IGN First: No Man's Sky 21 Minute Gameplay Demo

That's a weak argument because whats stopping the gpu from computing physics?

The fact that it's a laptop-class GPU from a couple years ago, running on an engine from a small 10-20 person team.

Just looking at Firewatch, you never would have guessed that it would be chugging and dropping frames all over the place on PS4. After getting burned on that one, I'm trying to keep my expectations in check.....at least until someone at Hello Games literally says "The Playstation 4 version is locked at 60 frames per second."

My god, what is it with IGNs video player? It's always a stuttering mess for me, even on the lowest settings.

Why do you want to so bad? I think this is the definitive "if you don't like what you see here then this game is probably not for you" video. Just move on.

Fair enough. The novelty of it is admittedly cool but that's about where my interest ends.

It also never works on mobile for me. I don't understand the point of not embedding their YouTube uploads on the site.

Graphics look kind of rough. Is there any ambient occlusion?

From my most recent understanding, you basically can't. Even if you do you can't tell them apart from NPCs and there is no real way to interact with them.

They had to downgrade for VR support
just kidding

I love that I can land on that demo'd planet and go "Well, these trees and animals don't really make sense. This place is shit." and immediately fuck off and go to another planet or an entirely different star system in a matter of moments.

To the people that think this looks fun, why? Not being facetious here. I honestly don't see the appeal and desperately want to.

Exploration. Discovering shit. Blowing shit up. Trading. Learning alien language. Fly to new planets. Pimp my ship. Shoot shit. Discover new creatures. Shoot said creatures. Try to find other players. Collect resources. Buy new weapons. Create new weapons.

Does that satisfy your desperation?

Not particularly taking a shot you, but this sentiment is starting to venture into "but what do you do?" territory. In fact I see this more in NMS threads than the BWDYD? posts. Given everything that has been overtly said about NMS and the type of game Hello Games wants to put out there, if playing with your friends is of importance to you, you might want to take a pass on NMS.

Wow, that's really good to know. I've been interested in this game but have been waiting for it to get closer to release before really digging into it. I guess I just assumed that I'd be able to team up with buddies at the least. Disappointing, but thanks for the advice.

I imagine you'd have to have the same opinion about Minecraft... a consistent best seller for years, and a game that has taken the younger generation by storm more than any Mario has in a decade.

It offers endless exploration and manipulation. The wonder of what's over there can trump hand-holding narrative or competitive-designed games.

I do hope they can get it to a solid 60 on PS4. Though I'll probably pick up the PC version, I imagine there's way more hope for official VR support on PC if they can do it on PSVR as well.

You're right. I find Minecraft dreadfully boring and don't understand the appeal. Funny enough I adore Terreria and own it on 3 platforms, including the physical PS4 Special Edition lol. Different strokes and all that.

Damn, development is really taking its toll on Sean.

The game is incredible as always. Can't wait for june.

What a man.

Question, meet answer:

Didn't get the hype before. Now I do.
A game with endless possibility.

It's not necessarily about what you do (which, if you do some reading, still sounds interesting). It's about the literally endless amount of discovery. There are some really cool details about the algorithms which suggest things can be really different on every planet.

There are trailers even showing giant animals - like really giant, like 150+ feet. Imagine finding an ocean planet populated entirely by giant whales. Or a planet which is all one massive storm and is only populated by bloodthirsty bats. Or etc etc etc - the possibilities are endless.

It looks really good, I was interested before but this really sold me on the game.

The joy of finding new planets, animals etc and being able to name things is going to be so good.

The bummer is the lack of multiplayer, or at least co-op.
I'd love to do co-op in this game.

Major, but very dubious and probably fake spoilers:

Apparently there is multiplayer. There was a highly suspect info dump earlier this week from one source, not verified independently. Guy said that when you reach the center of the universe, loads more gameplay systems open up including co-op and wider multiplayer options.

Not a problem. Yeah, had a similar conversation with a friend the other day that pretty much mirrored this. He loves sci-fi, space exploration, etc... but his gaming habits heavily lean on multiplayer and wanting to play things with his friends online. Understanding that NMS isn't that really helped to inform his decision; he cancelled his pre-order and said he'll likely wait a few months to see if there's a price drop around Black Friday and then jump in. He's still interested in the game but now that it doesn't really align with what he wants from it, he can be a bit more objective about his hype levels.

Is the scale of the planets realistic? Can you go on exploring a planet for thousands of miles and go around it?

Yep. Not sure about 'thousands' of miles, but we know it would take you days real-time at least (like 100+ hours), and there is a variety of planet sizes. And yes you can literally walk one direction and, several days later (IRL), come back to the point you left off from the opposite direction.

*Yawn*

It is not pop ins everything is producetial generated right in front of you.

Then it's poorly executed. In Elite the asteroids are visible at any distance where you may actually be able to see them. They load in way too close looking at this build. They should have a lower quality model active way earlier IMO. It's less distracting on the planets although very noticeable still, but in space with the asteroids it's a little jarring.

It blows my mind that it's not just arbitrary day/night cycles for each planet, it's actually stars that determine the cycles. I'm so used to planets being separated by loading screens and instances that I'm having trouble grasping everything in the universe (well maybe not entire universe, but near vicinity anyway) being able to influence things.

But, I have also not played Elite.

A few question since my interest is piqued:

Why you bump into other characters
Does the planet you start at dictate what you look like?
Have they show a character creator or other characters?
Will animals attack? Hostile plant life? Do animals attack other animals?
Any word on other two legged evolved species that are hostile?

Thank to anyone with answers.

A few question since my interest is piqued:

Why you bump into other characters - Extremely rare, very unlikely but possible
Does the planet you start at dictate what you look like? - Not sure what you mean by this I'm afraid. Everyone starts on a unique planet around the edges of the galaxy and will be different experience starting off, varying the planet's type of biome, life count etc..
Have they show a character creator or other characters? - There is no character creator. We won't be able to see ourselves unless we meet another player and send screenshots, so will be very unlikely
Will animals attack? Hostile plant life? Do animals attack other animals? - Yes to all 3
Any word on other two legged evolved species that are hostile? - What specifically do you want to know?

Thank to anyone with answers.

So now you are comparing this to Elite Dangerous? Elite dangerous is all hand crafted this is made by math everything you see is not made by the developer. It isn't poorly executed it is exactly what the game does it generates planets, environments on the fly. Like i said everything to the plants to even the animals is producetial generated from math.

I'll answer the ones I know about.

Why you bump into other characters
Does the planet you start at dictate what you look like?
Have they show a character creator or other characters? I don't think so since finding another player is apparently the only way to see what you look like
Will animals attack? Hostile plant life? Do animals attack other animals? I think that's three yes answers but hostile plant life I'm not sure on
Any word on other two legged evolved species that are hostile? It seems so but extremely unlikely to actually find them. Although you could always just make enemies.

Nope I simply think the asteroids could be prioritized a bit more if the distance is this low. Everything on the planets I can understand, it has a lot of work to do but there should be less stress on the system in space like the video shows at the end compared to on the planet. I can just see it being a bit of a pain if you're going fast since some of those were loading in rather close. Also I'm pretty sure the asteroid belts are entirely procedural in Elite, but I could be wrong so not going to double down on it.

This would be amazing, hope its true

Man this game looks great.

Kinda surprised at the graphics hate and dismissing the game for some pop ins. A small independent developer literally builds a universe with lifeforms. I think some popins and not having the best graphical game can be forgiven.
