I took it as a commentary on the ridiculous weight of expectations placed by (some) Sony fans on KZ2.

I'm loving me some KZ2 but it still made me lol.
 
:lol Wonderful comic. As excited as I am for Killzone some people really have taken it too far. Everything about this one is really well executed, especially Helghast Moses.

I'm looking forward to Killzone 2 (the reviews make it sound like the best FPS since CoD 4) but the expectations on Killzone by Sony fans are pretty out there sometimes.

I'm having flashbacks to littlebigplanet.

I doubt very many sony fans expect KZ2 to do much of anything about PS3's 'struggle' on the marketplace.

There seems to be a perverse perception that the hype surrounding any major PS3 game reflects an expectation among 'sony fans' that the game will be a market-changer. There are definitely folks who have held such expectations, who may hold such expectations about KZ2 - and maybe they're worth poking fun at in a comic - but I would say they're in a small minority.

I've been no means part of the KZ2 hype parade, but I was there for LBP, and there for the same mocking resentment of hype for the game. The implication seemed to be that a fan of a game couldn't express too much excitement for a game unless it was going to 'save' PS3. There were literally people coming into LBP threads trying to downplay it with reference to sales, as if to ask "why the excitement? it's going to bomb!". It's a sales-age orientation run amuck.

I also think that regardless, GAF has a pretty good way of killing hype for undeserving games. Every game seems to attract its 'advocates' who hype, whether that hype gains traction or not is another matter. Usually GAF tosses aside games reasonably quickly after release if they're deemed to be not particularly worthy of it.

Seriously, what the fuck is with this? It's obvious to pretty much every Sony fan with a brain that the tide won't be turned this gen. Yet people still make the "omg dis game is gonna save the ps3 lolol@ PSTools" jokes constantly. Shit makes absolutely no sense. Who says this whole save the PS3 spiel anyway? Just because Sony fans are excited for K2(or any other game) doesn't mean that people think the game will be a market changer. Stop putting words in peoples mouths.

It works both ways. It not only helps spot the over hyped crazed KZ2 fans, but it also helps us rational KZ2 fans find the others who belong on the opposite side of the spectrum.

I don't know, man. As a platform-agnostic gamer, it always seems to me that the threads for PS3-exclusive games harbor some of the craziest people on the forum. In the past week in the KZ2 threads, I've borne witness to:

1. Some guy wanting a bath in Kutaragi's jizz.
2. Pages' worth of *insane* rantings over IGN's 9.5 graphics score.
3. People adopting their own KZ2-specific memes ("Happles", "killz0wned") and running amok with them.
4. The complete disregard for anyone who tries to bring the conversation back down to earth. The mere suggestion that "man, it's too bad KZ2 doesn't have co-op" was met, again, with PAGES of insane ranting and insults.

You simply do not see this behavior in other games' threads that are not exclusive to the PS3 platform. I wish I could explain it, but it's obnoxious. I also have read the Left 4 Dead thread since day 1, and you saw NONE of that juvenile horseshit. Just people discussing the game, as it should be.

That's nothing really do with my point, which was, basically, don't mistake general excitement among the vast majority of 'sony fans' for a general expectation about market performance - which is what people seem to bring up most often when mocking that excitement or hype. That the PS3 fans are 'waiting for..' or whatever.

With regard to the behaviour you are talking about, though, I think you're talking about a small minority of people, albeit perhaps more visible/vocal people. I think there are a number of PS3-supporting..characters..on the board but please do not take them to be representative of 'sony fans'. Nor take them too seriously. If you're getting upset over 'happlez' then I dunno wtf to say. Avatar memes are nothing new or specific to PS3 games, I remember them for halo 3, for gtaiv etc. I can see why people would take offense or issue with insults etc. but taking issue with the more lighthearted stuff is a red flag to me wrt to someone's complaints about hype.

I do agree, though, that hype parades do gravitate more intensely around platform exclusives. I think, minus 'character' behaviour on the part of a few PS3 fans, that it cuts all ways though in terms of exclusives attracting the most attention.

I don't know, the Bioshock crazy was pretty big a few years back. Bioshocked this and Bioshocked that, made me dislike the game before it even came out. Pretty much agree with everything else though.

The problem with those articles wasn't that they were biased. The problem was that they were mediocre articles. They barely offered any decent insight into the PS3's status as a platform. Most of their criticisms were glaringly obvious and redundant. Did they offer any advice as to how the Sony could improve the PS3's situation? Not really. Did they paint an accurate, in-depth picture of the PS3 from any angle besides sales? Not really. Those articles were useful in one regard though- They demonstrated what the perception of Sony's platform is outside of the gaming industry.

It's pretty much the same for all big releases. The fans have no idea how annoying they become during the peak of their excitement. Two weeks after the game is out, that excitement, and Gaf, returns to normal, and then we await the next big game to repeat the process.

Damn, as a fellow platform-agnostic, I usually avoid threads on games that don't interest me but if this is the case I'm gonna have to start reading the PS3 exclusive threads...
