[JGAF] Today is the new game impressions thread

I agree with Kabuki on this. I got my Motorstorm/EDF3/Chocobo this morning at work before I looked at todays update to this thread and when I pulled out Motorstorm and saw that it was ONLY 1P WITH NO SPLIT-SCREEN I :lol in a "OH GOD I JUST BOUGHT A BETA" way :\

While no online sucks and all, I'd be perfectly content, for now, to just have a good 1p racer that I can play split-screen with friends. No split-screen in a game just means I can't even put it in while friends are over since no one wants to watch others play a racing game.

If the US version comes out with 2p split-screen, online play, and gameplay/graphical tweaks then yeah, I'm not going to be happy that they basically said "hey, our game is in beta form. Let's ship it in Japan and laugh at them as they buy it and report all the game problems, which we'll fix for the US version!"

Guess it's just EDF3 co-op all night tonight!

So after EDF3-fest I popped in Motorstorm expecting the worst as the demo never sold me on the gameplay (I crashed too much and I hated the unskippable crash animations [you lose less time/place driving off a cliff than crashing WTF!?]) and DCharlie's impressions were obviously not too glowing.

And at first I did the first race and I was crashing a lot like the demo and I'm like "crap, how the hell I'm I going to get through this entire game if I can't even get first in the 1st race!?!". And then I tried again and lost again. Then on my third time I was like "hmmm...maybe I shouldn't always be holding the gas trigger 100% with a heavy truck that can't turn fast enough....", so I tried playing it like Gran Turismo or Forza and played it like a sim keeping my speed only at what I think I could maintain while still able to brake enough to take turns and speed out of them like a sim...and wtf suddenly I got first place and never crashed once! Then I did the next two events the same way and again not a single crash and first place by like a 5 second lead over the 2nd place guy, and suddenly I'm having lots of fun that I didn't expect.

So yeah, I have to vehemently differ in opinion to DCharlie in that I think the handling and thus (combined with the good track design) the core racing gameplay is great! It feels to me like a natural sim-control/physic scheme that rewards real life driving skills/strategies along with mixing in a super powered boost. The game lets me play a somewhat realistic recreation of what driving through interesting off-road tracks full of jumps, bumps, and mud would be like; which is an nice change of pace from the standard roads of most racers. To me, this equals fun and it's just a joy to play in 1st person mode.

That being said with no online play, no split-screen, and only 8 tracks I don't know how long Motorstorm will actually keep my interest and if it will in the end be a great game or not. I come from the RSC2 camp where I love 20+ tracks taking place in unique and interesting environments, so in a day or two after seeing all 8 Motorstorm tracks I may go "grrrr..." and shelve it and wait for the US version with online play and possibly(?) more tracks.

Definitely the surprise of the night, went in expecting nothing beyond a tech demo; left with a big thumbs up for the actual gameplay beyond just the graphics.

I just bought Motorstorm today, still haven&t tried it, but thanks to you I know how to approach it! :)

Yeah, uh...I'd be going full speed off a jump and then SLAMMING on the brakes when I land in hope to make the turn that's 5 feet ahead of me and I'd end up in the wall everytime. ^^; So yeah, after learning that maybe I shouldn't be taking that jump at FULL SPEED I landed with enough time to brake, turn, and hit the gas+boost to pull out of the turn correctly. Motorstorm just looks really arcadey in its premise so you subconciously think to play it like an arcade racer but yeah...that just makes you crash...A LOT >_<

For gamer friends, I usually just have them bring their own system and a copy of whatever game and roll out my other HDTV. That's obviously not going to work for everyone, though.

While I'd love to play System Link instead, I don't have multiple TVs, and nobody else I know has a 360 or PS3... So split screen it is. Guest support for online games is great too. Plus, there are games that only support split screen like Resistance and EDF3. It's disappointing to me when games like Crackdown sound like they'll have a great co-op mode, but since there's no split screen I'll have no way to play it with local friends... This seems to be a trend though, and an increasing amount of games are shipping with 2 player splitscreen only when they do have it.

