Is this the year a downloadable game gets GotY?

I will definitively have DLC only and handheld games if I do make it to an actual top 10. Stuff like Mark of the ninja, Journey, Fez are worthy of praise despite their flaws. The Walking dead is still incomplete since it's missing the conclusion, but I expect to see it in the GAF top 10. On the handheld front, we could see Kid Icarus earning a spot in the top 10 along with RE: Revelations.

Given that this is a lackluster year for AAA titles, I wouldn't be surprised to see a DLC win the GAF goty. Problem is that it must be played by enough players and I only see The Walking dead who probably has enough appeal to get the votes needed (multiplat and solid production values/polish and has earned extra exposure thx to PS+ and steam sales).

Only downloadable game of high calibur that I played this year was Journey. I really loved the game and thought it was a very unique experience, but I guess I just didn't go as crazy for it as people on GAF did, so personally I don't think I could call it my GOTY. (easily top 5 though given the overall lackluster releases so far)

Bastion was my goty last year and nothing downloadable this year has even been close to that personally so idk.

Mark of the Ninja just couldn't keep my interest.

Journey had about two 5 minute chunks of greatness surrounded by a couple of hours of boredom.

Trials is trials.

Fez is an overhyped bad platformer with an ARG.

I couldn't get into the walking dead either due to zombies just making me cringe 100% of the time at this point.

I do think it is odd for one system owners to vote on GOTY games. It is like an Oscar voter only watching half the movies.

Here is the shocking secret behind NeoGAF's GotY award:
It is worth nothing. Every list that isn't in the top 2-3% as the most intelligent lists with a lot of reach (which is up to the reader to figure out) just waters it down.

Journey is probably my IEOTY (interactive entertainment of the year). No idea what my GOTY is, probably Journey too since I don't really enjoy game games anymore (semi-serious). ;p

Mark of the Ninja is probably my GotY leader this year. I haven't played a ton of games this year though and it feels like kind of a weak year, but it really is a fantastic game.

Most people would have posted that and anyone interested who wasn't familiar with the game would be shit out of luck because the poster rarely, if ever, names the game they're showing off.

You haven't disclosed the name of the game, but you've gone one better. Clicking on that gif leads me to the OT, and all the information I or anyone else needs.

So, thanks.
Why thank you sir. That was very kind of you.

Journey and the Walking Dead should be contenders, yeah. Hotline Miami too. Halo 4 will probably get most of the big media ones, maybe Xcom can snag a few.

It'll be a tough one for me because of MoTN as well. I've loved a lot of other games this year, and those other games offer a ton more content and modes and long term value, but MoTN is just about flawless.

I'd argue it's a bit too short. I really wanted to see more, and I felt it was just not enough. Gameplay-wise, yeah, it's flawless.

I will also say kid icarus uprising deserves it.

As much as I love journey its simplicity is a double edged sword for me. I understand why its so simple, but because of it and despite how epic the concept is, I had mor fun with kid icarus.

Walking Dead and Hotline Miami are pretty damn close to taking it for me this year. So yes, at least for my personal GOTY candidates a downloadable game may very well be it.

Damn, at least tell us what was your favorite game this year?
So we can rip it to shreds, too

Everyone should check out FTL and Hotline Miami, even (or perhaps especially) if you're not a PC gamer. They'll run on anything and provide hours of deliciously addictive, well-honed entertainment.

Outside of XCOM, I could see a downloadable winning Giant Bomb's GOTY. ME3 is out. Vinny isn't too hot on Dishonored and I'm not sure Jeff has even finished it. AC3 definately won't win. I don't see them giving it to Halo 4 or Blops II. I could really see something like Mark of the Ninja or The Walking Dead or Journey being in the top 10 at least.

They all seems to love Sleeping Dogs, so maybe that?

Have any reviews even come through?

Played it at the EG Expo, if I had to sum it up in one word I'd say it was clunky =/

I really think XCOM will win with Giant Bomb, it's the only game I've seen that they have all enthusiastically enjoyed.

TWD is more movie then game IMO. Giving it GOTY would set a bad example to publishers.

Oh come on! Given the shit publishers have put out this year in the AAA space, I'd be more than happy to give it to TWD.

Tekken Tag 2 is the game I keep coming back to. Everything in between has just been a roadblock.

But no critic will ever give that GOTY, because none of them have the mental capacity to play a fighting game with more than 5 moves per character.

So I guess it would be cool if Journey won big. I actually proposed that idea in the Halo 4 thread not long ago.

I doubt that any major video game website will give its overall Game of the Year to a game that is not a 50/60 dollar retail disc backed by a massive marketing campaign.

Because those are the "real" games.

Same reason they're never going to pick a portable game, either.

Mark of the Ninja is pretty brilliant. Right now it's between it and XCOM fighting for my top spot, but I still have more to play.

Doesn't seem odd to me. Not everyone own every system. It took til the end of this generation for me to eventually get every system.

I see no downloadable game winning imo.

Then those votes should only be on the games for the system they own. Overall winners should be decided on by multisystem owners IMO.

Besides Mass Effect 3 (which had giant backlash) and Xenoblade (which a lot of game reviewers didn't play), Mark of the Ninja and Journey have the best aggregate review scores of the year. Dishonored, XCOM, Halo 4, and ME3 will probably take some GotYs, but do you think mainstream sites will finally be able to give treat downloadable games equally by giving them Game of the Year? Looking at the NeoGAF media GotY threat, it looks like Bastion, Minecraft, and Desktop Tower Defense were the only downloadable games to win GotY from multiple sites ever and they only ended up with two sites giving them that honor each.

No.

Xenoblade is the game of the generation, let alone game of the year.

Dunno, for me XBLA/PSN only games were really lackluster this year.

Dishonored definitely deserve it since so far nothing even come close to it, but sadly I doubt many sites will give the goty award just because most of the sites/magazines give it to Bethesda for Skyrim last year.

Just like Half Life 2 inspired other heavily scripted shooters like CoD. You can't blame one good game for all the bad apples it spawns.

Also, if you're angry at The Walking Dead, you should blame Heavy Rain more since it got GOTY from sites.

It sets a good example. People only care about it because the writing is so good, no one's going to support some lazy big publisher version. This and Obsidian games show how much people will forgive when the writing is so good.

That being said it's an adventure game it can get away with almost no gameplay. A RPG or action game can't.
