iWaggle's Killzone 3 Move breakdown vidoc (pointer shooter 101)

I'm nearing the end on this one now and it's pure gold!

TTP shyly hid this in the Move thread but this is an half-an-hour long vidoc breaking down Killzone 3's Move implementation. It's also an excellent resource for how pointer shooters work as well, Guerrilla has gone all out.
TTP's excellent work absolutely deserves it's own thread:

Can't believe it's finished. Took me a whole week of studying, filming, editing, encoding, commentary, plus two.5 extra days of YouTube uploader acting up and unwilling to end the process correctly. Fix this shit Guerrilla!

Anyway... :)

Discover how the upcoming Killzone 3 works and plays like with the PlayStation Move motion controller in this exclusive (and spoilers free) video analysis of Guerrilla's latest, based on a demo preview code printed last November and featuring a single section from the game.

This is my longest video to date, lasting almost half an hour (!), so you might want to take a seat and fasten your pants belts before hitting play below.

Enjoy!

It's certainly a very well-made and informative video; TTP does a hell of a better job than many of the bigger game sites, going into the technicalities and stuff that gamers ARE curious about. I'm surprised Sony hasn't realized how much he is doing for the Move, IMO.

Yes this is awesome so deserves its own thread because let's face it, this game is probably the biggest reason why most people bought a Move.

Pretty sweet. I wonder if there will be a Trophy for beating KZ3 with a Move controller.
I'll probably just stick to a DS3 for my first play through though.

Studying for finals so can't watch the entire thing. Question: Does it work well / and or better than DS3?

Works like a dream.

As for the vs DS3 thing, it's hard to say. It's a question of feeling to me. It just feels more satisfying. But I'd say picking up targets it's much easier with the Move (with the DS3 you usually have to tap-tap on the stick to finalize crosshair position before pulling the trigger) as well as following moving ones. It's also easier to throw grenades at different directions in front of you as you don't move the camera so you can keep an eye on the battlefield ahead of you. Like you have two enemies hiding to either sides of the screen: you toss a 'nade to one without losing track of the other one. Same applies for shooting in the same circumstances.

I also love the controls consistency in that I can set everything to hold and still have easy access to all functionalities without having to knot my fingers around the controller to zoom or throw a 'nade.

I also like to reload via wrist flick or melee via forward thrust as I don't need to move my thumb away from the Move button (which is used to crouch/cover).

Well TTP, you have convinced me. Time to finally buy move.

Incredible job with the videos as always too. My only issue is how loose the gun looks with move. They really need to tighten the bounding box in my opinion, or at least give us the option of fixing the move controller X hair to the centre of the screen!

Yeah just watched this.
There is nobody who does this better. Awesome job TTP.

Did you also try the gun attachement?

Hyped as fuck for this game.

Nice video TTP, as always.

I personally hate this kind of "pointer" control. I can't stand the goddamn bounding boxes, the poor camera control because of them and the general twitchyness of the crosshairs, and KZ3 is no different from what I see here.

Great breakdown TTP, nobody does this as good as you do.

The way Killzone 3 kinda has a dynamic bounding box is really interesting. I also think I might play with the adaptive aiming. That seems to be a clever solution. Looks like I might finally have a game to play with the Move.

That X you typed there reminded me of something I was thinking about lately.

What if the vertical cursor movement was "fixed" (in that the cursor moves along with the camera up and down) and the horizontal one kept within the usual BB?

Basically think of an nonexistant vertical deadzone. After all, you only need horizontal deadzone (for infinite camera rotation) but not a vertical one (since you can't do infinite backflips :D). The cursor would only move along a central, horizontal line when looking left and right, with any up/down movement causing camera tilt up/downwards (to different degrees depending on angle of course).

I wonder if any devs tried that.

I was already going to buy Move for KZ3, but that video cemented it.

Nice video except for the camera rotation part which I had to skip since the screen spun forever and made me dizzy.

A few Wii games have done it, notably The Conduit. I think it works really well.

