Instant and irrational turn offs in videogaming

space marines
Japanese loli characters on the box
crappy box art.... no matter how good the game is... i will probably sell it if the box look like crap.

western rpg's that have a "lord of the rings" type setting... i skipped skyrim for this very reason.

Games that are so Japanese that any sort of inner logic or sense of rationality basically goes out the window.

It's irrational because, in many ways, I'm a Japan-o-phile.

EDIT: also like the above poster said, overt attempts at Japanese devs imitating a western mechanic or aesthetic. Demon/Dark Souls are one of the few notable exceptions.

-Time limits over the entire game. Fuck that shit, I wanna take my time.

-Open world games. I've tried to get into them, but I just can't. When you give me a giant world with no real direction on what to do, I freeze up and just go play something else.

-Oh, and giant titties. Hate those.

Realism.

It's not really irrational, as gaming is escapism for me, but it's instant. I will tend to walk away from a realistic game when a stylised or fantastic one is on offer. Games based on real-world conflicts are the worst. I just avoid those like the plague.

I don't mind anime (see Tales series, etc). I just don't like the ones with too many super cutesy/moe characters.

Now that I can agree with, I like the anime style, but I hate it when there are too many cute/loli/shouta characters (and mascots).

Someone hasn't played dark souls.

There are no individual characteristics in what turns me off of a game, something is either fun to me or it isn't. And I don't know that until I've played it.

That said, I'm saddened that many people seem to hate "anime" type games. I instantly get an image in my head of some bully who likes beating people up when they say they hate anime.

This is more rational than irrational, but:

Advertising.

Looking at you, Wipeout HD and your loading-screen ads. Never, ever break immersion for some silly real-world product. If I want ads, I can open a magazine or watch TV. I don't tolerate ads in games that I'm paying for.

Seeing this is an instant skip for me

THIS

HATE. THIS. SHIT.

Games about war, might as well make a game about how cool cancer is.
RPGs the thought of turn based battles, fantasy settings and endless talking gives me narcolepsy.
Free to play sounds like it's going to rip you off.
Games with a fantasy setting, wizards, elfs etc. no thanks.
'Retro' style games with ugly graphics Learn how to do proper pixel graphics and stop hurting my eyes with horribly amateurish looking blocky graphics.
Games with pointless customisation options, so boring, especially when there is a load of customisation DLC as well.
Crafting / DIY games, like minecraft (which has those horrible 'retro' graphics as well) and Little Big Planet (also terribly floaty physics), an elaborate form of digital boredom and a colossal waste of time.
MMO I get depressed just thinking about it.

do you play sport games only?

I don't like or play Japanese games. With the exception of high profile Nintendo releases and the occasional Capcom release, I won't touch a Japanese game.

Well, make up your mind, man. Those ARE Japanese games. Believe it or no, Japan DOES happen to have a few games of decent variety and quality that come over here. I dislike hyper-sexualized little girls and spikey-haired teen JRPG heroes as much as many other Gaffers do, but to say that you don't like or play Japanese games really does limit your fun. So are you saying that you've never played Demon Souls, or Katamari, or Radiant Silvergun, or Rhythm Heaven, or House of the Dead, or ICO? Wow man. You're missing out on fun games, broham.

Lack of v-sync and pop-in textures on console games. That's just an incomplete game.

Also, constant updates to games with large file sizes (above a couple megabytes).

Irrational to some people: I absolutely hate it when there are flaws in the controls, whether it be lag, acceleration, or a lack of intuitiveness.

Timed platforming sections in Assassins Creed games. They make me want to throw my controller through the screen every time the game misinterprets my inputs as a desire to jump off the wrong ledge and have to start over again.

Same here. So many people recommended me Totori but whenever I looked at the promotional media of the game I found myself rolling my eyes.

Whenever I read about a new MMO I get really excited.

Whenever I read actual impressions of said MMO and hear things like "class balance", "bad dps", "min/max builds", etc I almost immediately lose interest.

I hate games where:

- All non-Americans are foes
- All girls are either scantily-clad or required-to-be-saved (normally from themselves)
- Emphasis on "realistic graphx". I play games to escape reality, not to play it back.

I blame WoW for shifting the focus from sandbox-y virtual worlds to theme parks where you get to stand in line to do battle with a fearsome spreadsheet.

While many DRM schemes I feel people get irrational about GFWL isn't one of them. It literally keeps me from playing games I own. It deserves a skip.

DRM Schemes, games that pigeonhole you into using a service that may or may not shut off your access to all your games in a variety of very easy ways, and stealth missions.

Ummm, ok?!?
It's kinda strange, imo, to get so oddly angry over people not liking the things you like you fantasize about some magical "bully" beating people up because they have different tastes. Unless that was a typo and you stereotype everyone that doesn't like anime as some atypical Hollywood dickbeard that screams "NERD" before dating raping the prom queen. AND if that is the case, maybe you should analyze why you feel so self-righteous that you treat another person not sharing your interests as a threat.

Fighting game characters whose mechanics involve randomness. Platinum, Dampierre, Yoshimitsu... I generally won't touch those. I'm alright with Shingo though.

Games that allow you to walk into a long loading screen very easily and/or without any warning.

For example if walk past a certain point and you will have a loading screen, or if you accidentally press a button which does the same and so on

Fills me with rage

do you play sport games only?

No, don't like those either :)

I like racing games, open world sandbox games, frantic shooters like Unreal Tournament, adventure games, platform games, old school shooters, twin stick shooters, pinball games etc. EDIT: And fighting games, like Tekken and DOA.

Just curious, any examples of Retro style games with you'd consider good graphics?

Only one I can think of right away is Scott Pilgrim, even though the pixels are huge.

Sierra adventures used to be able to do amazing things even with CGA graphics. 8-bit computers, like the Commodore 64 had some great looking games despite the low resolution and limited color palette. It really is an art form of its own.

This kind of thing is especially bad in Dead Rising 2 when escorting survivors. Go through one long loading screen only to find a survivor didn't follow. Go back through another loading screen, let them catch up then go through another loading screen. Just painful, the load times are already bad enough without having to sit through a triple load.

With smartphone games, any game played in the landscape position turns me off, ESPECIALLY if it uses virtual analog sticks. Also any game that forces the use of the gyroscope is an insta-delete, sadly many portrait games do this.
