Is Overwatch going to be popular on consoles?

To everyone complaining about the $60 price point, this is a game that comes bundled with its own season pass. All future characters and maps will be released free. That seems like a fair trade off when most games today come with an additional $40-$50 season pass that you basically need to have if you want to stay relevant.

Having said that, I think this game is going to do very well on console. I think the open beta is going to convert a lot of people.
 
It's funny reading this thread and seeing how ignorant Blizzard is when it comes to consoles. People have tried to correct them but content updates and patches for both PC and Consoles, just like D3, will come out on both sides at the same time.

Also $60 price tag for MP only? Did people forget that Siege just did that and it's still popular months later?
 
After HotS, I'm not even sure if it is going to be popular on PC too (which should be its strongest platform, since it is a Blizzard title).

Then all of my worries are gone, Overwatch will probably do stellar across all skews, the only dampening factor is the price point on consoles.

When have full priced, online only shooters done well on PC?

This could be the first because of Blizzard's name on the box, but I dunno why everyone is assuming this game is gonna be huge on PC. It seems so much more of a console game than a PC game to me.

I'm not sure if there's really any guarantee patches will be as quick. D3 was already on the market for a while and Overwatch is likely to receive updates pretty frequently after launch. So not sure if D3 is the best example. It'll be interesting to see.

It's $40 and it's Blizzard. It's already getting marketed pretty well and the closed beta has gotten a lot of buzz. It'll be fine.

It's a genre born on PC. are you kidding? Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, CounterStrike (a mod for a full priced game), this shit does great on PC because it's easy to build communities around them with the versatility the PC provides.

Not sure what D3 being out for a while has to do with anything, we're talking content updates.

This is the exact reason why I'm excited for Overwatch on consoles. Me and my friends used to play a shit ton of TF2 on 360 back in the day. We even played competitively against some other clans at the time. But Valve's neglect really destroyed the community.

I really think that Overwatch will be console players answer to the lack of TF2. Because there are quite a few people who play on console that really enjoy TF2 style gameplay. Its such slim pickings for that genre on console and that's probably in Overwatch's favor.

It'll probably not have nearly as big of a community as on PC but it'll do just fine.

Also that open beta in early May will definitely help it get traction on consoles.

That, and that all future characters and maps will be free. It'll really help keep the community alive since Blizzard has been really good at updating Diablo 3 on consoles.

The console version came out a few months after the PC expansion hit, so there was a bit of buffer time to ensure the versions were both current. Plus they weren't making a huge amount of updates on a daily basis or anything like that.

It's a Blizzard game with a lot of good buzz. At the very least, it's going to do well on PC.

Again, not really sure what you're saying in that regard though. They make patches, they come out on console the same day. It's been that way for over a year.
 
I think the game is not going to be a hit on console. It might sell well initially due to nice art and strong marketing. But I really don't see it lasting long or growing in popularity.

It's really a matter of how quickly they're going to be pushing updates when the game launches. With D3 a lot of minor fixes and patches were not needed on a daily basis or anything because the game was out for years already. So it'll be interesting to see if they keep the versions current this time around.
 
Overwatch is going to thrive on PC and Battleborn is going to thrive on console, probably.

Blizzard's console presence consists solely of Diablo III, yet they own the PC market and from my hands-on time with both, Battleborn seems super geared towards the console market.
 
I'm expecting a slow roll for this game. There's a very passionate starting fanbase that will buy in because it's Blizzard and the beta impressions have been quite positive (that includes me), but I think this game is only going to really take off with the following word of mouth.

My main thinking here is that the multiplayer-only is indeed a hard sell to the average games consumer, despite a few enthusiasts pointing out the extreme value that they've gotten out of recent multiplayer-only titles. I think the vibrant aesthetic and toned-down violence of the game might be a tough sell on the average games consumer these days, too... It might not be spoke aloud much anymore, but I still think that average Joe game buyer is still of the mindset that they only want to play M-rated, "mature-themed" or "realistic" titles.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more popular on console. I think D3 got more popular on console somehow and that shit supposed to be a PC centric game?
 
I think it will sell well on both and consoles will probally have mote at the start. But in long run pc will habe more players to continue playing it.
 
I'm expecting bomba.. There's no hype by anyone in real life I meet about this. I'm not certain Blizzard means anything at all to console gamers either.

Then again, it's just not a game I'm interested in really at all, so there's that probably skewing my view.. but I just don't feel any heat about this game so far.

