Yeah I literally had to cut open my battery, and unsolder a circuit with an xacto knife to get CDs on it. Then I had to use a pencil led to re etch the solder marks to make the circuit again. It was kinda ridiculous I remember liversting as I did it. Felt heroic.

Depending on what firmware you hacked the PSP on you needed equipment ranging from just a card reader to a separate battery or even a particular game.

DS always needed a card reader, sure, but it has a way higher total of software sold. PSP's software problem especially in the west isn't just down to piracy.

Hell back when it was first released the PSP was more or less the best possible device to watch video on that could fit in your pocket. I know tons of people who bought it just for that or for that and one game.

I bet a decent part of the reason why it fell off a cliff in the west was because of the proliferation of later gen idevices and smartphones in addition to the lack of software that really stood out for western audiences.

I think there's some truth to that. A lot of folks didn't get the psp for games, they got it for other shit like you said. The DS didn't do much else besides games.

Also, custom firmware back in the day wasn't the easiest shit in the universe. Some people had to hack open their batteries, or go buy a pandora battery. The r4 cards are simple. download games, put them on the card, put the card in the ds and play. Much easier than early psp hacking.

I want some big 3rd party games for starters. Some dream games would be Borderlands, Burnout, Elder Scrolls, maybe Dead Space or even Assassin's Creed (especially with multiplayer).

From Sony I want original franchises. A new game from Sucker Punch or Media Molecule would be good to see. I'm not sure if they're likely to do something on PS3 before PS4 comes out. And of course, 1st party franchises. Twisted Metal would've been a better fit on Vita than PS3. I think Infamous would be a great candidate. God of War of course has already had great handheld entries.

I'd like to see something to scratch the Demon's Souls itch. Demon's Souls 2 from FROM would be incredible. But even a close approximation from an internal team would be welcome. Especially if they added coop and streamlined the systems a bit. Soul Sacrifice looks interesting, but it's clearly a different kind of game.

why....why in gods name would you want those third party games when you just know its gonna just end up as shitty half-baked handheld ported games? This was exactly the downfall for the psp. Exactly.

The original and already existing software you want from sony is the exact reasoning behind what everyone else in this thread is stating. Sony don't have a BIG card to play to push vita consoles. When nintendo was in this doom and gloom state, they had games on the horizon that everyone, even the most nintendo hater ever, knew would sell consoles. Twisted metal won't do anything and god of war is so done its not even funny. I can't for the life of me think of any game that will surpass or even catch up with the 3ds software wise, I just can't, there is nothing they can announce to excite this console's fanbase outside of internet forums. Nothing.

I disagree. The fact that you had to go out of your way and give your credit card info to mail order from what's most likely some shady website, isn't exactly what I'd expect your average parent to do.

With PSP you already have what's needed. Even then I doubt this is sort of the thing most parents bothered to do. PSP appealed to an older demographic that was more knowledgeable and driven to do this than little Timmy's mom and dad.

And since when were DS software sales ever in the toilet like PSP? Over 70 million units sold and what were the sales figures for the top selling games? A joke for an installed base of that size. Sony wasn't embroiled in a cat and mouse game with hackers for nothing.
I hardly think online shopping is quite the impediment you're portraying here, and that's if consumers even needed to go online (they wouldn't where I live). Tell mom to buy a card online or download cfw files online and install through exploits, which do you think mom considers easier?

And yes, DS software sales went south dramatically (literally halving over the course of a year) when R4 and similar devices exploded in the mainstream. Happened in Europe first, the America the next year. Nintendo's own games weathered things relatively okay, but kids focused 3rd party shovelware (like Ubi's Petz line) utterly collapsed.

Because those are the kinds of games I want to play on the go. Especially now that the controls are comfortable, and can match the console experience. Certain PSP games like Syphon Filter, both Metal Gear Solids, GTA, and others just would've been more fun with 2 sticks. This was PSP's greatest weakness. Sony took a risk having 2 analog sticks jut out of Vita's face, and I want them to pay off.

I don't want these games to "sell consoles". I want them to play.

Sony needs to start shipping every Vita with at least 4GB memory. Vita could of had a much better launch and sales today if it wasnt for Sony dumb decisions.

Ok, let me contact sony and let them know what YOU want to play. I'm gonna tell them to fuck vita sell figures because its not important to YOU, YOU just want game tailored to YOU........dude, its everything now and days. Vita do not carry a budget of a GBA game or a smartphone app. If the console aint selling, developers aint developing on said console. You think that game publishers is looking at vita right now and saying.."yea, we can make up development costs and make much more on sales." fuck no they're not. They're looking at the 3DS because its selling faster and better and nothing is changing on the vita front for that to change.

Weren't "console-esque" games (MH and GTA) the highest selling software versus something original, like, say, Patapon or Lumines?

Thanks.

Could you also ask Sony when they'll put up PS1 games for Vita.

Also, some people don't care about sales figures. I would love console ports on my Vita, as that's how I prefer to play them. I, too, don't care whether or not they sell systems, since I don't play sales figures.

I don't think the Vita can be successful if it chases after mobile gaming. The hardware was designed to play core games, and that's what it should play. The fact that Vita can possibly do justice to an Elder Scrolls or Borderlands is its biggest differentiator.

I agree with this. Vita doesn't have any attention-grabbing "gimmick", per se, but the best I believe it can do is through advocating fully fledged console games on a portable device. I'd really like for Sony to expand Remote Play to all games, but I don't really see that happening.

I think that no one is considering the huge impact that the release of the pssuite will probably have, a lot of indie, ios and android developers will make games and apps for vita(we'll have various browsers to choose from! XD ), am i the only one excited thinking about the possibilities?

