Such a sucky yet awesome game, the demo was rather long too so me and a friend would play it for about 2-3 months until he owned the game, then we played that a fair bit too :D

The sequel was not as good but still fun.

Siren: New Translation is my pick (was also the best game of 2008).

It's one of the few horror games that made me feel genuinely unsettled - so much so that I actually had to persevere to finish the game. The story is fantastic, taking on a fairly unique episodic-but-not-quite narrative structure that sees multiple characters intertwining to create a lengthy, interesting adventure.

There are so many great locations in the game such as an abandoned hospital, a mine and, oh god..... that house. You do have to replay them a few times, but it's usually a joy as different characters have different objectives and abilities (the little girl for example is completely helpess).

And of course let's not forget the amazing '70s exploitation horror soundtrack and complete mindfuck of an ending.

I started playing this the other day.
Definitely has the right atmosphere, but man, the atrocious voice acting really takes me out of it.

Unfortunately, Kalisto went bankrupt before they could complete Nightmare Creatures 3. Ubisoft owns the IP but has done nothing with it and didn't seem interested in finishing NC3.

Here's a new one I found: Twilight Street Explorers/Yuyami Dori Tankentai/夕闇通り探検隊

I'd say it strikes the tone of Paranoia Agent or Gabriel Knight. There are 3 kids growing up who get up to mischief in their neighborhood. They end up discovering a mystery, and then it gets exciting, and then it gets horrifying. It's a pretty neat graphic adventure game.

More of a Halloween game than a survival horror game. Monster Party on the NES. It has all of those classic horror monsters that you would find in the Castlevania games and more.

Friday the 13th on NES is still chill inducing if only because you NEVER know when that asshole will show up and just rush you. It's also hard as hell (I've only beaten it once that I can remember).

Haunting Ground/Demento is just creepy as hell and I've had a number of "oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap" moments playing it.

I like these. Some are horror, some aren't, but I think they're fitting for the topic:
  • Resident Evil 4 - One of the best games ever.
  • Resident Evil 5 - Yeah it gets hate but I enjoyed every moment of it.
  • Condemned - The melee action did give me some chills.
  • Dead Space - Pretty cool space horror action.
  • Dante's Inferno - Creepy hell setting is disturbing.
  • Deadly Premonition - So weird that it's creepy! :lol
  • Luigi's Mansion - Doesn't have to be a mature game to be a Halloween game!

The original Silent Hill! Although I have no idea how it holds up today, especially gameplay-wise, which I fear must be kind of excruciating. :P

Favorites, not necessarily scariest

1- Silent Hill 2
2- Fatal Frame 2
3- Resident Evil 4
4- Haunting Ground
5-REmake
6-Silent Hill
7- Fatal Frame
8- Condemned
9- Clock Tower 3
10- Tecmos Deception

Most Overrated
1- Dead Space
2 - Penumbra

I'm curious to try Amnesia, but I could never get into the Penumbra games at all.

Condemned 2 has
a rabid grizzly bear sequence!
How did the developers steal my nightmares? A game where you had to escape from infected animals without being able to shoot everything would be so scary. In Far Cry 2 I always imagined how cool it would be if monsters were just everywhere and killing people and the safe houses would actually become a place to hole up and not just a save point. We always get open-world crime games, Spider-Man games, and even racing games, but no horror ones. It might get old like the other free roam games, but I think it would be cool, if it just had a little structure.

The game is still pretty unnerving (finished it more than 7x). I recently played it on the PSP/PS3.

Just placed an order for these on Amazon:

I used to own them all, but stupidly sold them. Getting them all back for just under a hundred. Not too shabby.

Anyway, these are my ultimate scary games. Especially the first 2. There's nothing quite like playing Fatal Frame alone in the dark.

While I don't really think it's considered a horror game, Alan Wake has been the most terrifying game I've played in recent memory. If you have a good subwoofer then you'll appreciate the awesome use of LFE to make you even more uneasy. It doesn't get enough credit but the use of audio in that game is just awesome.

Silent Hill 1, Eternal Darkness, Siren New Translation, Condemned Criminal Origins.

Only games that made jump out of my chair lol

Zombies Ate My Neighbours. Great with a friend, and awesome soundtrack

A classic and my favorite horror game by far. This game also gave me some of my greatest memories of gaming.

Fatal Frame 4 is managing to scare the shit out of me at the moment. The last game that made me yell was Fatal Frame 2.

Silent Hill
Siren Blood Curse

This exactly. Only two games to actually scare me. Both of them give me a totally uneasy feeling, and they're the only two games to feel like a realistic end of the world scenario to me. I should play both next week. :D

never got the love for Eternal Darkness.
I love survival horror games, so I've tried it 3 times.

The graphics are too cartoony, it isn't scary and the fighting is awkward. Why is this game so beloved?

The story is pretty good. That's why I liked it, but I also quite liked the overall atmosphere and enjoyed the gameplay.
