I'm not committing to a console before going hands-on with the controllers

I always preferred the DualShock and the DS4 seems to be one of the best controllers ever according to all the hands-on articles. So i cannot go wrong with a PlayStation system.

Neither did I. There are some that I like better than others, but no controller ever went in the way of my enjoyment of a game (except when I was a kid and the controller was "cheating" to make me lose ;) )

Pretty much. I find it hard to get used to the offset analogue sticks on 360, but within a few minutes it doesn't bother me anymore.

I like some controllers better than others, but no controller would stop me buying a console.

Honestly - both controllers look like they made improvements. I'm getting a PS4, and just like every other console I have had since my Atari, I will grow into the quirks and greatness of the individual controller. Won't be stopping me!

For me it is both the controller and the OS.

PS3 was poop on both fronts. I owned the system since launch day and it always aggravated me how inferior it was. Even after using the system for 7+ years it still bothered me. I can always tell who is a Sony fanboy whose opinion I can totally ignore by their complete denial of the OS and controller weaknesses of the PS3.

Those analog sticks were loose and shitty for FPS games.

That OS without cross game chat for 8 years is shitty,

These are objective facts.

Sure, MS was shitty in other ways. Their hardware was a piece of shit and paying for Live sucked but neither of those are as important to me as OS functionality or controllers.

I normally wouldn't feel this way because I have always gone PlayStation and obviously the controller's haven't changed much over the years.

That's not the case this time and while I'm not gonna change my purchase decision based on the controller, I'm really anxious to hold it before launch.

I've never ever had trouble with either the 360 controller or the PS3 controller. Both feel great to me and I like using both. Just seems a bit strange to me, to base a purchase around that.

Well in my case if the dpad is as bad as the 360s then thats another 100+ on an arcade stick(and if im already spending 100$ more on an xbone shit adds up) so its kinda a big deal.

These are SUBJECTIVE OPINIONS.

Fixed that for you

I never cared about cross game chat, and those analog sticks are fine for me

But for me, it's all about the games. Any gamer worth his salt should be able to pick up any controller and play with it, as long as the game it's controlling controls good.

No, they are not.

Fact: looser analog sticks makes aiming with precision harder.

Fact: not being able to cross game chat with friends means less functionality and flexibility with socializing.

That is fine if you want to label these things as "subjective," though. It is nice for me to know who I can trust and I can't trust anyone who thinks the Sony controller and OS were better. Those people are Sony fanboys. I owned both systems. I liked both systems but people that are that blinded by favortism are not people I want to trust. Just like I can't trust Nintendo fanboys (they are the worst) or Xbox fanboys (are they still around?). I have always been platform agnostic and probably always will be. But I am glad others betray their fandomb. I am glad they let me know who they are so I can dismiss their opinions. So that when they go "OMG this exclusive game is the best thing ever" I can recognize they are probably full of bullshit.

I'm a fanboy because I didn't brand your opinions as facts? All I said was cross game chat didn't matter to me. Hell, voice chat at all doesn't matter to me. One of the reasons I love Dark Souls so much. And I never had any problem with the sticks. Played through all three Resistance games and Black Ops just fine with them.

I always liked the looseness for FPS games. It felt more tactile.

I've never wanted to use cross game chat. Now the PS4 has it i'll never use it for another generation.

Better cross those off your objective facts list.

I guess, when you put it that way, but would an arcade stick not be a needed purchase anyway if you're going to those types of games? I, probably wrongly, assumed OP was just interested in more generic games.

I own and like both as well, how could you possibly say someone is a fanboy because they prefer a controller? thats stupid, I prefer the ds3 and have mentioned why in this thread, of course its subjective(although I'll admit that I can't argue towards eithers triggers or analogs as I only use a right stick for like....4 games) and my years of psp use make xmb super easy to navigate, as opposed to the constant updates and filler add tabs I find on 360, again I love both and can only play some games on 360(bayo for example which is also probably my favorite game this gen).
what the fuck is cross game chat?

To most yes, but I prefer playing with a pad.(which is why I guess I felt the need to clarify my viewpoint) its kinda rare to use a pad on a competitive level so I don't see a huge crowd screaming for a better dpad, I gotta stand up for my people haha.

I can respect this. 99% of my gaming was done on 360 because the controller was great and PS3's was not imo. There were other factors too though.

I hate the Dualshock 3 (I've called it Dualshake for lulz for years because btw everyone RUMBLE IS LAST GEN(so said Sony themselves)) Brad from Giant Bomb finally said some truth on the design of the DS4 saying "it's still not as good as the 360 controller" in a bombcast, he also had worries about the controller resting on it's L2 R2 triggers while it's laid down. I spent all last gen finding and trying shitty third party controllers to try and get that Xbox feel on the PS3 I eventually found the Power A tournament edition that did the trick nicely.

I'm tempted to get a PS4 but I'm afraid of a repeat of the previous generation, I did play GTA V with the old Dualshakes 3 and it wasn't the worst thing in the world, I had the trigger grip addon thingies on the controller to keep my finger from slipping off the triggers.

