Jak and Daxter series > Ratchet or Sly Cooper

I liked Jak 2. I didn't mind the GTA-ification in this case. Guns work for Ratchet & Clank and they work here. I never found the difficulty a problem (I can't even remember the game being particularly difficult). The first game was good, but was a very standard platformer, JAK 2 was way more unique. I don't hold the series in very high regard, but I like the games for what they are.

Daxter is less hilarious :(

I remember what he said in J&D1 and I always LMAO'ed XD

I thought he got more funny in Jak 2 and 3. The only line I remember is "some peeps are gonna get deep sixed." I still LOL.

Good man. Good head on those shoulders.

On-topic: I slaved through Jak 2 more out of respect for the original than for any other reason.

Total opposite for me.

His antics in part 1 were just plain lame and annoying, but his dialogue in 2 & 3 was actually pretty funny sometimes. One of the few changes I'd gladly endorse from the sequels.

Was this really that good? I think I only played a little more than the first level, but I remember it being too easy and talky.

Rayman 3 for the GBA was a 2D platformer. I don't recall a whole lot of talking. In fact, I think the villains were from The Great Escape.

EDIT: Huh. They apparently made four Raymans for the GBA: Rayman Advance (the first game), Rayman 3 (a 2D sidescrolling platformer based off the third game), Rayman: Hoodlum's Revenge (an isometric platformer (like Mario & Luigi) sequel to Hoodlum Havoc), and Raving Rabbids (a 2D sidescrolling platformer based off the minigame compilation).

I never knew of Hoodlum's Revenge. Whenever I saw it, I always assumed it was Hoodlum Havoc.

Because it had filler garbage. The rest of the game was excellent, and Jak 3 completely nailed it.

I think Jak and Daxter (the first) was the worst.

I liked Jak 2. The platforming remained fun, the hoverboard was used well, and the story went in a direction I wasn't expecting (if there's anything that kills a game/series for me, it's predictability)

It was hard, but outside of one checkpoint, never tedious or unfairly difficult.

I remember liking the story at the time, for what it was. It wasn't fantastic, but I found it entertaining enough.

The story is great. Daxter is a hoot, Crew is disgustingly awesome, Samos is cranky in an enjoyable way... There's more, but I'll have to go back and replay. Don't remember it that much, but I do remember it being awesome.

OP: Continue with the game. You won't be disappointed.

it sucked, tried too much to be like GTA. i liked the first game which was a normal platformer. the amount of backtracking in 2 is ridiculous and the alerts go off way too easily. add me to the hate list.

I'll see your "it sucked, tried too much to be like GTA" and raise you a "the hover-boarding's cool, the plot's great, the guns are satisfying, the production values are immense, and the environments are funky." ;)

I have to say that although the story in the games isn't that memorable, I did enjoy the
precursor unveiling
in Jak III's finale. The trilogy had a pretty satisfying ending.

atm i'm replaying Jak III and it holds up really well. There's quite a bit of trial and error in some missions (god i hate that hover car mission), but it never gets too frustrating.

I'm really looking forward to Uncharted 2, but I wish Naughty Dog would've tried their hand at a new Jak first. Not a lot of hope for that though, since it doesn't seem like ND goes back to their franchises of the previous gen

In my opinion the first Jak and Daxter was a fairly typical Mario 64 clone wrapped up in a great world and hands down the best animation I've ever seen in a game (and this actually applies to all three of the mainline Jak games). It was pretty lighthearted, colourful and optimistic. Sure there were some gameplay issues but it was an enjoyable experience.

The gameplay was no doubt improved for the sequel - I liked the ginormous sprawling world, improved difficulty and more impressive bossfights. What I really REALLY fucking hated was how they completely and utterly shat on everything the first game built up, changing it into a gritty, gun-toting apocalyptic future sci-fi setting, making Jak into a vengeful vigilante with an even more evil "dark mode" and smouldering with generic rage, yadda yadda yadda. All they needed to do was to make him bald and they would have accomplished their task of destroying the first game's atmosphere in a thinly veiled attempt to appeal to the masses with a me-too theme. They might as well have made a completely different game. It's like Prince of Persia all over again.

I was fully expecting the third game to change it around again and make Jak play party games around a giant game board or something even more extreme. Fortunately they didn't, and at that point my fury had subsided and I could enjoy the game for what it was again.

I love Jak 2, and for the most part I don't find it that difficult. There are a few missions though that are just ridiculous, and most of those require the vehicles. Glad you're enjoying it, Himu.

And really, Jak's only angry for like the first hour of the game. After that, he's a slightly annoyed goober. Sure the game is darker than the first, but not so much that it's oppressive. Just enough to say, "hey, the world needs saving."