After watching that vid i couldn't be more hyped for KZ3 with move. seems like Guerrilla done an outstanding job. Pity about no move co-op, considering sony have been saying that move uses so few system resources i would have thought it would be manageable... but i'm not a dev so i haven't a clue.

Anyway, thanks for that vid TTP, possibly your finest work :)

KZ3 with Move + no cursor + no assists looks amazing, will definitely use this layout instead of the DS3.
Though I'm glad I have the choice so I can choose the better/more fun input method.

The 'dynamic line' is great. Some people have disliked the 'aircraft' nature of pointer controls but stuff like that helps. Really shows iWaggle3D's attention to detail.

Great work as always, TTP.
Nice to see Move works great and Guerilla implemented the controls really well with both Move and DS3, in addition to include options to fit all kind of tastes.
Time to buy a Navi controller.

Really impressive. Glad that GG didn't just tackled in Move support and actually made an effort to make it work well.

Also that Helghast doing a melee finisher move on another AI was pretty awesome

Excellent.

KZ3 is, by far, this biggest thing to hit the Move, even if it's not built from the ground up for it. I'll have to get a Navi controller soon, and I'll probably get that new gun shell casing for it. I'm goin all out, bitch.

It'll probably take a lot of practice in single player before I'm comfortable playing online with the Move, but hopefully I can get used to it enough to cut the DS3 out all together. Can't wait.

The 'twist' in the end was amazing! :P

Would be awesome if you can play the entire game like that i.e. fighting both sides (or *gasp* fighting alongside Helghast).

You kinda can actually. Well, within a single level section. But you get slaughtered really really fast by both sides. :D

Hits from allies (well, ex ones) deal A LOT of damage so you die super fast. Also, when you kill one of your allies, another one runs in from a spawn point at the back of the map so you end up fighting against dudes coming from all over the place.

I should try that more and see how much I can survive. Hopefully there is a Gold trophy for that :D

Amazing Job TTP!

Awesome video. I'd be willing to definitely give this a shot now, I wasn't too big on Move controls in a shooter, but it definitely looks like it works competently. This type of work deserves a try.

Interesting. Is there a video of that somewhere?

Edit - Have rewatched this and it seems like camera moves a bit even when cursor is still within the deadzone. Pretty cool. I like that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4SDlFPMKf8

That's basically akin to what Sports Champions does in the selection screen. I wonder why Move devs don't use that solution? Looks very neat. Really minimizes the "slapping" feeling you get when transitioning from within the deadzone to outside the deadzone. Super cool.

Do we know what the pricing is gonna be on the sharpshooter?

zSajG.jpg

It'll look kinda goofy, but I definitely want it. I've played a few FPS's and rail shooters on the Wii, and I tried MAG with Move recently, and I like the pointer controls but it doesn't feel quite right when I'm just pointing the wand controller at the screen. With the casing, the controller could be held level instead of the kinda uncomfortable angle I'd have to extend my arm at. Hopefully the price isn't too ridiculous.

Awesome video as always TTP, keep up the fantastic work.

Love the Move implementation. Looks really well done. Seems i will definitely be playing it through with my Move :)

Cool, $40 is a little high but it'll probably be worth it in the long run as long as we see a few more decent FPS's that support the Move (Resistance 3 would be nice). I'll have to get the Navi as well, so that'll set me back $70 but I played KZ2 for over 120 hours, so I'll probably get my monies worth in the end.

After watching this.... Rage, Portal, Duke Nukem Forever, Dead Space 2 ALL need to incorporate Move controls.

don't make me spend more money.

I need a Move bundle of nav, disco stick, and cam for $100. Make it so.

I'm eye-balling that too! I'm sure it will provide a better/immersive experience. Depending of the price I'll buy one to use in Killzone and SOCOM. Too bad TTP didn't have one to try it out and give us feedback... And another excellent job TTP with the video! Thanks for allyour work put on these.

It would be cool if, to throw 'nades, you would have to actually chuck the Move at your TV screen.

You really don't want to loose your aim because you have to throw a grenade.

You should have watch any decent wii shooter then, you would reach the same conclusion has now....anyway now killzone has a controller option that matches its graphics....