Well Rainbow Six is more a well known name. So you get that early hype and sales already just from the name. Same with Battlefront and Star Wars, Overwatch isnt really. Maybe Blizzard but that is not as much on consoles as it is on PC. It all depends on the open beta and marketing. Because for example i have alot of MP friends but i asked them a couple of days ago if they knew Overwatch. And out of the 10 only 1 knew it. Where two months before the release everybody was talking about Siege and Battlefront. :)

I know it sold a lot but the population, it's dead as fuck. It was popular at launch due to D2, sold all that and offered WoW players the game and afterwards they've been just trying to recover from bad word until RoS and console release.

In no way is the PC version dead as fuck commpared to the console version. Perhaps the number of people in public games isn't as high as it could be, but that's because people have learned to avoid the fuck outta those. Aren't we talking about a sales difference of like 20+ million?

Anyway, Overwatch... It'll be popular on consoles for a while, maybe even a few years. It'll be somewhat alive on PC in 10 years time, but to what extent, who really knows?

Funny that out of the 30 million copied sold, more than half is AFTER RoS, including console sales. And "dead as fuck" is completely pure false BS. On PC it is super active due to seasons, on console people mostly play solo and/or with friends to avoid hackers so it is hard to gauge.
 
I haven't been following too much about the game, but is there no TDM game mode at all? Objective stuff is good and all but I much prefer TDM
 
The Blizzard name will ensure it has a fanbase, but I don't know if it can extend into the mainstream. There are so many 'hero shooters' hitting shelves this year, Overwatch could easily drown in the mix.

Pretty sure it's the others that'll drown. Production values, marketing, known support, more marketing, even more marketing.

I don't see Overwatch getting lost in the mix.
 
Also, I think Battlefield hardline proved plenty of console players will purchase a shooter when there's a severe lack of of them on the market at the time.
 
If it's as well realized as Diablo 3 on console then I could see it being super popular. Though it all hinges on how well the game feels on a pad to control and Blizzard's willingness to keep the game up to date. I am super curious what Blizzard considers polished console controls, because it's an extremely difficult thing to get right. Though if there were any developer to create good feeling stuff, it's Blizzard.

Blizzard accels at looking at a budding genre and one-upping the competition by making a higher production value game that is extremely approachable and easy to pick up. They then support their games with more content over a long period of time, better than any other studio out there. Overwatch won't get lost in the mix. It will rise to the top of the mix and stay prominent for quite a while.

Not to be rude, but the people you meet in real life probably don't represent the entirety of the global gaming public. Just because your friends aren't interested in it, doesn't mean it won't sell tons of copies. As a counterpoint, a lot of people I know IRL are super excited about this game.

To give another perspective, just take me. Ever since COD:BO I haven't found a multiplayer shooter I didn't despise. Most shooters have gone so far down the annoying ADS, low TTK, TDM, killstreak, attachment, perk, loadout rabbit hole that I just more and more frustrated with every subsequent iteration of every multiplayer shooter. I basically resigned myself to becoming a purely single player gamer since I just couldn't enjoy myself with them anymore, and in fact they just infuriated me to no end.

Fast forward to last fall when I got into the Overwatch beta. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say I have played this game every single day (give or take a few weeks) since last fall. This game is everything that I missed about FPS. It's fast, it's team based, it requires strategy, and it's simple and straightforward. There are no attachments and loadouts to fuck around with, there's no min-maxing and abusing the most overpowered gun. Each hero has 2-3 abilities that synergize with your team and/or counter an opposing hero. Best of all, there's a hero for every type of gamer. Whether you like sniping, flanking, melee, defending, rushing, tanking, or healing, there's a hero for you.

I've rambled on a bit, but all I'm saying is I think the open beta will speak for itself. I was hooked and I practically wrote off MP FPS games a few years ago. Once the general public gets their hands on this game, I'm sure it will become very clear how high quality this game is.

There's only one Hero Shooter coming out this year and that's battleborn.

Paragon is a MOBA.
Paladins is in beta and it doesn't look to have a full release anytime soon.
Gigantic is a MOBA, still in beta.
LawBreakers? Early 2017.

Overwatch literally has no one competing with it but Battleborn.
 
I'm confident this game is going to do really well on consoles as long as Blizzard doesn't mess up. Biggest new IP of the year is where I'm placing my bet.