I'd really like to meet the asshole who decided to make races where:

1. You have to start over if you blow up, you can't reset your position.
2. Can't drift even though the track consists of a lot of curves.
3. Made the races 5 laps long. Seriously. 3 is the ideal number.

It always bugs me when games try and get ambitious by breaking the golden "3" rule. It's like in Banjo-Kazooie when a box requires 5 hits, or Zelda LTTP where a boss requires 6 hits. It's 3 hits and should always be 3 hits.

Jak shouldn't talk!

Bingo. He doesn't have anything interesting to say. Who gives a fuck about him when Daxter steals the show.

And I loved all the platforming stuff in this game. And one of the boss battles was one of the most memorable in that gen. All the rest..... big MEH.

The rocket level was awesome (or was it broken hoverbike?)

Jak 2 criticism on GAF overblown? not in million years! *rolleyes*

Also, people were affraid by the vehicules because they actually took skill to control. I agree it made the game maybe a tad harder than it should have been for most people but hey, the tiring "get skills" comment is so fitting here. I'm waving through the trafic every easily in the game. You really need to devellop the habit of changing planes.

.

Jak 2 is fantastic. The only thing that annoyed me was that the overworld could get crowded and the sensitive vehicle controls would get you into trouble with the cops way more often than I cared for. But the visuals were fantastic, the story was fun, Daxter rocked and the gameplay was extremely varied. There were a couple of missions that were hair pulling, but I loved the overall challenge.

Jak 3 is equally great, but the sandy area got a bit tiring. Still awesome though. A bit easier and stremlined compared to 2. I just love both games. Never cared much for the first.

Jak 2 was incredibly hard when it came out, so alot of the heat came from people because they thought it was too hard.

If you stuck with it and finished it, you got an amazing sense of accomplishment for finishing it. It was pretty tough at times, but i loved it!!!!

Ugh I put this in yesterday to see if I could give it another go but I can't find anything about it I like. Moving around Haven is a complete chore and I still hate the gun stuff.

Jak can get annoying too. I am going to keep pushing forward in the hopes the platforming gets better.

Finished my replay of Jak 3. I completely forgot how completely fuckawesome the final act of that game is. They really pulled out all the stops there. I'm probably even more impressed with that game compared to the first time I played it.

So, 3 has aged well? I remember it being rather unpolished.

I think it has. I was impressed by the gameplay variety and grandeur of the finale. Seeing that this game is 5 years old already, it's pretty impressive overall.

A few pages late to the party but basically, it's not that jak 2 was hard, it was badly designed. There are more then a few missions that make you drive from one end of the neat looking but pointless hub city to the other on a timer and should you fail you get to drive all the way back again and restart the mission , they basically had it set up like a racing game where 1 mistake means you don't get 1st place. It was an awesome looking game though and when you weren't in the city or shooting guns ... or riding a vehicle it was fun .. just unfortunate that only about 5% of the game works that way. I Got frustrated beyond belief with it and gave up probably a 3rd the way through it and got rid of it but your mileage may vary.

See, I actually found Jak and Daxter an enjoyable diversion, it was a simple but fun mario 64 knockoff that looked great. The second one has a small amount of the first leftover but instead they added an open world GTA style setup , tried to make it all edgy and T rated , gave jak a voice and well.. it was just overambitious and riddled with design faults. I've heard the 3rd one fairs a bit better but it's still an open world title unfortunatly. Naughty dog was just too desperate to make a mature game and were stuck with a generic platformer so they gutted it and raped the corpse instead of just making a different game.

Seriously. I'm this close. And I haven't played a goddam thing in a looong-ass time. Some gamer I am :(

But hearing these impressions, it's definitely sparked something in me...

By the series, I mean just the three main games.

I started The Precursor Legacy last summer, but never finished it. Hm....

Yeah, right there with you. Those are the only ones I care about, really.

I remember them being pretty special, besides some of my frustrations with 2. Those same feelings at the time are flooding back.

I'm glad you liked the Tomb of Mar. It's one of the best parts of the game. So great. A couple pretty cool parts to come. I really think you'll like 3 a lot, but it isn't as tough. If you end up liking the dune buggies than I can't see why you wouldn't like it as much or more than II since you'll get new weapons and powers. Jak 3 is still my favorite game. But I loved II as well. Glad, you're liking II.

How much easier we talking here? Jak 1 easy?
No, not at that level, generally as I remember the vehicle segments are generally not super difficult and the game overall is more forgiving. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but not as much as 2 because I really like challenging action/platformers like Jak 2.

I never liked the vehicle sections in this game either, but then again, I've never liked racing. That doesn't mean I didn't have fun driving certain vehicles, though.