People are saying the Xbox One triggers aren't as good as the Xbox 360 triggers, which is discerning. I've got a preorder for both consoles still, I'll be on the fence til Sony says another stupid thing, like going back slightly on the Pulse headset not being fully functional at launch.

I'm one of those seemingly rare people that absolutely loved the DS3. My concern is will the DS4 feel as good to me as the DS3 did?

I know that so much of the hands-on feedback has been that the DS4 is amazing, but many of these reports seem to also come from people that didn't like the DS3 very much. In any case, I cannot wait to go hands-on myself!

Haven't heard a single bad thing about either controller.

I think the sticks are too loose on the Xbox One controller. Now you have heard something negative about that controller. Still a good controller though.

Love the PS4 one.

Maybe "fanboy" made it sound too overly judgmental. I meant people who have a favoritism towards one platform and/or whose primary experience is only with that platform.

I think it's pretty objectively true that the analog sticks and the triggers on the PS3 are significantly inferior to the ones on the 360. The analog stick looseness makes precise aiming more difficult. The triggers lacking concave aspects make your fingers slipping off them a real problem with games that make a lot of use out of them. These are pretty objective flaws.

I get that there are certain kinds of games that don't make use of this stuff. It's probably also why otakus and people who don't play Western games much don't have a problem with the PS4 controllers. Again, I play all kinds of games, Western as much as Eastern, so these faults become readily apparent.

With the OS stuff, it is also a matter of objective fact that the PS3 lacks functionality the 360 has and that even some of the very basic functionality of the PS3 took a really long time to implement. When the system first came out, there were no achievements, you could not access cross game media bar options in game, there were no background downloads, etc. etc. Sony just has not proven they know how to design a robust functional OS. And it makes sense that MS would beat them in that area because MS is an OS company. It is what they do.

I recognize for some people those controller functions and OS options may not be as important. Those are not the people I was referring to as Sony fanboys. I was referring to the people that deny these weaknesses even exist.

I understand your point, OP. The controller is your interface to the entire system and if that doesn't work well then you shouldn't be inclined to purchase that console. I myself have had hands-on time with both controllers and while the DS4 is much improved upon the DS3 design I think I prefer the Xbone controller. It feels a lot like the Xbox 1's S controller, the d-pad is so much better and the impulse triggers are pretty cool.

I've got a preorder for both consoles still, I'll be on the fence til Sony says another stupid thing, like going back slightly on the Pulse headset not being fully functional at launch.

So I'm guessing by this statement that you've completely written off the xbox one due to all of their mistakes?

I think we can all objectively agree the DS3 triggers were awful, and the 360's d-pad was awful.

Also, I don't know how you can downplay controller features when it's the thing you'll be using for countless hours with the console.

The controller is a huge factor in multiplat games. I use a stick for fighters now, and hated the DS3's triggers with a passion, so I used the 360 for 90% of my gaming.

The DS4 looks amazing to me.

I can look at the DS4 and tell it's going to be more comfortable.

That plus the comments from everyone who's opinion matters to me are overwhelmingly positive.

Sony nailed it.

Bumping this to say that I finally got my hands on the new X1 controller (King of Prussia Mall outside of Philly for SE PA GAF, there's a little kiosk on the ground floor and they have a unit under glass, I just asked the guy if I could try the controller out and he said sure). I'm also a 360 only gamer this gen and think the 360 controller is the greatest ever.

The thing feels really great, it's definitely a bit smaller but feels...tighter if that makes sense. I have big hands and the smaller size felt great. The guy pulled out a current gen controller so I was able to compare and I prefer the new one. Triggers felt great and I thought the bumpers were really nice. D Pad seems like it would be more precise than the current one but there was a little bit of "slop" in it, wasn't as tight as I would have liked. Could of just been that unit, I don't know.

The sticks are smaller, at least where your thumbs rest but I really like the way they felt, your thumb is kind of "cupped", feels really secure. Comparing that to my old controller at home with the worn down rubber on the sticks left me with a really good impression of the new one.

I didn't actually get to play with anything, the unit wasn't even turned on, I just held the controller. Overall I came away very impressed with it. Enough to change my current lean toward the PS4? Probably not but it's a really nice controller and I think it's an improvement over the current one.

With USB, are we really limited in which controllers we can use? You can use a PS2 controller on PS3.

I guess since PS4 has a touchpad, that will limit the usability of other controllers not designed for PS4.

I'm not likely going to buy either new consoles for a while (no games I'm loving at launch), but I am really interested in seeing the controller changes for both XB1 and PS4.

I love my PS3 that I've had for about a year at this point, but still REALLY don't like the controller. A buddy of mine bought a converter box for using a wired 360 controller with a PS3 and I wish I had one as well. So I'm most excited to see how the improvements of the new dual shock work for me.

I'll probably like the XB1 controller fine, but I'd like to feel how the rumbly triggers work.

And I'm super excited to try out the Steam controller. Doesn't look like it'll 100% replace my 360 controller, but it looks like it could be really great for certain kinds of games. At the very least it will be great to have a 'Take Screenshot', 'Quicksave', and/or hotkeys on the touch screen. I wish that was coming out this year so I could try it sooner. :(
