Is it possible the PS2 is the worst PlayStation console?

Sorry OP but no, PS2 had a LOT of good games.
These two are enough reasons already to justify the console purchase.

PS3 had some amazing highs (MAG, TLOU, UC3, Journey) but the entire console never seemed like it had a full head of steam. That would get my vote as the worst Sony console.

No. It's not possible. Even in the alternate universe.
It had a rough start but PS2 is easily one of the best consoles ever made.

I feel like the breadth of console games was better for me during the ps1 and ps2 eras and I don't feel like it can be the same again due to budgets. Ps2 had a great library for diverse taste.

If purely going from the games, which is super subjective to begin with, then the only console to "outrank" the PS2, would be the early model PS3.

You could, theoretically, play PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs from the same console, while having a blue-ray player and also having a media hub, I am very lucky that my launch 60GB still works.

From a content perspective, I would still rank the PS2 as the best playstation console, by virtue of still being able to play PS1 games, which was a huge reason as to why, my brother and I switched so quickly to it.

The odd thing with the PS2 was that it needed few years to really take off , especially after 2004
It had not a game like Dreamcast's Shenmue or Gamecube's Metroid Prime and Wind Waker or even Xbox' Halo. Final Fantasy was not that well received like the PSX games.
It also relied too much on shooters, GTA and sports games, setting the current successful trend.

While Playstation 1 trumped the Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 in popularity from the start, PS2 struggled and was on equal terms the first years with DC and GC

The Playstation 1 is easily better than PS2 in the years 2000-2003. But after that there is really no competition for the PS2
So Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, and Devil May Cry don't count?

That's just off the top of my head.

2001 was amazing but I might maybe agree.
Not because it was a bad effort or because it lacked great games (it was tremendous on both accounts) but because it got outdated real fast due to a major shift in graphics hardware & online technology at the time.
Programmable shaders and ambitious online experiences was taking off on PC & Xbox.

So far:
PS1 > PS4 > PS2/PS3

I'm just going to say it's possible. But most likely it's the PS1 imo.

But my opinion isn't great because I didn't become a playstation guy until PS3.

Personally, the PS2 is my favorite game console. I had a PS1, but I didn't play any of the major classics until I had a PS3 & they wetter available for download on there. It was mostly Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Oddworld, Resident Evil & Brave Fencer Musashi for me. The PS2 really opened my eyes though. My first Final Fantasy was FFX (still my favorite to this day). The Onimisha series, Jak & Daxter series, GTA series, Shadow of the Colossus. Freaking Devil May Cry. Playing the dunk contest in NBA Live 2005. Tekken 5 is a sublime fighting game. I'm sure I'm forgetting some gems, but yeah, PS2 is king to me.

For me PS>PS2>PS3

So far PS4 is already better than PS3 and it could even take PS2's place imo. it all depends on game such us FFXV,VII remake,KH3,Uncharted 4,REmake 2,The last guardian ..etc

I know it's generally ranked the highest among the PS consoles, but PS2 is my least favourite of the four, although for personal reasons.
I'm primarily a fighting game fan and the PS2 era was when there was a huge drought of quality fighting games. Cap com and SNK games were mostly on hiatus save for some compilations and 3D spin-offs, MK was going through its experimental phase and I wasn't hugely into 3D fighters.
I'd fallen out of love with games during that period. I played FFX and XII and the GTA series but never finished any of them.
It wasn't until the PS3, SFIV and online gaming that I got back into games in a big way.

I'm late to the thread and I thought I was about to read a long, well thought out explanation such as piracy issues, but I can't believe the crux of OP's reasoning was as simple as "while there was a ton of different games, there aren't many I actually care to play again".

I don't like any Playstation consoles much because of their controllers, but yeah I agree that PS2 didn't really have anything I enjoyed all that much even in comparison to other PS consoles. Then again, the only games I liked from that gen were Halo 1/2, Resident Evil 4, the two God of Wars, and Twilight Princess (excluding handhelds), so that gen didn't particular stand out to me. The GBA was pretty much the only gaming system I really enjoyed that gen.

What is this topic?

June 18th, 2001- Twisted Metal: Black
July 10th, 2001- Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
September 24th, 2001- Silent Hill 2
September 30th, 2001- ICO
October 17th, 2001- Devil May Cry
October 22nd, 2001- Grand Theft Auto 3
December 3rd, 2001- Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
December 20th, 2001- Final Fantasy X

This is the best six-month stretch of gaming on any system that I've ever owned, period. And even outside of 2001 the PS2 was crazy good. So no, it's not possible.

Man, that cover for Final Fantasy XII...

We got this:
Looked great and stayed in the same style as the rest of them.

Also the PlayStation 2 was amazing, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X and XII, Persona 4, the Ace Combat trilogy, the GTA trilogy, Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, the SL F1 games and a tonne more!

I've never even owned a PS2 (though I've played a good amount of PS2 games on my PS3) and I disagree with you there. I have a feeling the PS4 is going to take that crown, though. If it's the only thing you own this gen, it does its job nicely, but in any other situation, the majority of its library is available on other platforms, and its exclusives are scarce. I guess I'll have to wait to the end of the generation before I can properly claim that, though.

I'm not going to knock the OP for having an opinion, but I am going to strongly disagree with said opinion.

I stuck to my PS2 like glue.

Given the sheer amount of games on the PS2, if you cannot find... I don't know, at least 5 that would interest you, I don't know what to tell you.

There was something for everyone on the PS2.

The console itself I want, but it's horrible video output through component makes me have second thoughts. There's a few games I want, but, personally, now it's my least favorite of it's gen.

I don't look back fondly on the PS2, and I have an extremely hard time going back to play PS2 games. Most of the games I cared about on the PS2 have been rereleased on either PSP/PS3/Vita. To me PS3 and PS2 are probably tied for the worst, which is an odd way to refer to it since they were both pretty good. PS1 was almost god-tier to me as a JRPG guy. PS2 JRPGs aren't even close.

The heritage of PlayStation is so strong that it's like picking out your favorite child. Even the PS3 recovered immensely. PS2 can't be looked as worse when it introduced so many industry mainstays.

There is no bad mainline Playstation console. All four iterations are great. If you want to count something as bad, give that title to the Playstation TV, because of the lack of support it got.

it's my least fav. as well.
graphics are ugly and jaggy, the FFs on it are the worst in the series.

i had one but only played tekken on it.
i'm looking forward to play some of its games upresed on ps4

I think it shows just how consistently great PlayStation consoles have been when the PS3 is arguably the worst one so far. On its own, PS3 is pretty bloody amazing!

This is some real hindsight bullshit due to all the remasters and ports over the years makin it seem like PS2 doesnt have much "exclusively" any more. The PS2 was the greatest console of all time, in its time; which is the only honest way to judge it.

It benefitted from an unparalleled install base, and also so much money being pumped into videogames with little restraint. We will most likely never see an era like it ever again.

I never owned a PS2
was a gamecube kid
, but I spent quite a bit of time playing Shadow of the Colossus, San Andreas, Tekken 5, and Devil May Cry with a friend who owned one. That alone would have been enough to make me disagree. But this year I finally played MGS2, MGS3, and Persona 4 for the first time... holy shit. Tell me what else I slept on.
