IGN: Retro Studios Working on Donkey Kong Revival

Jesus Christ and we're only learning about it now? Hopefully it's pretty far along. 2010 release? :D

Nintendo's iron fortress rarely leaks.

Wait, so what happened? Why can you say this?

Once an embargo is broken by anyone, others can spill info too.
However, since only the franchise is known, he really can't go into specifics.
Which is why I asked for very vague comments.

Donkey Kong is still a popular character and I think the IP has a lot of untapped potential.
I'm just glad Nintendo is trying to revive the series, despite how overlooked and good the JB games were.

Maybe now we can get the arcade versions of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. available on the VCA leading up to this game's release?

Question: Why does everyone seem to hate Donkey Kong 64? It was made by Rare during their glory days, and to me it felt like Banjo Kazooie 2 (before Tooie was released). One of my favourite N64 games.

Why the hate?

I love DK64. <3 :)

It's a bit more complicated than what IGN has revealed... they've been working on stuff for a long time. I've known about this particular project since early 2006. It's cool.

Long and tedious, fetch quest gallore, and none of the charm of the DKC games.

I had my fun, but in the end it was bloated and poorly paced. The whole "replay levels with other characters!" thing didn't work at all.

I like it too, but I think people hate it because it has you collecting gazillions of bafmodads across an easy quest.

For me, it was largely because the whole collect-o-thon of those Rare games was just overdone, and felt pretty padded. It was basically any of their other games, but you had to do similar things 5 times over. It got pretty tedious when all of the characters were unlocked, and I think they should have gone for fewer characters.

oh man, multiple retro reveals would be sweet sweet victory. but it's way too easy to get too hungry at E3 :lol

can't wait to see the artwork for this project!

Seriously.
The DK universe done with the amount of detail in the Prime games?
Yes please!

I'm extremely hyped for this game but I can't help but feel I'm going to be extremely disappointed come E3 when they announce some ridiculous motion gimmick for the game.

I'm sorry, but I just didn't get the praise for Jungle Beat. Let me use the normal controller if I want to.

Also, if they get rid of the charm and try to make this a more serious game I'm going to be beyond irritated.

I think compared to the gameplay in Donkey Kong Country (at least when considered within the context of DKC's time, and DK64's time) that it is easy to see why the latter doesn't hold up - it's a borefest.

On another note, could this possibly be New Donkey Kong Country Wii?

You could use the GameCube controller in Jungle Beat.

Well, XB has been on every NA release list since last year, and TLS hasn't even gotten a trailer yet (and no official screens).
We'll see on Tuesday, though.
Last Story has been trademarked in ever region. No trailer because there will be a big E3 blowout :)

I know the above cover is fan-made, but that doesn't make it any less terrible. :lol

I really liked it! I don't know if I would still like it today though. :P

If I could somehow facepalm.gif myself, I would. I had no clue you could do this.

so if it's been in development since 2006, and there's been something of an exodus from retro since then, does that tell us anything about the state of its development, or any troubles that may have occurred? or are those departures unrelated to this game?

I thought DK64 was just OK. It definitely wasn't worth remembering as opposed to the DKC series.

If the rumor is true I hope its a sidescroller and has multiplayer.

Probably semi related.
More than likely, those three guys just didn't want to work on existing Nintendo IPs anymore.

Maybe it was on planning stages for a few years and only got into active development a year or two ago. Anything's possible.

Wasnt it only like 2 guys who left to create Armature, or was there more? Exodus is a bit of exaggeration if it was only a couple of people.

If this is going to be a Rare-style DK game, I'm gonna be super lukewarm about this. Even Donkey Kong Country never did it for me.

wat

yeah, maybe so. i was under the impression that a lot of important creative people had left.

I've been replaying DK64 actually at my friend's house on and off. Right now I'm on Frantic Factory and I still love this game just like I did as a kid. I love using all the different Kongs and I don't mind having to collect so much.

I'm sure many troubles did occur, just as they did with Metroid Prime. But someone once said something about how movies that go through the most trouble during development (like Star Wars) ending up being fantastic. Maybe that also applies to video games?