Are there different variations of these 8 tracks, or is it just 8 tracks period? Are the vehicles customizable? My interest in this is the online aspect of it. Sucks that you can't test that part out though. Is this game going to follow Resistance in that online play is region specific?

Well considering there is no online play at all for the Japanese version, this shouldn't matter much... Unless you're referring to a European release?

Motorstorm comes out in March, right? That time, the PS3 should be out in Europe, so that is two regions. In that case, I think my question is still valid. I normally game late at night, like now, and take for instance, most of the time when I played halo 2, I was playing a lot of european players. If online is region specific, I might have some trouble finding people to play. I run into that on Resistance on the occasions I try to take it online.

I'm really, REALLY liking Motorstorm even more. It's a very satisfying racer, but I wonder if the Japanese version is "incomplete." Will the U.S. version get more tracks and modes in addition to online?

Loadtimes (look above)? I must know (especially in regards to retries)! :)

Around 17-28 seconds. The shorter loads seem to be for races with only one vehicle type. Also when you want to retry, there's no load times. :)

Lyte are the tracks lengthy? im really curious because i LOVED the demo but this 8 tracks and No Split screen has me really worried.

Yeah, they seem to be good lengths, and have multiple ways to go through them. In general, the high road seems to be the fastest (and also the hardest to stay on).

Don't know about the first question yet. No vehicle customization, just different variants (paint jobs and riders) for them all.

If the US version DOESN'T have more tracks and a more fleshed out single player mode then I think the game was a bit of a rushed and wasted opportunity to have a real winner on their hands. I dunno, maybe all this stuff will be in Motorstorm 2 a year down the line and that will be the 'complete' game, we'll see...

But I really wish I could be racing against you right now! No online play is :(

reassuring impressions.

phew. Thanks Bebpo - and mine has just shipped from Yesasia.

Sounds even more like Stunt Car racer with mud to me now. Your comment about flying over a jump at max speed is just like the stepping stones track

Did anyone get Phantasy Star Universe for 360? Johnnyram? Does it have an English option by some chance?

I get the same vibe from Motorstorm that I did from the orginal SSX when it came out. It's just a blast to play, limitations, lack of modes, and all. :)

god I hope not - I don't get on with SSX at all. But I understand what you mean about it just looking like it'll be fun to play despite its relative limitations.

No, the game plays nothing like SSX, but what I loved about SSX was the freedom you had during races. This game reminds me of that...you're racing on big, open tracks with different ways to go, and you clash with the other racers while you're going.

well, i'm enjoying it a lot more now i've got into the 'groove' of the game but i have to say that i'm finding the physics and some of the collissions painful. And whilst i say i'm enjoying it , i don't think word i'd use to describe the game would be 'fun' (IMO obviously) - it's more 'challenging' than fun. I'm also not sure that there is much of a strategy element either - rubber banding up the wazoo and cpu drivers who will , consistantly, rear end you on the last corner is starting to get really really old, some of the multiroute stuff is confusing (especially in the track with the wooden jump) ,etc etc :/

Anyways, decent game, but not a great one IMO.

The SSX vibe is definitely there. For example the music becomes "blurry" when you lose speed, and then blasts when you reach high speeds.

Even though I'm playing on a shitty TV and the image is a bit blurry, I'n still having a good time with this game, finally something for my PS3.

From the Edge article I mentioned earlier it sounds like 8 tracks is it, and they're just adding online. There is the option of more from the store I guess but I think they're going to do custom decals or something with it.

Motorstorm: Tricky.

(QUICK) Impressions of some of these as the JGAFfers/Duckroll get them i'd guess

What's the co-op like (vertical split screen or horizontal split screen)??

Hope it's horizontal split screened like GoW, did not like the R6 vertical split IMO :(
