Is there any film with a better sourced soundtrack than Goodfellas?

No. There isn't.

What's more, you can listen to each of these songs and instantly picture the scenes they are now inexorably bound to, so perfect is Scorsese's use of these tracks.

Rags to Riches
Speedo
Then He Kissed Me
Look In My Eyes
Life Is But A Dream
Sunshine of Your Love
Atlantis
Gimme Shelter
Jump Into the Fire
Layla (Piano Exit)
Can't We Be Sweethearts?

Sorry guys, it was a rhetorical question. You didn't actually have to try and reply with these embarrassing attempts to measure up to Goodfellas' Soundtrack.

It's OK to admit that Forrest Gump has you beat. There's no shame in it. I mean, I love me some Goodfellas. One of my favorite movies ever. But Forrest Gump just plain has it beat out in the soundtrack.

As Sculli said, a great list of songs does not automatically make a great soundtrack. Goodfellas (and Casino) is so good because each song fits each scene perfectly.

Yet how many of those songs when heard in isolation immediately conjure Forrest Gump to mind? Goodfellas has a 100% batting average when it comes to song-defining scenes.

I think we can agree on that. But most of Forrest Gump I can see in my mind with their scenes as well, especially because the movie throws itself in with historical moments that coincide with the time periods of the songs.

Goodfellas is one of the best. I may prefer Mean Streets though.
Pulp Fiction also one of the best. Death Proof soundtrack has it's moments.
Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums are pretty great too.
Also American Graffiti

I'll have to agree with Sculli here.

these tunes are locked in now. It's an amazing feat by Scorsese.

I wonder if he has the songs in mind when actually filming those scenes.

Like a lot of posters here, I think that Scorsese and Tarantino have the most consistently great soundtracks.

Since nobody mentioned Reservoir Dogs yet, I will. I wouldn't rank it as high as Pulp Fiction or Goodfellas, it's still a damn good soundtrack and the movie uses it very effectively.

Pulp Fiction shits on this soundtrack.

Movies like Forrest Gump and Goodfellas use music to cheat and put you in a time frame. The character is living in XXXX year and now we are going to use a popular song from that time to illustrate this. It's almost cliche and trite.

QT uses the music in PF to fit the mood he is trying to convey, to create another layer of texture in the scene.

Sculli, despite disagreeing with you on a number of things, we are 100% on this.

I've been saying this for years.

From the opening rat-pack era pop through the 60s and 70s msuic and ending with the Sex Pistols cover of My Way, it's perfect. The soundtrack tells the story of the movie, and that ending is awesome. Plus, contrasting punk My Way with Layla is genius.

Tarantino indeed has brilliant soundtracks, don't get me wrong. But Goodfellas is amazing.

And Casino isn't half the movie Goodfellas is.

I might like it better than Pulp Fiction (that's high praise) but it might be because I like Res Dogs slightly more than Pulp Fiction.

All of this is arguing about which of several amzing movies/sountracks is better. All God Tier.

Stuck in The Middle with You alone makes it a part of this conversation.