Nope, Om Nom...just waiting on my engine to support PSSuite...

Wooow picking up a like new vita for $150 today on Craigslist. I asked him why he was selling for so low and he said apparently people thought 200 was too high... Comes with a game, case, and memory card which he supposedly spent over 100 on...

True story :O. But I won't believe it until I have it in my hands later today

Most vitas go for like 180-200 on Craigslist. You're getting a bad deal if it doesn't at least have an 8gb, mint condition, and $200

Unknown : 2

Do I forget any other interesting, upcoming, announced (or almost confirmed) game?

BTW I found this when looking for a Soul Sacrifice video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JryQXilMj4

It's good to see so many strong releases on the way, but how many of those are unique to the platform? I count only three or four.

It would be also interesting to list only games which have had actual gameplay/screens released for it and not just a logo on the screen. We all were there when GT Mobile made every list for the first 5 years of the PSP's life.

Lot of people prefer certain games to be played on handhelds. I have no issue with dual releases.

If I could instantly transform all of my console games into portable versions with a slight downgrade graphically I would. I like being able to play wherever I want as opposed to being tethered to a TV.

Just checked wikipedia / wikia and updated the post.

I'd nice to do the same for 3DS, I would say it doesn't have a bigger proportion of new IPs in its the interesting upcoming games (or well, at least in the already released). There people doesn't fuck with 'Mario/Metal Gear/Resident Evil/Monster Hunter/Zelda/Pilotwings/long etc is not exclusive for the device' and similar stuff.

BTW I didn't know that the Assasin's Creed for Vita had already a name (link in Spanish, I assume there will be the same in English) :

I never get this kind of attitude, honestly, since their ability to sell or their sales figures will directly impact their ability to continuously support the environment in which you play your game.

To just don't care about that is to be really disconnected from the reality of things.

Indeed the deal was legit....mint condition, hot shots golf, a really nice case, box, and 4gb memory card....

The guy was like....I don't think it came with a USB cable and I had to point out to him that it was connected to the AC adapter -_-

kinda felt bad buying this from him for so little..

I'm just not sure how much impact this will have on the wider market. Much of the appeal of these indie games and apps is that they are on your phone which you take everywhere. I just don't see that as a selling point for the vita.

Adjusting for PS3/Vita "exclusives" and games that are barely more than vaporware (no title or timeframe and there's no reason to count "unknowns"), I think a more accurate count looks like this:

Port / enhaced port / port with new stuff but sold as new game / remake / multiplatform : 14 (not 13)
Exclusive IP : 3 (not 5)
Exclusive game, existing IP : 2 (not 4)

Those numbers will definitely change post-E3, but right now, the outlook is grim.

To just don't care about that is to be really disconnected from the reality of things.

I don't see it playing out as you say. For Microsoft Xbox has all kinds of strategic importance. Even if it were losing money, MS would keep funding it because they don't want to miss out on controlling the living room the way they screwed up the browser and both mobile formats. They're playing an unimpressive game of catchup in all of these, but they're doing well in the living room, which is going to be a big technological focus in the coming years.

Sony is not really in a position to compete with Apple, Roku, Google and Microsoft for the livingroom, but they're going to try since they've got as good a box as any. Sony has done a collaboration with Google on the Android TV, and that partnership makes sense to me. It's not clear how much Sony is trying to "own" the internet-connected livingroom.

They're mainly an electronics company, but they also have big publishing studios in music and video. Clearly Sony would like to be a digital media distributor, but they're facing an uphill battle from Apple. I think the size of SCE, suggests that Sony's approaching videogames the way they do movies and music. It's another entertainment medium, and Sony's a big publisher.

And famously, PS3 was the trojan horse for bluray. I don't have any clue whether bluray licensing recouped the PS3 losses, but it was clearly a priority for the whole company.

So I don't think it's as simple as you say. There are other dynamics at play. Despite the losses in Playstation, the former VP is now CEO of the whole company. It must say something about where the board wants to go.

There's no point in making a list if it's not nearly complete.
I can think over 5 games not on the list just off the top of my head. Some titles might not be fully accurate.

-Urban Trials
-Tales of Innocence R
-KickBeat
-AR games, which are going strong.
-Foosball cross platform game.
-Game with the princess that's exclusive I belive Dokuto or something like that.
-Malicious
-Ruin or whatever the new name is.
-Smart As..

Plenty of games making their way.
One problem is that PSP is still popular choice for developers in Japan.

Vita is not dead, nowhere close.

...What?

I am not sure I understand... are you perhaps quoting the wrong person...? :)

BTW, is it really correct that, as per current US release lists, there are literally no retail Vita games currently scheduled for release in the two months between Lego Batman 2 (June 19) and Ragnarok Odyssey (August 21)? Maybe LBP will be released in that window.

08.21.12 Ragnarok Odyssey (Xseed Games)
08.28.12 Madden NFL 13 (EA Sports)

Both lineups should fill out more with specific dates in the coming weeks though. We know NSMB2 is coming in August for example.

GS has LBP release date set for 6/27 (Wed.)

If it were actually coming that soon, I don't think they'd have started the beta so recently, and Sony would probably have announced the release date today (if not earlier) alongside the box art and new video.

And it looks like GS is actually currently listing it with a placeholder date of Dec. 31, meaning they don't have an actual one. I think the 6/27 date was in their system until a week or two ago, though.

Man, I didn't realize just how horrible the 3DS lineup is there. That's really bad. :\

3DS lineup definitely isn't great, but at least it's less barren and there are two games coming in the latter part of the summer that are guaranteed to move hardware.
