, it doesn't change that there is an opportunity cost associated of making a different game, which is the main point of contention.

You are saying the decision makers at Bungie aren't to blame, due to the decision-makers at Sony. Even if that were relevant, it's just goal-post moving; why aren't we blaming Bungie's owners to begin with?

If you wanted Destiny 3, you would have it if it weren't for Marathon. Those hundreds of millions Sony burned on failed GAAS could have been used to make something else.

What's so hard to understand?

The post was in relation to people saying GaaS is taking away from SP games.

Bungie could've pitched a SP game, and D3 would've been soloable for 90% of stuff I'm sure.

They pitched and wanted to do this game. Sony hand in hand said yes this is a good idea.

Who is to blame? No one. What are we blaming? The game found an audience but a small one. It reviewed well. If there is a blame game then everyone from top to bottom is at fault because they all wanted it to succeed and misread the room.

Bungie pitched multiple times D3. Which is a GaaS title. Micros, expansions, and a huge playerbase. Yet it wasn't greenlit.

Why? We can all speculate. Things like the cost, Dev time, the loss in playerbase, etc.

And pitiful number of SP games this gen is a direct consequence of that.

Trying to find blame is a different statement than the simple notion that by making one game, a different game didn't get made. Sony had every opportunity to say no, don't make this, do something else. But they decided to put their money on this. Again, even if it were the most popular game ever, it wouldn't change the opportunity cost.

Example, I can lament the fact that open world Zelda being so successful means Zelda with "normal" dungeons took a hike for 15 years. I'm not actively pissed at people for liking the game too much or buying too many copies of it (it is a good game), but that won't change how I feel about this and I'm entitled to wish that hadn't happened.

Last of us evolved into and was stopped by ND. No one told them to do that instead of just a MP mode again.

Concord studio was a new studio.

Jades studio is a new studio.

Bungie is a known GaaS studio now.

Yet I can't begin to list all the SP games we've had in comparison to that. Returnal, god of war Ragnarok, Yotei, Spiderman 2, ratchet and clank, last of us remake/remasters, Saros, Wolverine coming and I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff.
 
I just let my wallet do the talking. As long as other gamers are like-minded and do the same, then the numbers should speak for themselves.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good public shit smear campaign as much as the next guy, other peoples drama is peak entertainment.

For FY 23 they had lower budget on SP games than before (and games cost more and more to produce + inflation, that FY25 budget is lower in reality than FY2019):

Except it was going to, and it's well documented that this is what publishers like Sony wanted to happen.

Sony's entire plan was to buy Bungie and turn Playstation into GaaS money making machine.

Games don't happen in a vacuum. You can't make 12 live service games without negatively effecting your single player games. And we know for a fact multiple single player game pitches were denied and as well as multiple developers were put on live service games that have never worked on them previously.

And here is the nail in the coffin. If GaaS isn't hurting singleplayer, explain this. 88% of spending was on SP games in 2019. 45% was the projection for 2025. GaaS are clearly eating into the funding of SP games.

The fact is, the amount of money and developers that Sony used to push GaaS asbsolutely hindered their single player output this generation and these GaaS actually been successful it would have only gotten worse.

There's a bit of irony here, because some times it's the very same tendencies we complain about what force developers to make the games they don't want to make. Like what happened with Blend Studio, bet they'd prefer to make Days Gone 2 rather to be forced into the GAAS market (and fail in the process).

Imo people should be able to complain if they want. For me it's not a matter of hate towards a particular dev (unless they really earn it) but really disliking the way things are going with modern AAA games. But to each their own, thankfully there's still tons of AA and indie games for me to enjoy with the occasional AAA that doesn't suck.

But I do think this discourse of wanting games to fail comes from having no outlet to channel all the love for the games we actually want. If there were plenty of single player AAA Sony games every year, there wouldn't be so much desire for Marathon to fail, because we'd be too busy enjoying the games we want. But because one thing can't exist without the other, it creates a vacuum. It's forced. We don't have a choice. We don't get what we want, and what we do get is presented like we should be grateful for it. Some people genuinely enjoy live service games, but a lot of us don't, and we're given no alternative.

That's where the resentment comes from.

We hate Sony doing GAAS because it comes at the expense of the better single-player games they used to deliver, so we want them to bomb for Sony to realize they're betting on the wrong horse and to give us back what we want. Same reason that many want COD to fail because they're fed up with bro shooters saturating the market and want talented devs to do something else. I haven't seen the next rumored God of War with Faye, but my opinion on it is already negative because I don't want God of War to be feminized. If it bombs, Sony and SSM will hopefully get the message and stop heading in that direction.
