I'm most excited about no 'pop in' for next gen

I hope it comes to pass. LOD pop-in is by far my biggest graphical annoyance. Really destroys the illusion of the game world being a believable place.

Sadly I've seen pop in in all the next Gen footage we've gotten so far
Im afraid gt7 and Forza will have pop in.

Soda pop that is. Ba dum tiss.

I'll see myself out.

Can you guys explain me this?

GT7 is PS5-only so should be fully build on the PS5 I/O and SSD:

However, we see a lot of Pop-Ins and LOD issue in the trailer, i.e. pop in on the tunnel lights, there are some shadow pop-ins at min 2:49 at the base of the yellow fence/protection on right of the road. Also at min 2:57 on the corner of the pit stop etc.

How is this possible?

Those gloves have really disappointing textures imo.

I don't remember pop-in being much of a problem with the current generation, but PS1/XBox on the other hand.......

Pop in is still limited by CPU. SSD's won't eliminate it until something like UE5's Nanite is widely used.

I do think it will be improved over this gen though.

-Halo never has never had to render anywhere near "hundreds of enemies"
-Visible landscapes in the distance, like 99.9% of games made?
-Lots of grass that pops in itself lol.
-None of the footage we saw is gonna run at 120 FPS, that's the multiplayer which is irrelevant to the single player gameplay shown.

That's a pretty weak explanation to justify Halo's pop-in.
The thing is Halo does have hundreds of enemies in the level that the game needs to figure when to spawn and change lod. Also has massiv environments with very distant mountains and buildings that the engine meeds also to figure out how to load amd render. Not only based on player position but on camera and even occlusion.

A racing game like gt has a fixed number of cars on a linear emvironment with no branching. You can literally precompute which assets to load and at which lod level for every meter of the track the car may be in, in any of the 2 ways.
Solving pop in on a track based racing game is the easiest of the cases only behind games with no lods at all.

Said so, I am lookimg forward to both games even that I am disappointed with the pop in on both of them

Pop in will continue to be a problem for quite a while to come. IO impacts how fast LOD transitions can be loaded, but ultimately GPU and RAM are the limiting factors. It's why LOD exists in the first place - the GPU can only render so much per frame. Spyro on PS1 used this to amazing effect, allowing the game to punch way above its weight. As long as LOD systems are used, pop in will always exist because you're handing off from one asset to another. It's unavoidable. You can make the LOD more granular and make pop in less noticeable, and with higher speed IO that's a feasible solution. But, then you have to create all of those transitional LODs, which could be a lot of extra work. You can smartly design our LOD to mask the impact - Bungie, for example, design their LODs around silhouettes - but at high enough resolutions its still pretty visible.

Loading screens aren't going away. LOD isn't going away. Don't believe the PR non-sense.

It will continue to happen I think but hopefully less frequently and obviously, I'll be happy enough to compromise with that

Noooooooo. What's likely to be the issue? More detailed models/assets taking streaming budget etc. Irritates the fuck out of me. Shit flicking on and off all over the screen.

Yea, if they even push native 4k, that's going to take away a lot of GPU cycles. Adding more detail to the scene in the form of more textures, geometry, FX, etc.. will also tax the GPU. We simply aren't there yet for no requirement for LODs.

There will always be pop in to some extent, its not always simply a IO problem. You still need the gpu to render the graphics. I remember, i think it was Fallout New Vegas, which has real bad pop in on PC, even at the highest settings. And modders found a way to edit the files so you pretty much render graphics as far as the eye can see, and even on the highest spec PC's, the framerate would tank. Its been done in other PC games as well, with the same results.
Alex on DF pointed out that LOD and Pop In isn't just a bandwidth issue, and that SSDs wont fix it as alot of the time it is GPU power related.
But some here let their fanboy fly too high and anything Alex says is because he is a paid shill by MS.

i saw it in ratchet and clank, halo, gran turismo.. can't say we've gotten much next gen game footage all together
The Halo pop in is more glitch than a limitation.
The LOD drops in and out when the image doesnt even move in or out.

Won't pop in still exist, at least potentially, in order to reduce GPU load? The SSD might remove one significant cause of pop in, but it seems to me that it may still exist, albeit at a reduced level, due to the GPU having to render those graphics as the player moves throughout the environment.

I'm playing Fallout 4 with the DLC included. The pop in and the freeze because of the streaming the map and the loading sucks big time. The LOD sucks big time. IDK about no pop in next gen because there is more texture, detail, 4k, etc but It needs to be better. The SSD for next gen hell yeah. Let's see what the devs do with the PS5. If the is minimum pop in i will take it.

One of the most impressive moments of the UE5 demo is already in the beggining when they control the camera zooming in and out so we can see all that ultra detailed and CG-like rock formations, textures and shadows and that was no geometry/shadow remodeling and issues with texture streaming to be seen.

This is something unheard of and never seen before in a realtime gameplay environment and with full camera control.

UE5 is the engine that will truly unlock what is achievable on next gen consoles.

I'm literally playing through fo4 too right now, I hope the load times are really improved.

So, effect pop-in is a different thing than loading-related pop-in. Especially when it comes to RT, you're still going to see transitions between raytraced effects and "fallback" versions at a distance, they just don't have the power to RT everything.

Yeah, this is one of the most jarring things in graphics together with aliasing. Games already look awesome besides these things. I really hope UE5 will eliminate it at least.
