Is it strange Bayonetta outsold Vanquish?

Vanquish has tremendously well-designed gameplay but there's not that much content compared to Bayonetta, which is bizarre coming after Resident Evil 4 which felt like a whole new frontier in densely packed single-player content. I love the game, but it should've had new game+, should've had an infinite-waves-of-enemies survival mode, et cetera.

One of the things I really liked about Bayonetta was that original reveal they did where she jumps on that bit of building and fights the statues then the camera zooms in somewhere rather um questionable. The song in that is amazing. Does anybody know the name of the song? I still can't find it :/

I think it's a matter of competition. Bayonetta entered into a genre that isn't widely exploited, in a month without much competition. Vanquish is an entry into a pretty heavily serviced genre together in a few months jam packed with shooters of all sorts (Halo, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, even Quantum Theory). Without significant exposure, nobody paid attention.

It's a real shame. Vanquish makes every other shooter on the market seem clunky.

I doubt they'd make a 4 minute TV spot. You probably saw it on TV via your console, downloaded off Marketplace or Network
Fuck, you're absolutely right. My bad.

What else came out around the same time as Bayonetta? Vanquish has some heavy hitters as competition.
Dark Void!!!

Well, I wouldn't say that. Dante's inferno came out a month after Bayonetta and God of War 3 a month after that. But yeah, overall, not much competition.

Tell me, does Vanquish have any chance at a sequel whatsoever? Any at all?

Platinum needs to make games that are more mainstream. Bayonetta was too wierd and vanquish looked like a ripoff of a bunch of american games. The reason Resident Evil, DMC, and all these other japenese games took off is because they had a great balance of gameplay, action, story, memorable charecters, etc.

bayonetta came out in january while nothing was out

90% of the people on my list are playing call of duty or halo right now, vanquish has no chance.

plus Kamiya makes the better games

Bayonetta redefined the entire genre. Vanquish didn't (or at least it wasn't as clear about it).

I'm not seeing any clear indication of that on Bayonetta's side, either.

This post is bad and you should feel bad.

Vanquish really wasn't a western looking game at all. The main character looks like a mecha outside of the cinematics. And he fights mechas.

Bayonetta was a spiritual successor to Devil May Cry. A series already popular in the west.

Should I buy Bayonetta? I only have a PS3 btw.

It depends on how interested you are in Bayonetta. I think it's the best game this generation even though I have a PS3, but the port is really, really terrible. It's still fun most of the time, but some parts are just unplayable, and high-level play is more difficult on the PS3 version.

If you really want to play the game, then definitely go for it - you'll probably still enjoy it. If you're on the fence, I wouldn't.

Wasn't the PS3 version of Bayonetta patched?

The ridiculous load times were reduced. Performance is otherwise still assy.
It actually looks a bit better after the patch, i think. Still not as good as the 360 version. (which i wish i got instead, damn my dad!)

buy it. it was patched for faster loading so differences aren't huge anymore. better sound on ps3 if you can appreciate that and have a nice setup.
Oh nice, I`m somewhat of an audiophile so I`ll definitely get it then :D

Vanquish has a generic premise, imitative box and forgettable name. It takes a bit of research to realize that there's anything special there. Bayonetta is instantly recognizable as being unique and was pushed hard on those merits. Vanquish seems plain and no great effort was made to correct that perception.

This is true I think...

even I, who love Mikamis previous games, was skeptical..

Now, having completed the game on normal and going for hard I really love it. It is more original than it seems also.

in my case, i think the widely spread ' 4 hours campaign with no multi player thus does not worth the price' a few days before Vanquish's release crap hurts it so damn bad. Out of 10 people I've asked, 9 of them didn't get it for that reason. the only one who bought it being me. :(

I say this because Vanquish was designed SPECIFICALLY with western audiences in mind. It was a third-person shooter. Cover based. Great boss battles. Tried to have a more 'American' lead character. While Bayonetta was a character action game with a crazy nuts female character, a thick coating of 'Japanese' flavor, and definitely more strange overall. I'm not sure which game Platinum was expecting to sell more, but I think it's interesting Bayonetta has outperformed Vanquish. Both games were marketed rather poorly by Sega, so I'm not sure that's the difference. Both games also reviewed high, with 8's and 9's across the board.

So what made the difference?

I would say that Vanquish was too Western by design and really cannot compete with the real Western "space marine" games (Halo for example). I liked the demo, but TBH, couldn't be bothered to buy another space ranger vs giant robots game. I got Bayonetta because it was different (and a bit sexy as well ;)

Just asked a couple of guys around the office. I'd never heard of it, one had but didn't know anything about it, and the third reads everything apparently so he explained to us what it was about.

Again, not trolling, I'd never heard of it. I just clicked this thread to see why some random game was being compared to Bayonetta.

no because Vanquish LOOKED like something that was designed with western audiences in mind, which means it came off looking very generic and forced. If all you saw was the coverart at the store you'd probably assume it was shovelware, or some shitty spin off of the Conduit or something.

yeah i saw the cover of Vanquish it looked terrible..It has the looks of a C grade action game on it.

Yes, it's a bit surprising for me. Bayonetta is very bizarre for an action game (I heard a lot of people complaining because of the female lead!), while Vanquish is closer to what western audience expects to see in a shooter. Maybe too close, but if stuff like Kane & Lynch can reach 1 million, I thought that even Vanquish could.

Dunno about sales, but I have to say, Vanquish further cemented the notion that Shinji Mikami is a fuck awesome game designer.

The song is #22. "2008 Tokyo Game Show Promotion" on Disk 5 of the original soundtrack.

I bought Bayonetta day 1. It's Kamiya, the king of action throne was empty this gen, etc...
Shit, I spent like 90 hours in DMC4 and it was somewhat of a disappointment. I just knew I'd be getting at least 100 hours out of Bayonetta before I bought it.

With Vanquish, once I heard there was no New Game+, that was a major turn off. It killed all the hype I had for it. I'll buy it someday but no more than $30.

Yes. The technical issues aren't enough to distract from the awesome, especially if you don't have the 360 version to compare it to. I've seen several great players on YouTube play the PS3 version exclusively (as far as I can tell). Go for it.

Sorry, I was going to post something, but I got distracted by that Bayonetta gif...for about five minutes...

*ahem* Anyway, yeah...oh yeah, now I remember!

It's strange when ANYTHING outsells Vanquish. Because it's Vanquish.

Wait a second,

What is the context of this discussion?

Bayonetta LTD is higher than Vanquish? Well it's been out for an extra 9 months?

Bayonetta sold better than Vanquish in the same time period? How do we know, didn't Vanquish come out Oct. 22 less than a month ago?

Where are the numbers? Is it a drastic difference? Are we jumping to conclusions?

Vanquish is aiming for a saturated market without ANY sort out of multiplayer component. Not to mention it went head to head with COD/MOH.

I would say this pretty much nails it, a shooter without MP or any RPG elements ala Bioshock is not going to sell today. Hideki Kamiya has much more of a presence and fanbase than Shinji Mikami also. people know that Kamiya knows how to make an action game. Vanquish is sort of uncharted territory for Mikami, he hasn't made a game too similar. I think all the hub bub about vanquish's length has also hurt it, im sort of holding off because of it.

I think we can assume that all the people who know the name Kamiya also know the name Mikami, so let's just assume that developer awareness was a total non-factor in the sales of these vidya games.

Oh so Vanquish is generic and didn't redefine the genre now? ..wow where's Amirox when you need him.

I liked Vanquish way more than Bayonetta.

Maybe because I prefer Ninja gaiden over DMC :lol
